Fafsa?

Do you have to fill out FAFSA forms just go get tuition/stipends? None of the applications mention this and I didn't think it was required, but at my last interview someone said it had to be done by everyone. I hope the answer is either no, or that the deadline hasn't passed!

I'm pretty sure everyone has to do it. It's wicked easy though so it shouldn't be a hassle for you.

Really? I wonder why no applications mentioned a word of it! The website says the california deadline was march 2nd.....? I'm not going to grad school in california, but I live there now, is it too late?

It depends upon the program. Some require that you complete it. Others will not. Furthermore, if you wish to determine your eligibility for loans, then you must also complete the FAFSA. Some states have early (March/April) FAFSA deadlines; however, even if the date has passed, then you can still submit the FAFSA. Early deadlines tend to be for individuals interested in grants (which you are ineligible for as a grad student) and other undergrad scholarships, so nothing really to be concerned about for grad school.

I believe that I did not complete the FAFSA until June for the current academic year, and at other times prior to that, I did not complete it until August, right before the semester started, so I suspect that you are fine.

I don't want to take out loans, I just want to make sure I get my funding. I don't think I need to fill it out but I guess I will just in case.

if any of the scholarship, fellowship, whatever decisions are made based even in part on need, you'll need to fill out a fafsa -- so they can see where you are at financially. your programs dept. may fund totally on merit, so that may not be an issue, but you may become eligible for other funding or scholarships too that are need based (if in fact you are in need).
