Hi all,
I just found out that I actually failed (LITERALLY!!!) a class this quarter even though I was only taking 2 classes. [In case you are wondering why- I was studying for my MCATs that got done a week before finals and I pretty much never went to the lectures and spent half a day studying for each of the tests.] I've already submitted my primaries and my transcript was to be sent in this week (so the fail grade won't be on there). But I've heard that if you list a class on the primaries and fail it, even if they give you an acceptance - they will take it back. So I was wondering if you guys think that I should just not send in the secondaries and kiss a thousand dollars goodbye so that I don't have to pay more and be rejected. I have a low gpa (3.3) to begin with, but I've applied to all of the lower-tiered schools too. If I don't get in this year, I don't think I would get in next year either considering my failing a class in my junior year. So I don't know if I should just go with it and apply all the way and see what happens or withdraw from the rest of the process. Either way, I'd need to retake the class. Does that matter to them? If I retake and get an A over the next year (or the summer), would they still kick me out of the pool?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Take the class again tis summer or fall, that way you will have a passing grade in the course that you listed on AMCAS.

But the failing grade will still be on my transcript. Would they not care?

(s)he's just trying to help. Try not to sound rude.
I wasn't trying to be rude to her/him. Sorry if it sounded that way. As you can imagine, I'm really pissed at myself right now. Just trying to figure out what the heck to do.
I appreciate all your comments. Thank you. And I will call- and try to do it anonymously.

Would an F keep you out of med school altogether? I think not, albeit an F is a big challenge to overcome.

Thank you all for your advice and comments.

Odds are, the F will not keep you out of med school as long as you can explain it. The part that I bolded does NOT count as an explanation. Every applicant has to take the MCAT, and most take it during the semester amidst classes and work etc. The schools will see that you were only taking 2 classes and still managed to fail one of them. This will look like you didn't really care about your classes, and just ignored them. If you can come up with a solid excuse for the F, you might be able to get an acceptance. HOWEVER, your 3.3 GPA with an F is what will stop you from getting in. You need to retake the class and then apply DO with the replaced grade.

Retake, and apply DO. With a 3.3, you should be applying DO anyway.

This is what I was thinking. To be honest, your chances were not that great to begin with with that GPA, and the F is probably the icing on the cake. Retake it this summer and apply to DO schools, is good advice IMO.

If you can retake this summer I would suggest doing that and applying to DO schools if you haven't already. DOs will replace a repeated class with the second grade while MD school will only average them.

Even if you can't retake this summer, apply DO. I have friends 3 years post college who are still trying to get into med school and they are all like "i wish I would have applied DO the first time". Don't make that mistake!
