Hi, I just failed a class for the first time due to a technical difficulty when taking my online final resulting in a zero and an automatic failure of the class. The reason for failing feels unbelievable to me and I’m worried that schools will feel like I’m lying about the reason to make myself look not as bad. Do I explain it exactly as it happened? Is there a section on apps to explain bad grades?
Context: I just took my final for an online class and the final was done through a lockdown browser with webcam proctoring. Fifteen minutes into the exam, I get a notification that I lost internet connection and that none of my exam answers will be saved upon submission. I start freaking out and wait for the internet to come on but it doesn’t, so I leave my room with my laptop in hand and enter another room to fix my router (which you are not allowed to leave your desk during a test at all) and the internet does come back because I hear my dad in his bedroom start playing YouTube. However, my exam still says internet connection lost and I realized that I have to manually connect my computer back to the internet through settings, which I can’t because of lockdown browser. I waited the whole two hours for my laptop to magically reconnect but it didn’t, resulting in a zero on the final and an automatic failure of the class.
The reason is so stupid. My college doesn’t allow for make up exams due to technical difficulties according to their policy. I reached out and asked my professor anyway but I doubt that it’ll happen. How do I even explain the F on my application and in interviews? It sounds like I’m trying to worm my way out of accountability if I say it’s because of a technical difficulty, doesn’t it? My GPA won’t be too bad after the F, will probably be around 3.8.
