Failed my bio lab - I never even went

So heres what happened..

I signed up for bio 101 lab and was going to drop after a week or two because my schedule was pretty full. When the withdrawal date rolled around I was really busy and didnt track down my teacher in time to sign the proper forms etc..

So after that I would have had to work my ass of and maybe not even get a C (I had not been there in like 5 weeks) so I just stopped going.

I will most likely end up with a 3.75 this semester, not including the one credit lab (about 3.67 with the F). Obviously I need to retake it.

My question however is how this will look to med schools. I know that if I GRO the class (which I will) it will still show the F in my med school GPA, but will how bad will that be? -- and lets assume I get an A on the retake

No, the real question is why the OP was foolish enough not to get his ducks in order to drop the class by the drop date, which at most schools is at the end of October or even later. You messed this one up, OP, and yes, it probably will come back to bite you later. Be prepared to explain it, somehow!

If you're asked about it in interview, I wouldn't make any excuses about. Just say that you made a mistake with dropping it and don't elaborate.

You could try to petition the school/instructor to allow you to retroactively withdraw with a regular "W". Explain that you lost track of the deadline, etc. Since you have proven with your GPA that you are a good student, they may give you a break.

Just don't tell them you're pre-med, because they will probably be less likely to help you.

"I got busy" or "stuff came up" is never an acceptable excuse when you have several weeks to drop a course if that is what you have to do. What are you spending all of your time on that you can't take 30 minutes to do the legwork to drop a course?

If you have to explain yourself further down the road, don't make excuses. You are probably better off just saying, "I have no excuse. I should have dropped the lab, but missed the deadline."

When you start making excuses for a situation like this, it looks like several potential issues: that you are possibly immature and not a responsible adult, and/or you are lazy, and/or disorganized. None of these are good issues to have for a potential medical student.

Really no good way to spin this. It says you're irresponsible, can't prioritize, and have poor decision-making skills. Those are all qualities I wouldn't want in the person in charge of my healthcare, would you?

As has been said, you're going to have to skirt this as much as possible essays and interviews. It's going to look bad. You need to show this is not who you are through future coursework and ECs. Good luck, dude, you're gonna need it. Just be glad you don't go where I go -- you would have automatically failed the whole lecture and lab for baby bio. At least they let you got away with just failing the lab....

Wow this is one of those things I would always have nightmares about after the semester had finished...except in the dream I would just forget that I had enrolled for the class 🙁

Will it come back to bite you in the a**? Quite possibly. It shows a complete lack of responsibility. I hope you are a freshman and can somehow use the excuse that you were naive and disorganized and couldn't possibly comprehend the consequences of your actions. Do not EVER let this happen again. Rarely will an interviewer question a single or couple W's. ALWAYS will they question an F.

Yep. My undergrad had a policy where could you withdraw after the deadline if you had never gone to class.

This is the craziest story I have ever heard. Personally, I hope this becomes detrminetal to your app, even if you take it again and get an A. You dont deserve any second chances. I respect people who get F's or drop the class because of real reasons, like death, not this kind of garbage. Anyone who disagrees with me is crazy.
