We needed to do OSCE at the end of 3rd year and I failed with flying colors.
It's kinda depressing because I've been getting great evals from attendings and residents throughout all rotations........

One standardized patient wrote that she felt uncomfortable with me because I did not shake her hand at the end of the session despite the fact I said, "I will return with the attending to discuss about the diagnosis and plan with you. I will see you in a couple minutes or so"
For patient note I received 2SD below average because I forgot to include VS (which was given) and negative allergies despite they commented that I had very good DDX and plan.............

omg, I wanna cry...........

OSCE is a tick-box exercise, it is all about passing the exam. You have to say what they want you to say or you will not get a tick and subsequently loose marks. If I were you I would get my hands on a marking scheme if at all possible and tailor your revision to what the examiners want to hear. It is like a driving test, you do all the required song-and-dance for the exam even though in real life practice it would be plausible to do/say something else.

ya, sigh......

this is bullcrap. Right before I am applying to residency programs, I failed my OSCE..........

spinnerette, don't gave up. A depression is the last thing that you need now.
You can repair the situation. Just retake the exam 🙂

ya, just need to schedule a make-up exam

It's depressing because it's just such an odd ball in my file. Every clerkship director wrote me great feedbacks on the things covered in OSCE and the comments in OSCE were simply the opposite (ie. from IM "praised by patients" vs OSCE "made me feel uncomfortable")

It's more of an anger issue now if I think about it. Why would anyone feel uncomfortable if I only shook her hand when I entered but not when I exited.............

I don't think I've ever shaken a patient's hand when I've left a room.
Stuff like that is pure bs.

Succeeding in an OSCE also partly involves flattering the Standardized Patient's ego IMO. I know people who have forgotten entire parts of their physical exam but managed to charm their SP into giving them a good score/pass.
