Fall 2010 Acceptances!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think the e-mail could have been because you applied to PhD.
The other UNC acceptances/rejections seem to have all been for the MPH.

Congrats! 🙂

Admitted to UNC for PhD program in Epi!!

Notified by e-mail...no snail mail for me. Did anyone else on the forum apply to epi program? I'm curious as to whether I just never got the letter in the mail...

Admitted: UT, Hopkins, Yale, Michigan, UNC (phd)
Still waiting: Berkeley, Washington, Harvard, Columbia

Congrats on so many acceptances! I also applied to epi at UNC and got an email but nothing in the mail. But, the email says something about an "acceptance pack from the Graduate School" so I assume we should be getting somthing in the mail shortly?

Great news! Did you apply for PhD programs at the schools you are currently still waiting for? I graduate with my MPH in May and I'm waiting for acceptances from DrPH/PhD programs. There doesn't seem to be a thread for doctorates besides the Physician Scientist board (point me in the right direction, if I'm wrong!), so I've been browsing the MPH forum. Good Luck!

Not to butt in but UNC doesn't have an MPH only for Epi... it's automatically an MPH/PhD program if I am correct. So I think utph is doing MPH for the rest of the schools they applied to.

However if you use the search function you may find more individuals who've applied to PhD programs such as Stories did last year. There's also www.thegradcafe.com there are some phD folk hanging out there and there's always the results page.

Edit:
Sorry, they do have a standalone so I'm not sure about utph, they can answer for themselves. However, hopefully you can find some more PhD/DrPH applicants like yourself at grad cafe 😀 I hope to be where you are in 2 or 3 years!!! From your name I assume you're doing Community Health programs? lol

Thanks guys!

publichealthr, my email also talked about a package which is what made me worried..but I'm glad I'm not the only one that was notified by email first. Are you going to their visitors day?

community and curious..yes, UNC has an mph in epi but it is for professionals with advanced degrees (like MDs); however, you can apply to the Epi PhD program directly with a bachelors (which is the highest degree I have right now).

Found out today through snail mail that I got accepted to the Health Behavior and Health Education Department.

I applied by 12/15

Unique, not sure if you posted this already but i'm wondering about your stats. I've also applied to HBHE at UNC. I didn't submit until Jan 11th so I feel i have some time before I'll hear but I'm at the point that I'm anxious and hoping to get some more comparison about where I stand 🙂 Also applied to Tulane, Emory and UMich but no responses yet.

Thanks for clarifying!! I knew it was something weird like that 🙂

I submitted my application really late. Sopha has not even sent them yet. I have talked to one adviser from mph in ucla like 1 week ago..They have only made a few decisions and they need to review all the applicants at one time...it is not on a rolling basis...they will review applicant packages back and forth..so they wont start to make up their mind till march or april....yea....btw i am applying biosta..is there anyone hearing decisions back?

CaitieDid: Hey, I got my application in on December 13th for HBHE for UNC and I haven't heard yay or nay yet. You probably still have a bit of time... especially since u didn't even get it in by Jan 1st (which is like the "priority deadline")

prodigykaty: I didn't know you could apply this late to UCLA...my app was due Dec. 1st. Although I was Community Health Sciences. I'm pretty sure biostat people have started to hear back already though.

Just got accepted to Penn State University👍

Just got in to Yale Social & Behavioral Sciences by snail mail

Hey Everyone,

I have really enjoyed reading everyone's post. I just wanted to contribute my own experiences.

Applied to- Harvard/Yale/Emory/BU/Tulane/UT/Columbia/NYU

Acceptances so far- Emory (Global Health) and UT (even though I haven't gotten an e-mail from them and just saw the 'admitted' status from SOPHAS)

Still waiting on the other schools.

Stats- Undergrad GPA- 3.7 Majors (chemistry & mathematics) minors (creative writing and Biology)
Was part of the Model UN/NATO programs in college for 4 years
Did undergraduate research for 2 summers- one was at Mayo Clinic
Currently working in India at a local NGO

Good luck everyone!

Hey Dime,

I don't know if that question was for me but I submitted on SOPHAS around the 20th of December and they mailed everything on January 20th/2010.

got accepted to Yale today..

acceptances till now
UT houston, emory, yale, U of MInnesota

waiting on
Hopkins, harvard, bekeley , michigan but most importantly funding..

If i don't get any funding I won't be able attend any university..don't have money..I am from a developing country and after my medical degree I could just make 3500$ in two years!!
Out of the above only UT houston seems close to my budget + loans
lets see what happens in this crucial 1-2 months phase..

How long did it take for the people at Yale to get back to you?
Thanks

It seems to me like you need to give Yale a month +/- about a week from my experience and others i've seen here.

I designated on SOPHAS right before Christmas and then heard back like the first week of February. I imagine the holidays may have gummed up the process a bit.

This was for Health Policy btw.

I just got into Emory
MS in Biostatistics!

cclkrx, may I ask your stats - GPA/GRE/applied date?

I've been following these forums for awhile. I'm getting real nervous; seems like alot of people here have really high gpa/gre scores and lots of public health experience.

My numbers -

Undergrad - Industrial Engineering (lots of stats courses) - 3.2
GRE - 570V/ 730Q / 4.0W
About 3 years experience in Oil and Gas industry working in quality, co-wrote a published paper my senior year regarding healthcare industry and six sigma.

Schools applied to (all for a MS in Biostats):
Minnesota - (my first choice)
UT Houston - (second, I live in Houston)
Emory
Washington

Washington is a long shot, if I get into Minnesota and UT I'll be real happy. If I get a TA/RA as well then I'll be at Happy Hour celebrating!! 😀

I just got an acceptance at PENN!
I submitted my application for the first deadline.

Has anyone else gotten into Penn? What do you guys think of the program?

__
Acepted: Penn, Yale (enviro), Drexel, Boston, Tulane, Emory, USF, UIC, Pitt

Waiting: GW

Does anyone have that link that shows all the concentrations and acceptance rates and all these other statistics for each school?

Just can't find it on the forums...

Hi everyone. First post -- thought I'd chime in.

Just got in to Yale Social & Behavioral Sciences by snail mail

Congrats! I was also accepted at Yale.

How long did it take for the people at Yale to get back to you?
Thanks

Received: 12/17
Accepted: 1/25

Also accepted at BU. I only applied to 3 schools -- just waiting on Columbia now and hoping for a good financial package.

Its on the ASPH website. Keep in mind the data is from 2008. I know for a fact BU's acceptance rate for 2009 was quite a bit different. 2009 data will be released late Feb early March

Congrats! When did they get your app?

I got an email from yale stating that my application was complete on 1/12 and an letter mailed to my house yesterday 2/9. So it took exactly 4 weeks for me.

Hey, anyone who applied to BU...did they send you anything saying they got your app or anything?

SOPHAS mailed out my stuff on 2/2 and I haven't heard anything yet.

Quickly checked Sophas before it's scheduled shutdown.

Accepted in to UGA and denied from SUNY-Albany. This app process is really turning out to be quite amusing. I think ppl are going to be shocked/amused when they see my final decision post. It proves that when you have certain stats, you have to apply pretty broadly 🙂

Yes, I got an email that said my application was my app was complete and another email some weeks after that, stating my app was under review and that it could take up to 8 weeks to find out my decision. (Only took 2).

quick question: the 1/12 email was application received or application complete? i've received two emails about three weeks apart...

No, they don't. Keep calling them and they'll tell you the status. They told me of my acceptance over the phone. However, it took 6 weeks to get a decision for me.

Okay my application received email was on 12/23/09 and on 1/12/10 I received an email that my was application complete. Notified by snail mail yesterday 2/9/10 of my acceptance.

yea..I applied like really late..I didnt decide to go for biosta till late dec.. I am just worried about my GRE score..I got a really bad verbal score. Can anyone tell me how important GRE is? For some schools. like UW, they told me that they didnt care about my verbal at all...but I am still worried.

For me BU sent me an email saying that my application was completed on 1/20/2010 and this was about a month from when I submitted my SOPHAS on 12/23/2009. Maybe they are still processing your application Deem23

Probably. I just was wondering what I should expect from them. I got the app in just before the priority deadline so I was wondering what to expect as far as a timeline was concerned.

Accepted to the University of Michigan for HBHE! So excited! 🙂

Accepted into Tulane for Health Education and Communication.

I wish my parents would have let me go to NOLA this weekend when my friends asked. XD

Edit: Also I just want to add for everyone and the lurkers. Never give up when applying to schools. Seriously. When I talked to the lady on the phone, she said they were concerned about my GPA but thought the rest of my app was really awesome and they really believed I could do well. So hopefully the grad school OKs it as well 🙂

Good Luck everyone!!

applied to: UC Berkley DrPH

application completed: 11/30

sophas mailed: 12/29

all my eggs in one basket, still waiting on a decision.... received an email stating they would be sending out decisions between Feb. 15 and April 15th. apparently UC Berkeley had a record number of apps this year - 1300 total.

Wasn't expecting this...

I also just got into Michigan HBHE. I applied to two departments and I had already gotten notification for an interview for Health Management and Policy so I thought HBHE wouldn't consider me anymore (thats seems to be the way that Pitt and Yale did it with applying to multiple departments). I guess they operate independently from one another at Michigan. I'm still going to go for the Health Management and Policy interview in March but its good to know that if I fall in love with the school when I visit I already have an acceptance regardless of how my interview goes!

So...

Accepted:
UT Houston (Health Services Organization)
Yale (Health Policy)
Pittsburgh (Behavioral and Community Health Science)
UCLA (Community Health Sciences)
Michigan (Health Behavior and Health Education)

Interview:
Michigan (Health Management and Policy)

Rejections:
None

Waiting:
Columbia, U Washington, UNC and BU

Accepted: University of North Carolina MHA program (Yesterday)
University of Alabama HCOP program (1/26)

Interviews: University of Michigan MHSA (Today!)
University of Minnesota MHA(TBA)
Johns Hopkins MHA (Two weeks ago)

Waiting: Harvard SPH Human Development and Society
NYU Wagner School, Health Management & Policy
Columbia, Sociomedical Sciences

SOPHAS submitted my applications 11/31.

Via e-mail this morning. I submitted my app about a week before it was due in January.

Ditto on the morning email. I submitted to SOPHAS on 12/3 and was processed on 12/24. Michigan confirmed receipt of my application on 1/11, so it's been exactly one month.

GPA: 3.97 from a reputable public university
GRE: V 640/ A 580 😳 / AWA 6.0
I'm an English major with a Gender Studies Minor; math isn't one of my strong points, obviously.
Other: Lots of sexual and reproductive health and rights work; I've biked across the country for reproductive justice, presented interactive workshops about sex toys and contraception, worked one-on-one with survivors of domestic violence, spoken to hundreds of college students about the realities of sexual assault through an outreach position at a Chicagoland non-profit, etc.

reject: minn (env health), bu

waiting: osu, uic

god help me.

Hey Deem,

I think our apps are on a similar timeline. Today I finally received an email from BU stating they are reviewing my application. It doesn't give any hint as to how long that could take, though!

Found a nice big envelope in my mailbox from UIC when I got home! Admitted to the Community Health Sciences department. Today has been a good day!

Admitted: UIC (CHS), Michigan (HBHE)
Waiting: Boston, Columbia

snackerina-- I'm no good with the numbers, but I can write, thankfully! 🙂

Congrats on UIC feminista!

Do you mind if I ask when you submitted your app? I've been waiting rather anxiously to hear back from the UIC's CHS department too...

We must be on exactly the same timeline because I got that e-mail today too! Just made the priority deadline with my SOPHAS designation. I thought I was done applying and then I looked into BUs program and thought it would be food to apply. It was kind of on a whim. haha!

Just got an e-mail from University of Washington! Got into the Epi MPH program!!

Congrats MPH0205- I got an acceptance email from the University of Washington (Epi MPH) today too!
