Is going to Yale!!!!! There is hope for people who got a low verbal score! You can do it 🙂

UMDNJ for Epidemiology at the Piscataway/New Brunswick campus. Still waiting to hear from several outside scholarships, because UMDNJ's funding is virtually non-existent. Hey, congratulations everyone! Let's have a great first year!

Ugrad cumulative GPA: 3.33 at time of application
Verbal 720
Quantitative 800

I only decided to start applying/take the GRE/ask for LOR's in late December, and was only interested in public schools in Southern California (although it looks like Loma Linda also has an excellent program). Needless to say, my options were few.

Applied: SDSU, UCI
Accepted: SDSU, UCI

Decided: UCI

I knew it was a risk going with a newer program that isn't (yet) accredited, but I liked the idea of having extremely small class sizes and going with the UC system in hopes of potentially finding ways to work more closely with doctors affiliated with the school. I think SDSU would have been great, too! Some folks have told me that I shouldn't do an MPH as a premed, but I'm actually really looking forward to studying health on a macro level. Haven't really decided whether to go with an Epi concentration or env. health, though. Feel free to pm me if you have any suggestions.

Anyone else going to UCI in the Fall? Given the fact that there are so few of us, chances are we'll get to know each other pretty well!

Finally, all the decisions are in:

Accepted: Johns Hopkins (MHA), Michigan (MHSA), UNC (MHA), Alabama (MPH-Health Organization Services), Columbia (MPH-SMS), Harvard SM (SDHS)

Rejected: Minnesota (MHA), NYU (MPA)

Stats: 680Q, 700V. Various research and public health/health administration internship experiences, strong (I hope) letters of recommendation.

Good luck everyone with making your decisions!
If you don't mind me asking, what were your stats? Did you apply straight after undergrad? I've applied to pretty much the exact same programs for the Fall 2011 term, and I'm quite nervous how everything will pan out in the end...

Hi,
I'm planning on applying to some various MPH programs for the fall 2011. Obviously, with it being late Jan, Im running behind. I am going to take my MCAT in a week and use that score to apply so I technically wont be complete until I get my scores back in late Feb.

It seems like most MPH programs/schools, being less competitive on average when compared to medical schools, have "soft" deadlines or rolling admissions, with a few (JHU, columbia) not accepting apps after their posted deadlines. vie called my top choices (NYU, Mount Sinai, and Yale) and asked about late apps. They all seemed to indicate that they will review them but cannot guarantee that there will be open seats or major scholarship opportunities. (I care about financial aid but If this is going on student loans then I think I can manage).

So my question is: From what you guys know about MPH admissions processes and how fast seats get filled, does my app stand any chance for acceptance for this Fall?

Im including some smaller programs, but accredited programs (Hunter, Southern Conn State, and NYMC) as back ups in case I don't get into Mount Sinai or they are full.

About me:
Obviously haven't seen my MCAT score yet (I honestly have no idea how I will do at this point). My Undergrad GPA was stellar with only 1 B and the rest A's (competitive liberal arts school). My work experience has been pretty good: one summer in Rwanda, conducting healthcare assessment, and then a year helping fundraise for a clinic in that area that our group designede based on our assessment data (now open). 2 weeks in a Guatemalan children's clnic. 2yrs cardiovascular research at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School. 2 summers bench research at Mass. Gen Hospital. RA in college. Summa Cum Laude. ER Tech in college. Hospice volunteer. Tutored in Psych and gross anatomy. Have shadowed multiple types of healthcare profesionals. Type 1 diabetic, tied this into my personal statement as one unique way in which Ive become interested in public health (specifically chronic disease management) and medicine. Also, I think my recs will be strong.

Any advice or answers to my question would be a huge help! Also, if anyone knows some inside details about Mount Sinai's program (acceptance rate, availble housing, and quality of program) I'd love to hear what you know.

Dynobeads -

You may have noticed that this is the Fall 2010 thread, you'll probably have more luck with responses and help to keep things consolidated by using the Fall 2011 thread:

You didn't mention whether or not you've started your application in SOPHAS yet, if you haven't then that would be something to get on right away. It takes them "2-4" weeks to process those (they will process it without your MCAT score and add it later), but to be processed it must be "complete" which means that all of your transcripts have to be in as well as a minimum of 2 LORs...It can take SOPHAS a couple of weeks to recognize the receipt of transcripts even if you have your school expedite the mailing. You may already have done this, but you didn't mention it, so just in case. However, of the three accredited schools that you listed, Yale is the only one on the SOPHAS website, so you only need to do a SOPHAS application because you are applying to Yale. Something to consider.

I'm sure every school may handle late applications differently, but it would be interesting to find out if you would be considered only for positions that open because someone declines their acceptance, and also if you would be considered before or after wait-listed applicants who submitted before the deadline. I don't see much talk about Mount Sinai or NYU on this forum, but Yale is a big name and I doubt there's a plethora of people who turn down their acceptance and open up spots. Someone may know, but asking the schools where you would fall in the proverbial food chain of applicants could help you figure out the feasibility of getting a spot.

Also, on a personal note, most of the people on this forum are here to do Public Health by choice and not because it is "less competitive" than medical school. Whether it's true or not, and whether that's why you are applying or not, you might want to avoid using that kind of description as some might find it slightly offensive or condescending.

Good luck with your application.

Sorry I didnt mean to cross anyone.
I wouldnt make a career choice based on competitiveness of . An MPH would really give me a boost as a physician in the particular career path I'm trying to go down. The actual MPH credentials might not be absolutely necessary but the training is some form or another is.

And my reference to admissions competitiveness was referring to my perceived demand for open seats in the corresponding types of schools (MD vs MPH). Acceptance rates for med schools fall on average around 5-10% and around 30% up to 70% for MPH programs- based on what I've read. I wasnt trying to imply any difference in value of either career. I think theyre both essential to our healthcare system (and in my case I would need training in both).

This may be random but Hopkins is still accepting applications for their MSPH program (Professional and Terminal degree almost identical to the MPH). Hopkins does not use SOPHAS.

This is last year's thread with 1021 posts, and should be used for reference only. Please use the 2011 acceptances thread for any new posts.

Hi There,

You just commented on a verry old thread. I would recommend checking out the "applied/accepted mph 2012" forum.

You applied a bit late and you didn't mention your GRE scores. However, I think you will get an acceptance from Tulane and USF, but not from Yale.

Yale is very competitive and the other two schools are right in the middle in terms of ranking and acceptance rates.

Good luck
