Fall 2010 Acceptances!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats MPH0205- I got an acceptance email from the University of Washington (Epi MPH) today too!

U W is one of my top choices so I am very very excited!

Congrats....when did you apply? I am waiting right now.

for those who heard from UW and Berkeley:

what time of day did your emails come?

😍

Congrats on UIC feminista!

Do you mind if I ask when you submitted your app? I've been waiting rather anxiously to hear back from the UIC's CHS department too...

Hi Caolainn, I submitted to SOPHAS on 12/3, SOPHAS sent the application on 12/24, UIC confirmed receipt on 1/6, and I heard back from them today. Took a little over one month. Hope that helps!

Applied to 9 MPH Epi programs, and oy waiting is harsh! Posting my stats as I wait/deal with the snow.

Undergrad GPA: (a community college/Drexel) 2.47/3.48|| Associates in Liberal arts/ BA Anthropology

GRE: V460 | Q680

UIC: Accepted via snail mail.
University of Minnesota: Rejected via snail mail.
Drexel: Accepted via email followed by a phone call.
Boston: Accepted +8k scholarship via snail mail.

For those Columbia applicants: Has anyone received a decision?

I am currently a Peace Corps health volunteer, and this SOPHAS process has been a nightmare to do abroad (and disconnected). Looks like my application was just processed by SOPHAS this week. Getting worried as Emory (top choice) is quickly filling up.

Applied:
Columbia - Sociomedical
Emory - BSHE
Tulane - Trop.
Boston - Sociobehavioral

No on Columbia. We probably won't hear until early March. I think last year they were able to check around the 10th of March.

Good luck!

Congrats to everyone that got in!

I was deciding between medical school and public health and realized that public health was a better route for me. My background is in microbiology and I applied for MPH/MS programs focusing on infectious diseases. My applications were sent from mid-November to early-January. Here's my status:

GWU - Accepted!
Berkeley - Accepted!
Tulane - Waiting
UPitt - Waiting
UAlbany - Waiting
Hopkins - Waiting

Darn you waiting game, although my heart is set on Berkeley 🙂

Congrats on your acceptances! How did GWU notify you of your acceptance and about how long did they take for them to notify you? Thanks!

As for GW - I sent the SOPHAS app mid-November and heard early January. So maybe a month or two? They were really fast with their response. Good luck to you!

Just got my first response... hopefully it is the only bad one I get.

UWashington Biostatistics - Denied

Apparently they had 200 applicants this year! 😱 Still, it wasn't my first choice (still hoping for UMin to take me with an RA), but I'm going to write to the Washington's grad admissions director to see how I can improve my chances to get a PHd from UWashington. 😎

Still Waiting:
UMinnesota
UTexas
Emory

That's a positive way of looking at it. 🙂

How'd they notify you? Email? Snail mail? I'm nervous bc some Epi people have heard and I haven't heard either way so I'm just getting nervous here...

I remember seeing a post somewhere, might of been someone who posted on this site, that said "There are many paths to heaven". Hopefully that path to my biostats degree won't be a long one.

I sent my application in on 1/3/10, and Sophas mailed it on 1/12/10.

My sister told me I had mail today, and out of curiousity I checked out the UWashington grad application site to see if it was updated. Lo and behold, my status was on the main page, so you might want to check that as well.

Just got an email this evening from USC saying I was accepted into their MPH program. 4 for 4 so far but still waiting on my top choices.

Accepted:
Michigan
USC
UC-Davis
Saint Louis University

Waiting:
Washington
Berkeley
UCLA
Oregon Joint MPH
SFSU
SDSU
San Jose State

which site was it? I've been checking the graduate site but it just says submitted...

Accepted
USC (01/21)
UTPH (02/12)
Waiting
UCLA(top choice)..... pls UCLA accept me by the end of February ... plz.
UCBerkeley
SDSU

University of Texas Houston emailed me yesterday to let me know I was accepted! I was really thrilled since this is the first school I've heard back from, and it's only been one month to the day since I submitted my apps. I thought schools didn't inform people until at least March. :-D

They offered me a new student scholarship, but I don't think it will be that much. Anybody know anything about their scholarships?
hi i have been accepted there too. no scholarships but. also in suny, buffalo and univ of north texas too

Congrats....when did you apply? I am waiting right now.

My school doesn't have credit hours so I had issues with SOPHAS, but they ended up sending it out 1/20. I heard back February 11. I am not sure how much the SOPHAS delay really affected it though because we had to fill out most of the same info on the UW website.

GOOD LUCK!:luck: Waiting is the worst. I hope you hear back soon.

for those who heard from UW and Berkeley:

what time of day did your emails come?

😍

I haven't heard back from Berkeley, but I got a UW email at 5:20 PM central time which was exciting/unexpected because I wasn't expecting any more emails for the day since it was after 5pm my time - haha😛

and last night they sent me financial aid info at 12:30 AM central time. Very strange.

UCMaroon, very cool! I got a FAFSA-based email from them last night around the same time. Didn't say much, though. Just "we got your FAFSA; who are you?" How'd their funding department treat you? I've been very interested to know what their packages are like. But maybe your email was as vapid as mine. Either way, CONGRATS!!

I submitted the application one month ago, but have not received anything. But I am an international student, thus do not know if it will take a little bit longer to process everything.

And what major do you apply?

haha- Yeah I got the same email. It seems really unclear to me if they even have merit based funding packages and I assume it will be a while before we hear about need based.
The Epi website encourages us to reach out to faculty for funding -since faculty handle their money separately. Which seems really cumbersome/ overwhelming. Does anyone know/ have experience with this kind of system or know more about what UW wants us to do?😱

I figured I have been lurking long enough and should add to the stats.

GPA: 3.6-3.8; top-tier school; public health focused degree
GRE: 1280-1320
3 years related work experience

Accepted: UW (Epi), Michigan (Epi), Emory (Global Epi), Tulane (Epi), Hopkins (IH), UNC (Epi)

Waiting: Harvard (Epi), Columbia (IH/Epi)

I submitted most of my applications right before they were due. Hopkins I just found out about today through their applyyourself website.

Anyone have any idea what Harvard's timeline is?

For those of you who have heard back from Michigan Epi- how did you find out via Email? Snail Mail? and what was your time line?

Thanks! I am getting nervous:xf:

Why is hopkins taking so long?????????🙁
has anyone ben nominated for scholarship at hopkins?

They have scholarships for masters students? I was under the impression that all the money is for PhD students (and even then, not all PhDs get funded).

I sent my app in the day before it was due and heard back Feb 5 (from the main school) and then (oddly) again Feb 15 (from the public health school). Both messages were sent by e-mail.

I've got my fingers crossed for you! Where else are you considering?

I've been putting this off also. Seems so awkward...

Can you imagine saying "I like your research....got any money?"

When I talked to UW a while back they told me that there is basically no money for masters students, not even RA/TAships as most of these go to PhD students. One of the challenges at UW is that they don't have a public health focused undergrad major so you can't TA for those courses like you would at other schools and you can't TA for grad courses until you have taken them. If you have specialized knowledge in other areas though (like anthro or geography) you can TA for those undergrad courses but keep in mind that you will be competing for positions with MAs and PhDs in those departments.

That aside, they are supposed to have an amazing epi program plus housing costs in Seattle are pretty reasonable and public transit is good so there is no need for a car.

I'm a little overwhelmed by this process. I wish they gave us a little more guidance. Have you sent a list of faculty to the department so they can give you suggestions yet? If so, was it helpful?

My top two choices now are Emory and UW... but that may or may not change depending on what Michigan and Harvard say. Sigh. Waiting is no fun.

Not yet, but I'm going to get on that this week. I think I'm just going to e-mail some of the profs directly and maybe e-mail the dpeartment also to see if they have any additions to my list.

UCMaroon and MPH0205 - are you guys planning on going to the visit day?

Yes, I'm going to the visit days. I'm from the Washington DC and have never been to Seattle, so I think a visit is necessary before I make my decision.

Come on, GW! You're the last one I need to hear from!

I am not going to go to the official visit day since it is right before my crazy finals week. 😱 But I am going to do my own visit day later on in March.

Question- Are you guys emailing and hoping to talk with them when you visit? or just one?
Since it seems like most of the better funding options are focused on PhD students...what exactly is the point of these reach outs? To potentially help with their research/ get involved? Do most professors decide that kind of stuff this far in advance? (Clearly I am overwhelmed/confused by this whole reach out process)

Another lurker here. Got my first rejection today and for some reason this has prompted me to post:

Accepted: Pitt, UMinn, Tulane (All MPH programs)
Rejected: UNC (MSPH/PHD program)
Waiting: Hopkins, Berkeley

Stats: 3.7 GPA, 1380 GRE, <1 yr pub health experience (though it was abroad) and mostly unrelated undergrad degree (soc)

Still hoping for Hopkins or Berkeley but feeling less optimistic by the day...

glas - What concentration did you apply for at each school?

Just received my acceptance via email for the Dept of Population, Family, and Reproductive Health

Got my first rejection today... UW for Epi. However, Epi was my 2nd choice - I also applied to another dept/concentration at UW and have yet to hear from them. But that's ok... I think my heart is set on Hopkins.

The email talked about the economic crisis and budget cuts which is the same thing I fear for Berkeley.

Rejected: UW (Epi)
Accepted: UT, Hopkins, Yale, Michigan, UNC (PhD)
Still waiting: Berkeley, Harvard, Columbia, UW (genetics)
