Hey Pre-pharm students,
Do you guys mind sharing the classes you will be taking this fall.
I will start
Organic 1 ( scared of it )
A and P
Statistics
Pharmacy Application
Physics 2 or Calculus 2 ( will decided on monday morning)

I am also studying for the October PCAT .....lol......
 
This is my first semester as a Biology/ Pre-Pharmacy major, so I'm not in many advanced classes yet. Also, I plan to finish my B.S. before applying to Pharmacy schools.

My classes for Fall are:

Microbiology and Lab
Statistics and Lab
Trigonometry
Intro to Theatre Art
Spanish III for Health Professions
 
Organic 1
Pathology course
Psyc course on the biopsychological principles of the five senses
Music course
History course
Global Health

Also working as a pharm tech part time and have various leadership roles in organizations. Wanted to take physics instead of one of my classes, but I was concerned it would be too much.

I don't think replacing one of those courses with physics would make your schedule too hard.

This is an upper level micro course, right? Many schools offer both a lower level and upper level micro course and for the pharmacy schools that require micro, the lower level courses usually are not acceptable

With you still being in OChem 1 - and not knowing how much physiology you will have had... You may find the PCAT extremely difficult in October due to you not having covered much of the material on it.

Intro to Lit
US History II
Microbio w/ lab (upper)
Genetics w/o lab
Gen. Bio I w/ lab (for those that remember that mix up with my prev. Bio course)

All in all I will be taking 18 cr. hrs + studying for the PCAT.

Thats why we have something called studying........ I believe if you finish bio 1 and 2 , chem 1 and 2 and some math class you should be ready for the pcat. @ least while taking Organic 1. ..... If i remember well thats what alot of people on SDN do .

Shouldn't be too bad, but I am counting on having to teach myself the biochem. The instructor isn't big on lecturing. The husband is starting school this fall, and we had to offset our schedules to avoid paying for daycare. I might forget that I have one by the end of the semester!

I'm pretty sure none of the schools that I'm interested in require it, however I could be mistaken. Also, it is a 300-level course.

Well, I have no foundation in physics, as I never took it in high school. I go to to a top 5 university and our sciences are quite rigorous. Since I haven't done so great in my previous science courses here, I really need to get A's in the ones I am taking this semester. That's why I didn't want to risk taking on too much. My organic professor gives less than 10% A's each semester. With that said, I wanted to be able to focus a lot of time on organic because so few people get A's. It is probably manageable, but at this point, I'd rather not risk having another sub-par semester.

If you're properly prepared for the PCAT, you don't need to study specifically for the PCAT at all... Much easier to take the right courses before taking it - that trying to teach that much material to yourself...

You should be fine then if it's a junior level class with a lab. Many schools already require it and more probably will in the (near) future.

If you're good at math (algebra and maybe basic calculus) and you normally do well in other sciences then intro physics shouldn't be hard for you at all. Don't let Ochem scare you, it's not that hard, just a lot of material - that builds on itself - so difficult to catch up if you fall behind and/or if you're a last minute crammer that doesn't actually study...

Totally dreading mythology- my teacher sent an email with what we will be doing in class. It includes writing and performing a 30 minute play as the final exam.....shoot me!
 
This will be my last pre-pharmacy semester....

Cant wait to be done. I will get the entire spring semester off from school before I (hopefully) start pharmacy school at Sullivan University next summer.

If your advanced Ochem lab is anything like the advance synth lab I had to take, then I feel for you - nothing like spending about 20 hours one week in the lab, only to find out the next week that your yield sucked and you have to re do it all - just to be a week behind where you wanted to be by that time... Or finding out the hard way, that the pores in a Hirsch funnel/filter are larger than your crystals...

Getting a big course load done in order to prepare for Orgo 1 and Physics (not really my strong suit) in the future so I wont have to cram other classes next to it. Maybe i'll throw in Statistics class for a session 4 if I'm on point with grades 🙂

You can take physics 2 without calc 2? - non calc based physics?

Don't overestimate how well most people do...

It's a full course load, but it's also not too difficult by itself. But you'll be busy, between doing all this and teaching English. Are you doing that full time?
 
technically my third semester of college but i call it my second. well because i flunked all my classes my first one 🙁 but this is my fall course load.

Hello all, first post. Just finished Calculus, Freshman Comp, and Comm 1 this Summer (11 units in 8 weeks, huzzah!)

Fall 2010:

H. Anatomy and Lab
Intro Chem and Lab
Argument/Persuasion
English 2

Trying to get a pharmacy tech job in the area. Thoughts?

At my school it's actually only 70% of a full course load. I've just never taken this many sciences at once and am hoping I can handle it. The volunteering is only a few hours a week each and just for fun, since they base entry into pharmacy on gpa alone. Worst case scenario, I will drop the ECs and nutrition and just focus on getting A's (hopefully) in everything else.

What kind of system are you on, and what would be a full course load?

Back in 2002, this is my schedule for a semester:

O-Chem 2
Physics II
A and P
Human Anatomy
Microbiology
Speech (public speaking)
P-chem (toughest class ever)
Biochemistry

Just got one B in P-chem. The rest are As.

Bottom line: know ur limit. If u're hardcore enough, you can get all pre-req for pharmacy in 2 semesters.

I already took the course and have credit for both it and Gen Bio II at my university. However, at the CC where I took it back in the day, they changed it to a non-science major course and I ran into an issue with it when I was applying last year for pharmacy schools. It's a long and complicated story.😡

I don't think taking orgo while taking the PCAT is a problem. Maybe a couple questions might be on things you haven't covered but I thought that the orgo questions were things taught in orgo 1 (I seem to remember nomenclature was a big part on mine). I think if you are taking orgo 1 and read a PCAT review book, you should be fine for the orgo chemistry part.

I think not taking A & P will be a much bigger problem. In my experience, just taking first year bio (evolutionary bio and cell bio for me) was not enough. Taking during my sophomore year I got a 66th percentile on bio (86th composite so it's not like I didn't study and sucked really bad). After I took anatomy, physiology and other upper level sciences (but anatomy and physiology classes were the most helpful), it increased to the 99th and 94th percentile. SO, for me at least, it made a HUGE difference.

Depends on the way bio and a&p is taught at your school - also other classes like biochem cover a lot of those same things - so a lot of that depends on what other classes you've had too. As far as still being in ochem when you take the PCAT, I think a lot of it depends on how far into OChem you are. If you're taking it with only a 1/3 of a semester of OChem, then you haven't covered really very many reactions at all probably in class - not even E1/E2 and SN1/SN2 so... unless you absolutely must take the PCAT then, I'd still suggest waiting.

Well the Oct pcat is about 2 months into the course and for us, SN2/SN1/E2/E1 was already covered (or at least some of it was covered) but I don't remember orgo being stressed. I took it during many first semester of orgo and got a 93rd percentile. I thought it was mostly nomenclature and functional groups. Not knowing a ton of reactions didn't hurt me. When I took it 2 years after I took orgo and forgot most of the reactions, I didn't memorize every single orgo reaction and I still did fine.

Definitely agree that taking biochem helps but for me it was physiology that was the biggest help for me in the bio section.

In advice that I've given and heard regarding the PCAT, I have to say this is completely true. Sure, review things that you aren't particularly strong in, but I did the least amount of studying and scored my highest score in 3 tries because I'd just finished Organic I and A&P II. Those classes were supremely helpful having completed them just weeks before the test.

Yeah, I've more or less given up on giving PCAT advice to people on this forum... The few people that have had excellent results by spending lots of $$$ on prep material and studying Dr. Collins PCAT prep and things like that are very vocal about how great it is and people tend to believe what they want to hear so...

Oh well most of them will learn the hard way eventually... The whole concept of not studying for tests because you have studied the material over time and thus already know it is lost on most undergrad students...
