Hi guys,

I'm a Canadain IMG applying for FM in Ontario only. I got an email back on Christmas day stating that my application is being reviewed by a Joint Commission, and interview invites would be sent out on Dec 28th. Has anyone else received that email? Anyone receive a FM interview yet?

The CARMS website doesn't mention anything about this; it also says that interviews are sent out in late January, not December

Sorry to intrude but I'm curious CB re: which school you attended? I think the growing numbers of Canadian IMGs applying will be a force to reckon with in the next several years.

Good luck!

Haven't heard anything here on this side of the residency line ... If I hear something in the next few days (back in urgent care FM clinic today so maybe ...), I'll get back to you.

Happy New Year everyone!

Sincerely,
"Snowless in Kingston, Ontario" :( :D

BTW, CB congrats on the interview - Queen's is holding their interviews on the last Tues and Wed of Jan and the first Tues and Wed of Feb - I''ve been asked to help with the process and will be involved somehow ...

My friends applying to family have received a few invites- I've heard of Calgary, Ottawa, McGill...haven't heard anything about other Ontario schools or Quebec schools but that may be based on my friends and not actual invitation status.
I assume schools aren't doing a whole lot this week as it seems many people are on vacation...so I wouldn't expect a whole lot until at least the middle of next week.

Hi guys,

Sorry, i should clarify things alittle more. To UofTGradStudent, I actually graduated from St. George's University (Carribean) this past June, i did my undergraduate at UofT. To PattyCanuck, i actually haven't received an invite yet, i was just asking if anyone else has got the same email as I did.Now that I've cleared that up, this was the email I received back on Dec 25th from IMG Family Medicine Ontario:

Dear applicant,

Thank you for your application to one or more Family Medicine Programs in Ontario. Your application is being processed by our Joint Admissions Committee if you apply to any of the following schools:

Queen's University

University of Toronto

University of Ottawa

McMaster University

University of Western Ontario

Northern Ontario School of Medicine

There will only be one interview if you apply to one or more of the above schools. Your interview score will be shared among the schools that you apply to.

You will be notified if you are granted an interview by December 28, 2006. If you accept the offer for an interview, you will be asked to rank the schools that you apply to for the location of the interview, in order of preference. The deadline for ranking an interview site is January 4, 2007, at 1200 hrs EST. If we have not received your response by the deadline, we will assign you an interview site.

Thank you again for your interest, and good luck!

When I got this email back on Dec 25th, I thought it was very weird to be getting an email on Xmas Day stating interview invites would be sent out on Dec 28th because most of the program directors and support staff would be on xmas vacation. Anywho, Dec 28th has past and I haven't received an email for an interview and/or rejection yet. Is it me, or does something smell fishy here??

I'm not trying to brag or anything, but I considered myself a competitive applicant; I've applied to FM programs in the US as well, and I have interviews at Cleveland Clinic, UMASS, UCONN, U of Maryland just to name a few. Anyways, maybe i'm just being paranoid.....congrats to those IMG's who've gotten invites so far.

Happy new year to everyone!

That's a good list. What type of visa's did these schools offer you?

Hey Candian Bacon....most importantly, what was your mark on the MCCEE as that appears to the the deciding factor with the IMGO this year.

A friend just informed me that he has the invitation for ontario and has been asked to select a centre for the interview. All the best.

any body getting interview ,could you please out your marksofMCCEE , MCCQE1 and IMG Ontario here

little bit off topic here..

for those IMG or Carribean graduates, what procedure did you have to take for applying to Canadian residencies?

I am currently in the process of deciding on whether to attend med school in the carribean (SMU) or Australia (UNSW)

Thanks

IMG = international medical graduate?

For all those lucky IMGs who got interviews this yr, could you possibly post your scores of exams & whether you'll had any observership or research experience?

thanks

A msg for "patty canuck"

are you an IMG? & currently doing a residency at Queen's? Could you inform us about the factors which influence interview calls for residency programs? I applied to 11 programs this yr but did not receive a single interview call & im lost as to why?

additionally do you have IMG friends who have matched into residency programs in Canada?Could I get details on their exams, observership/research experiences?

I would like to improve my chances for next yr so any help will be appreciated?

Yes, I graduated from Ireland in 2003 - University College Dublin. I am in the Family Medicine program at Queen's. I also did my undergrad degrees and my master of science degree here before going over to Ireland for medical school.

You have to remember that this match is soooo different compared to past matches - first round spots for IMGs. Also that in last year's match there were waaay more spots for IMGs for FM in the second round than this year's first round. Likewise, many spots for specialists this year were full competative rather than just parallel like in Ontario. All in all, really more competition against Canadian grads than ever, and a big reason why many IMGs did not bode well in the first iteration - competing for less IMG spots overall. Where you will have a better chance is in the second iteration.

One unofficial factor is where you went to school. I assume that you are a Canadian that went abroad - not that it has anything to do with it. Likewise, when you graduated and what you did with your electives, etc. may have influenced your path to date. All of those that I know from my college in Ireland did match in the second round from years past up to last year. This year didn't fare well for those from UCD - only 2 got into the first round. It doesn't mean that they will clear this second round. Last year my wife and I interviewed as a couple (couples match) at 8 FM programs in the second round; I came back to my old stomping ground and was very happy with the result if that is any indication of how both my wife and I did in the match (with the constraints/rules at that time).

Not sure if that helps, but good luck with the second round. Assuming you are not limiting yourself to the first round (ie your 'next year' comment); just get your foot into the door and work it from the inside if the specialty you want isn't available in the second round.

Hey pattycanuck! I am also a queen's grad (undergrad+masters anat), in final med at TCD. I am hoping to get back to K-town too, in family but really worried about not getting back at all and don't know how am going to fair with new parallel stream 2008. (btw graduating december2007...had a baby girl last summer and making up ob/gyn in upcoming fall).

How are you liking the program? what are good bad points? any idea of policy around pregnancy and residency?

slan!
