What's your guys' favorite class that you've ever taken in your careers as students? I've heard of some crazy ones offered:

Zombies in Popular Media

Tree Climbing

Fly Fishing

Canoeing

Physics for Future Presidents (Learning about drones and nuclear bombs I guess)

Have any of you taken any crazy classes?

Theory of Jazz Improvisation. It was just 2 of us students, me (sax player) and a vocalist, and the professor. It was really awkward at first but it became the highlight of my week after a a couple sessions.

I also took an Intro to Film class with the head of the English department. Nothing fancy about that class, but holy crap it was a good one.

physical chemistry -thermodynamics
biological chemistry-membranes and channels

Israeli Politics - **** blew my mind, taught by an ex-Israeli journalist.

Taking "The Holocaust" next semester, could be interesting.

So far my fave class is Calc II, who's jelly?

chem 101, so many hot girls in that class

So far it's been like that for all of my chem classes. But then again I'm probably comparing it to the engineering classes... 60 people in one of my classes, 4-5 girls

I'd probably have to go with Portuguese for Spanish Speakers. It's not like any of the classes you listed, but it was my favorite. It was quickly paced since speaking Spanish was a pre-req so by the end of the course we were watching movies and reading poetry.

Income Diversity in Higher Education

A&P...then maybe first semester of orgo

Competitive Latin/Salsa Dancing II ... hands down, no questions

I took a wine tasting class that was technically a science credit so we got lectures on the different varietals of grapes and went on field trips to local vineyards and learned about grape vines and it was actually really neat. Then we got to drink wine... which was also awesome.

I took a "philosophy of torture" class that was pretty thought-provoking. I probably found parasitology to be the most interesting. Or forensics.

During my exchange in Morocco I took a sociology class. The instructor was an Iraqi-born Jew who spent a Peace Corps tour in Morocco and never left. As the only American in the class I was called on often. I never thought I could be so patriotic.

Best class for emotional maturity: Orchestra

Our conductor gave a sheet of paper, asked everyone to write down why we are taking this orchestra class, and I wrote down, "Because it reminds me what it means to be a human." I took this class almost every semester and didn't regret spending 4.5+ hours every week on rehearsals.

Best class for fun: Dance improvisation

One of things we learned was to draw a consensus without verbal communications. We needed to learn when and how to tone down your individuality, so that the whole improvisation as a group comes to a consensus and thus a finished product. Our final dance performance gave me a chill, because it was as if we danced by planned choreography. My whole perspective on dance changed. During the first day of the class, the professor said, "All the leaders who hate one another should dance together." I realized what she meant.

Best "class" for intellectual maturity: Research abroad for a semester

Everyday you wake up and you are surrounded by foreigners and other cultures. The first several weeks consist of firsthand experiencing how it feels like to be a minority. The last several weeks consist of noticing things that you never imagined before. These lessons force you to analyze and care about issues that are bigger than you. Not a single class I took in college is as intellectually stimulating as my whole research abroad experience. There is a reason why people regret in not going abroad during college. Strongly recommended.

Admitting I'm a nerd here, but Pathogenic Bacteriology was the coolest class I took in undergrad. The teacher ran part of the public health laboratory for the state and had some wild personal anecdotes as well as plenty of clinical information. As a bonus, we got to tour the lab and gaze into the BSL-3 vault doors/fear the TB inside. Super cool!

Physics- it was intellectually stimulating, challenging, yet intriguing. Enraptured by force diagrams, captivated by the simple elegance of a pulley problem, fascinated by friction, I found myself striving to accomplish more than what I had......[more smart- sounding phrases]

Wait, this isn't an interview?

My favorite:

AIDS- we covered everything from the public health aspects to pharmacology to treatments for OIs. I was never bored.

Icons of the American Republic. It was a Poli sci class with a heavy study of history through the artwork displayed in the US Capitol building. Not only was the class awesome, but we got to fly to DC as a class and take a private tour of the Capitol with our professor who was a former US Congressman and Senator (all paid for by the school). It just doesn't get better than that! Soooo amazing 🙂

Popular Culture in Early Modern Europe (we learned about witches and diviner

Africa's Triple Heritage and the Modern World. And Biochem 2.

You can tell by the number of Science classes listed that we are mainly nerds here on the Student Doctor Network

I took a World Regional Geography class. There was a lot of maps but we spent a ton of time talking about basic economics as well. Found it really interesting!

Survivor DO

Greek Literature.

Ever since, I've been the guy in English classes who won't knock it off with the classical parallelisms.

I didn't really have any cool classes to choose from at my UG. However I did take a class in Criminology that was pretty interesting. Plus, the professor looked liked Snake from Metal Gear Solid, complete with eye-patch.

One of my favorites was honestly probably one of my worst... the professor was extremely disorganized and would schedule/unschedule tests, papers, etc. one class before the date. She forgot my name halfway through the class. However, it ended up being something I looked forward to because the class was just so damn ridiculous/hilarious and everyone in the class got pretty close from bonding over the cray.

I took a History of Epidemics course. That was pretty cool. I also took an Arab/Israeli history class which was really interesting.

Otherwise my favorites were the classes where I got to do really big independent projects because I could choose subjects I was really passionate about. I wrote a huge paper on Harry Potter for an editing theory class.

Cancer Biology.

Best course ever if you take it with a certain prof at my school. Lets just say she is a very well known forefront of cancer research and is also an amazing professor teaching-wise.

I really liked "Suicide Terrorism" and "Intro to European Folktales"

physical chemistry -thermodynamics
biological chemistry-membranes and channels

PCHEM?!?!😱

Freshman Year - Orgo I & II

Sophmore Year - Health Economics & Inorganic Chemistry

Junior Year - Biochemistry II & Immunology

Senior year - Operations and Supply Chain Management (due to professor) & Business Decision Modeling

Freshman Year: MacroEconomics.

Sophomore- Biological Psychology

Junior I- Biochemical Techniques Lab, Multivariable Calculus

Junior II (took me 3 years to finish at the CC because I was super busy with touring with a band)- Human Physiology, Endocrinology, Ethnographic Field work in San DIego

Senior (upcoming)- Immunology, Pharmacology, Cellular Neurobiology, Systems Neurobiology, Physiology of Pregnancy, AID's Epidemiology

Gotta be Behavioral Endocrinology. Dat LH surge gets me hard........

😱

If I'm correct with my assumption for what this means. You are female.

Our teacher (MD/PhD retired OB/GYN) told them to take COX-2 inhibitors a few days before this LH surge, so it inhibits PG synthesis. I'm sure you know this by now haha.

Drugs & Behavior. Learned so much about the misconceptions on drugs. Also, how shady big pharma, FDA, doctors, etc. are ..........

Also, neuroanatomy. I love the brain. 😍

Anthropology of Food. Lunch always tasted better after 1.5 hours of talking about it. And, talking about the social and evolutionary bases of cuisines was pretty cool too.

History of Baseball

and Intro to religion (taught by the dalai lama through a translator...no joke)

Favorite Overall: Ceramics. Throwing on a potter's wheel is just awesome. And cathartic.

Favorite Lecture: Astrophysics class where the professor claimed to be from the future because he was wearing a blazer in a color that hadn't been invented yet. Continued by explaining his theory of a funnel-shaped universe that would be like a pizza with a slice missing. He would demonstrate if only he had remembered to order pizzas for the class. But oh wait, time travel is theoretically possible - cue TA's to walk into the lecture hall with 40 pizzas.

Favorite Exam: Written final for Physiology class: 10 page essay on the physiology of a zombie and how they could theoretically function, using knowledge of mammalian anatomy.

Took a class about dinosaurs. It was everything I hoped it would be.

Korean language class

I enjoyed Ochem a lot as well...especially Ochem lab once I got the hang of things.

Don't get me wrong, I love my science classes, however, I very much enjoyed an honors seminar titled "Conflict in America". That class always seemed to go by so fast, sort of like sitting through a good movie where you lost track of time. I 😍ed it. I loved doing the presentations (even did extra ones) 😳

I am intrigued/jealous/in awe/slightly confused...all in one at this. If that's not fictional, that is awesome. 👍

History of Rock and Roll. Really cool class, complete with trip to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland!

You'll have to take my word on the pizza, but google image search for J Richard Gott and you'll see the blazer in all it's glory. He started the lecture by walking up to the podium, putting a briefcase inside, then leaving. He came back five minutes later wearing different clothes, and saying that when he figures out practical time travel he would have to come back to that moment and drop off his briefcase, because he had forgotten to bring his lecture notes that night. He then proceeded to find the briefcase his "future" self had left.

I always loved it when you could tell that a professor had a true passion for teaching! I had my fair share of professors that seemed to just go through the motions, and it was always refreshing to have a teacher like this.
