Hey, I know this is probably a common question but I just wanted to receive some feedback on some diversity essay questions.
1. I'm South Asian, first-generation American. That by itself, obviously, is not so diverse. However, growing up without contact of many of my own kind, I've always been curious about Indian culture and where my family came from. That has had a part in developing a huge passion for learning about history, social science, and other cultures. History classes have always been my favorite throughout my academic career actually. I read a lot of history/polisci/social science books, documentaries.
I get excited by working with different cultures and perspectives. I've got some experience volunteering with an NGO abroad that requires me to navigate some cultural barriers (currently involved, not medically related), ESL tutoring was a most meaningful experience, and some minor stuff like study abroad and world culture fair stuff.
I suppose I used to shy away from my own heritage when I was younger, but now I'm pretty proud of it and celebrate it more. I also definitely believe in the value of other cultures and love learning about them. Immigrant/migrant populations are a particular passion of mine in terms of a group I'd love to work with in the future. Understanding some of the sociopolitical context of their background or culture can obviously be useful for a physician.
2. I've actually toyed with the idea of business and medicine throughout undergrad. Have taken a lot of business classes, computer science classes, and even participated in this tech start up thing where we tried to design an app company. It's offered an interesting perspective into a world that I don't think most premeds have? But I'm not particularly too skilled in any of it. And it's certainly not my primary focus going forward but I am definitely glad of the experiences I've had in it.
