Money is good in all of them. Lifestyle is harsh in Gyn/Onc (really long surgeries + really sick patients). Lifestyle is pretty hard in MFM, although it depends on how you tailor your practice. REI probably has the best lifestyle and money but it's evolving, from what I understand, IVF isn't quite the cash cow that it once was.

Chris, how do you figure the "hard life" in MFM? Just curious, as that hasn't been my impression.

As I am on call with about 4 MFMs that are working their tails off I may be a bit biased 😀 That's why I said it depends on how you tailor your practice. Academic MFMs work pretty hard at some place the MFMs run L&D so they still deliver and do C Sections at 4 AM. Some private practice MFMs do ultrasounds all day and do consults for generalists and haven't seen a Labor floor since the day they finished fellowship.

I have little actual numbers for REI and GynOnc but this is what a very senior MFM that used to be in academics and now works in private practice has told me.
Money is variable depending on type of practice and location. Academic MFMs can make as little as 180k base salary with bonuses if they take more calls. In private practice you can make 300-600k depending where you work with little call. The high paying spots are for MFMs doing high volume ultrasounds and consults for generalist groups where they will typically never see a labor floor but they crank out hundreds of scans and consults a month.

Sounds about right for MFM. Offers I'm getting right now (mind you, just started) are low 200's for pure acedemic, 300-400 for pseudo-acedemic (some resident interaction), and high 400-500 for private.
Yow-zah. Ob/Gyn is what I'm currently most interested in, and if I wasn't already considering MFM as a subspecialty, I think I would be now.
Any of you guys have any idea about malpractice for these subspecialties (particularly REI and MFM)? Is it lower or higher?
Do REI guys usually deliver babies?? Or do they just do their IVF and leave the OB stuff to generals??
Any self respecting REI would not be caught dead on a labor floor. They generally will leave the management of their handywork to the MFMs since they have a habit of generating high risk pregnancies 😀
our REI takes resident call. our MFMs do not...i find that very interesting, and likely unusual!
