I just read on USN that

Students in certain health fields have higher maximums. Starting July 1, 2012, they can borrow up to $47,167 a year and up to $224,000 in total through the Stafford program.

If this is the case, then how does anyone whose parents aren't helping get through say most public and definitely private med school education?

GradPLUS loans are also a popular option. They're provided through the Department of Education but are based on your credit, so you would probably want a cosigner. Private loans are also an option.

(sent from my phone - please forgive typos and brevity)

OP, they borrow wherever they can. GradPLUS is an option, but its interest is 7.9%. Private loans? Possible, but I would stay away from them. Today they will lure you with a 3% interest, and tomorrow they will bump it up to 30%. In my opinion, usually when it comes to money, private companies are much harder to deal with then the government.
