Are any of you into crating music?
If so, do you think its possible to find time to create music while being successful in med school?

P.S. I would love to incorporate music prodction into my PS. Any syggestions on how to do that?

Yes – I think there will be plenty of time to do whatever activity you enjoy. Just be sure you put serious effort into school. So spending a few hours a week doing music stuff should be no problem – but if you were a member of a band that toured or performed every night, obviously that is a little more difficult. Also, some medical schools have music groups (you will find that your classmates in medical school have very unique talents).

Sure – you can put into your personal statement, without knowing the specifics of your music experiences I couldn’t really tell you how.

There can be time to enjoy your hobbies. However, it may take some time until you get used to the academics.

From what I read from a particular medical school, the first things to really focus on while in medical school are: keeping your identity (i.e. spiritual, etc.) intact, maintaining family relations, and focusing on school. Once you've got all that down (which is feasible), hobbies can come into play.

Since it is still a year until I can give a firsthand opinion on the issue, perhaps some M1-M4's can provide some valuable input.

If music is something that's really important to you, by all means put it in your statement! I was a music major in college, so the whole focus of my PS was how music has influenced me/why a music performance major would choose a career in medicine. I've been able to use this a lot in my interviews, etc as well. Schools really like to see that you have hobbies/interests outside of science, volunteering, and all the other typical pre-med stuff. Showcase why you are unique and how your specific interests/traits have shaped you into a person who will become an excellent physician. (P.S. Some of the schools I'm looking at even have orchestras, bands, and chamber ensembles for the medical students to pursue their musical talent. University of Chicago and University of Michigan are two that come to mind.)

Sorry, I guess it’s worth mentioning that I'm an MS3 (anonymity can help in certain areas of the board while hinder others). So take my above post from experience, you will have time in medical school. However, I agree with Dendrite. Don’t put too much on your plate at the beginning ease these other activities into your schedule once you have figured out how you study.

There's time for plenty of things outside medical school... you just have to prioritize and manage your time appropriately (something I still don't do well). I play in our church orchestra (about 80 members), which requires a total of about 5 hours in a typical week, perhaps a few more as Christmas gets closer, and perhaps 20 hours for a week early in December when we do a series of productions and again in the spring for a concert.

I used to sing in our school's choral group, but gave that up as their rehearsal time just took too big a chunk out of the free afternoons I had left. Something had to go, and I'd rather play than sing.
