Hello fellow med students. I think it would be thought provoking to start a thread about how some of us have found sympathy for ill patients. Not just "Oh, I feel bad for them" but "Damn. Been there, done that. Anything I can do to help you get through what I did, I promise I will do."

For me, it's been many things but recently, I went to the doc for not feeling well, mostly just general malaise and drowsiness. I got a call the next morning saying "Hello zmeister22. This is generic,RN at Dr. Physician's office. Don't go to class. Go to the hematologist's office because you have a platelet count of 20. Oh, and don't cut yourself."

The big L (leukemia) has been ruled out, but I'm still left wondering... and bruising like crazy. I ache where I bruise and frankly, black/blue/green/yellow/purple is NOT a sexy color.

WOW that's an incredibly low count, its a severe form of thrombocytopenia. Well first thing its good leukemia has been ruled out but start with avoiding blood thining agents, aspirin, and even apples. Your superficial bleeding spots are called petechiaes very much a classic platelet disorder sign. There are many causes it might be viral or autoimmune...just don't even bother about school right now get yourself taken care of, good luck!

Right there with you. Buried my mom this spring and then got ten weeks into first year only to discover that I'm having thyroid issues and might have to undergo a biopsy. No stress at all, right? I figure at least I'll be able to communicate better with my patients.

I hope you feel better soon.
