Fireside Chat with Guero: a unique, tattooed, non-trad accepted applicant.

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
one suggestion would be to have proper introductions so people could put the answers/opinions in context. is everyone an MS-0 except NickNaylor? MD or DO? Which school?

Great feedback, we'll definitely do that next year. Thank you.

Perhaps just write a really brief intro in the description?

Like SDN handle + DO/MD class of 2017...

I think we might have done that, except I arrived late to the chat 😛

I'm sure Guero can add it in the YouTube description. I'd recommend putting the question list there as well so non-SDNers who find it also have access to it.

Thanks guys! I only got to watch about 15m before I had to get back to studying but I hope to watch the rest at another time.

Love the video guys I really apperciate yall doing that for us!
Sidenote suggestion: can we get some ladies next year?

You guys watching all 2 hrs? Lol

If I could (and if I had the time) I would edit the YouTube video description with a hyperlink to the start time for each question. For example "question by xSDNer starting at 1:15:23" or something like that. That would be the easiest to use. That would just take some time to do
😉

I think each incoming class should most certainly make their own Q&A vids. The one we do next year will be from MS1/OMS1 perspective I believe. Not that this would preclude a lady from joining us I guess. 😀

Opened video.

Noticed no (hot) women.

Saw like five dudes (sorry you guys aren't the best looking dudes either).

Typed in "sexy scantily clad pole dance" into youtube. Great study break!

Back to work! :naughty:

This implies you saw women there. I would be a very ugly woman, and have been called attractive by women other than my wife, not that I would rely heavily upon their estimation...
Nobody else was a woman. Explain thyself

Make SDN history.

Get MedPR on the next fireside chat.
I know MedPR, and they are a private person. Probably wouldn't be interested.

That would be so nice. If anyone has time for it 😀 Back to the mcat studying..

Great watch! Super helpful and encouraging!

Would also like to know where everyone is matriculating?

Congrats and on to the next step!

FTFY. Remember, some people are still waitlisted and waiting to hear from financial aid before making their final decision.

I just watched this video and wanted to say you guys were great and thanks for covering my question in great length!!

This is cool. Just have to say though that it'd be good to hear these answers from those that are a little more nontrad--aka, older--like 40 or >. I think with those folks, some of the answers may be different. Eg., a mid to late 20 something or even mid 30 something will often be viewed a lot differently than those that are a decade out of undergrad. Just saying.

Again, really nice idea. It'd be nice to hear from some, uh, older applicants in this format.

I'm sure the user "dsoz" wouldn't mind answering any questions you may have. He falls within the range you seek and is a very knowledgeable, personable user. He'll be one of my classmates.

I didn't see him in the presentation? I'd like to get more imput on age bias after 40. I don't think people are being forthright about this. I remember a while back there was one med student or so that mentioned some comments that alluded to this kind of bias during interviews.

It's an advantage to look younger for your age, but once they look at the numbers, it may certainly come up.

There, click on his username and send him a message. I'm sure he wouldn't mind talking to you.

I sent jl lin a message. Jumping into the conversation. 🙂

I didn't feel like there was any discrimination for me. I am age>40. I will admit that I have some grey in my beard that I used some hair dye to cover up when I was in interviews. But looking back, that was probably superfluous.

I felt like I had more interview offers than I could possibly afford to attend. I canceled all of my other interviews (except OHSU, my #1 choice school) after my second acceptance (which was at my #2 choice school). The only difference between them, in my mind, was that Western would have required me to move 90 minutes away, and OHSU allowed me to keep the house, and my could keep the same job (health insurance and pay the mortgage).

BTW- Nice job on the video guys! Thanks for the shout-out. I look forward to meeting you Gurero. I really enjoyed the conversation I had with Dudeliness before the Western interview! I will admit I only watched the first hour... 🙂

Yes, thanks for that, and I agree. Love the whole idea of the fireside chat. This should have been done long ago. Who knows? Maybe it was.

Dr. Oz. I replied back; but it had to do with allopathic schools and their perspectives on 40 and >.

Thanks again.

I want to reiterate a big thanks to all of you for taking the time!

Sure did. Coffee some time after anatomy lab. I don't drink beer (or alcoholic beverages), but I could have a coke while you consume if you wish. I look forward to hearing more of your story.

Dr. Oz. lol. I wish I got paid like he does. Stupid autocorrect. I replied, but can't talk in general, because my experience is so limited. I didn't try for "big name" schools (except OHSU), and I was hones with myself about my stats that I didn't apply to schools that were out of my reach. I was exactly average for OHSU, slightly above average for UA Phoenix, and above average for all the DO schools. For all the MD schools, I was near their average, +/- 2 LizzyM points. Also, I didn't apply to schools that had a large IS bias. If they didn't take at least 30-40% OOS, then I didn't bother sending them an application.

Question List

0:57 Sinombre: What do you know about the process now that you wish you had known before applying?

5:19 mmmmd: Do you predict that your experiences growing up in diverse communities will make you a better physician? why?

12:45 Goobs: My question would be how do you think you changed as an applicant during your post-college years and what do you think the pros and cons of being a non-trad are?

16:36 Doctor Strange: Also, you've been very open about having to take on a significant amount of pre-medical school debt. What have been the ramifications of this decision, and what plans do you have with regards to repayment?

24:29 Psychkub: As an older student, how have you changed your approach to studying? Do you do anything in particular to keep your mind sharp? (dsoz is far older)

29:40 The Beyonder: Would you apply DO again? What do you feel sets you apart from other applicants?

39:19 thesauce: What makes you unique (aside from being an older than average applicant) and what do your tattoos have to do with anything? Congrats on your acceptance.

39:47 LaPresse: I heard from somewhere that Vandy was lacking in its clinical skills--those taught to medical students in MS3 and MS4. Which schools generally have a reputation for superior clinical skills?
busy general hospital.

43:47 ObviouslyTeal: Question about the tattoos -- how extensive are they exactly? And what do you plan to do about cover up (if anything at all!) during med school and beyond? I wonder how much the general perspective on people with tattoos and piercings is changing now, especially in the medical field.

48:21 Calvinandhobbs68: How much did all those tats run you (total)?

48:53 plumazul: Have you seen the movie and/or read the book "The Illustrated Man", and if yes;
did you think it was a great book/movie, or the greatest book/movie you've ever seen/read? Also has the work of Ray Bradbury had any effect on your life?

49:49 mmmmd: please describe the process you went through in writing/crafting your personal statement and secondary application essays

1:03:18 pre-med 2014: As a non-trad did you find the interviewers to be particularly focused on your motivations to become a physician?

1:04:52 What do you feel adcomms greatest concerns are about career changers, late bloomers, non-trads, etc..., are they concerned about proper motivation, or ability to handle the rigor of med school?
and how would one best address those concerns during interviews/ in personal statements?

1:12:18 lobo12: Tips for MMI, how to prepare for interviews in general

1:25:50 What was your rational for the schools you applied.
How to determine if a schools are OOS friendly.
1:40 How different is the tmdsas and aacomas from amcas.
1:43:14 What was it in your app that adcoms liked the most.

1:50:45 acslater99: Might sound like a dumb question but, Once you apply to a certain school do you automatically get a secondary?

1:54:37 Parting thoughts
