Hi,

Has anyone used Firstaid USMLE step1 book to prepare for NBDE part 1?

How useful it is?

Which sections are important to know? For example, the pharmacology seciton of organ system is not related to our exam, is it?

Thanks a lot.

just go over it for review, and no pharmaco is not part of NBDE 1 but if you see the name of a drug familiar to you go over it brifly. I found that useful on the area that was not so clear for me in physio and phato. I studied kaplan lecture notes.

thanks for your reply. i have already gone over the decks once, feel kind of confused and don't remember a thing!! will be writing part in 1 month and already stressed out. so appreciate if you could let me know i have to go over the decks again, start with first aid usmle or the kaplan review notes? or probably the BRS books!??

sorry not in 1 month1!!! that was a type, i will be writing it in 4 months!! thanks.

You might try first aid for the NBDE. I used it . The information in it was very targeted toward the NBDE. I thought it helped a lot.

but i have heard usmle first aid is much more helpful than nbde first aid for part 1, please help anyone?

well you have 4 month so you can do kaplan and then go over usmle first aid now a days decks are not enough. I heard kaplan first aid has lots of wrong stuf but I am not sure I did not study that. I have my test on OCT28 for second time I got 83 before. This time I went over deck carefully and kaplan usmle forst aid and some subjects for oclussion on line. I hope I can make it to 90.😉

I used First Aid USMLE Part I to study for NBDE I and I think it was a GREAT resource. The best combination I found useful was study First Aid USMLE first for review, do dental decks, and then study released exam questions. When studying released exam questions, make sure you understand why the correct answer is correct AND why the wrong answers are wrong. My buddy and I studied it this way and he got the highest score in the class and I got the fifth highest score.

Good luck!

Hi, MBM76:
I hope you will get there.
I have question for you, I know I have to wait for 90 day to have next test. But I just want to know whether I can book the test day before that because I have to take the next one before mid of Dec. Could you tell me how you booked your second test? Thank you so much

Keep in mind that when i took the NBDE last year, it was the first time they implemented the new format which the highest score achieved nationally was a 95. 🙁 (see http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=569602 for more info) Before the new format, the highest scores hovered around 98. I scored a 89 (I received 4 ortho interview invites with this score) and the highest score made at my school was a 93 (he received 14 OMFS interview invites). The number 1 ranked in my class made an 88 (received 6 ortho interview invites). That shows you how unfairly the new formatted NBDE were scaled 😡 but it also shows that the schools are aware of the situation. I believe ADA corrected the issue this year and highest scores on NBDE part I are back to the 98 range. So if you study well you will get a good score. 🙂

What I found helpful if you are getting near to test time is to look over dental decks and make sure you know everything! Looking at old exam questions was helpful but it takes A LOT of work going through and learning why the answers are wrong or right. At this stage, I would use First Aid USMLE as quick review for physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, and anatomy. Then do dental decks all the way. The information on dental decks are very informative and it would be in your best interest to study them well.

Also, you want to manage your time well. Put more study time into the areas you are weakest. Really, there is no need to study dental anatomy very much. That section was easy for everyone. You should get 85+ in this section easily. I would focus mostly on biochemistry/physiology and microbiology/pathology. These sections were the hardest and will earn you tons of points if you score well. Just to give you an idea, I scored above 90 in dental anatomy and anatomic sciences, 77 in biochem/physio, and 83 in micro/path range and received a composite score of 89. The person who scored a 90 did not score above 90 in any section but did score low 80s in biochem/physio and micro/path. 😱 That shows you how heavily weighted these two sections are so focus on those towards the end of your studies.

Hope this helps you out some.

Good Luck! :luck:
