Since we have one SDN faithful starting D-School today i thought i would take the liberity of creating a forum for first day expierences. So Perfect, how was it?

I was just about to make a thread like this. Perhaps we should move it to the dental forum??

That might be a good idea, i'll go ahead and do that.

I bet perfect has his head buried in some gross anatomy textbook right now.

sorry guys i couldn't be on sdn earlier today.

anyways, better late than never. so here we go;

we had a very long day today. our day started at 7.30 with breakfast and and lasted until 5pm. to be honest with you, after waiting for this day to come for soooo long, i felt very emotional about finally being in a class room and listening to several diff faculty members, professors, and the dean of our school. there is simply nothing like it. it takes you back to when you first sent out your AADSAS appl. it reminds of the many difiicult days that you had when you were applying. it reminds you of the day when you went to interview and finaly here you are ACCEPTED.

not even WOW could describe it. lol

now as for the orientation itself, i felt that it was waaaaay too long. we spent several hours going over the curr and what the school stood for and how to do your FAFSA etc etc. although it wasn't too bad, i felt that we could have done it in a shorter amount of time. the best part is that we have another long day just like it tomorrow except that tomorrow we will spend at least 4 hrs going over the PBL stuff.

so, my general thought for the day was a positive one. we got to learn what to expect as a student, how diff the curr would be and how we would manage ourselves to be the best we could possibly be.

I was late for my first day of actual D school! That kinda looked bad, but I have been late just about every day since then too, so they are kinda used to it! My first class, was gross, and after "grouping" up and going into where my dead dude lay , I started asking myself, what the heck am I doing here. My first semester I started to learn (I know this is corny) how cool teeth really are, and have fell in love with dentistry ever since!!!!

btw what in the heck is this spam can on the smiles for? :spam:

Congrats! Glad you made it through your first day.

In a year you'll look back and realize that orientation is probably just one of a long list of worthless and time consuming things that happen in dental school.

Keep us updated!

Hearing that story.......... just makes me excited to get started.

What's w/ people having avatars of them and their g/f......just a harmless question.. It's funny, because your avatar is like the exact same shot as JRogoff(sp).

... and JRogoff's pic was modeled after aphistis, I think, right J? 😀

(soon it'll be mandatory)

which school starts today? wow that's friggin early...NYUCD starts late August

Tufts orientation is late august..........and school doesn't start until sept.

Do you know when first year is completed at tufts?? I think its July, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for the post Perfect. I haven't really been writing much on any threads lately, but I've been reading the dentistry sections for several months now. I'll be applying to IU next cycle, so I'm very interested in your experiences. Your recent posts have given me some extra motivation lately...thanks. Hope you do awesome and please keep posting.

Yeah, i'll give it to bill, he was first. But what the heck wtih this Ben guy, crampin my style! 😀

alrighty then guys,

here is what the second day was like.
started the second day of orientation at 8 am and ended at 5 pm.
-8-10 we spent hearing about the army/navy scholarship etc.
-10-11.30 was free time so that we could go get our books (needed ones), ID cards, take pics for the school directory (includes our add and phone # etc) which could be accessed by other IU students in case they wanna stalk someone (LOL).
-11.30-1.30 lunch (provided by ADA) with our faculty advisors (we all had diff ones)

and then this:
1.30-5 pm and overview of the PBL in dept

basically, i am a tired bored guy right now. however, i rather be bored than how i would feel starting tomorrow (3rd day). they'll have us in 2 classes and then have a mock board exam scheduled from 2-5(that should be fun huh? failing things already  ) starting Mon, we'll be fully 1st yr students with gross anatomy labs and some other things.

that was the orientation for us.although we'll burried in gross anat lab i still feel somewhat excitted to finally START the real thing.

Gavin: thank you and i agree. LOL btw, not the whole orientation was bad. we got to stare and look at all the very hot/cute girls in our class and not worry about missing something. seriously, if i were a bachelor, i'd definitely be in a lot of trouble. LOL

mochafreak: i wish you the best of luck buddy. IUSD is a great school and full of some great traditions and reputation. let me know if i can be of any help.

Ahmed,

Congrats on finally starting school. Im very happy for you.

yeah, Perfect! What a huge thrill! I know i'll be keeping the kleenex handy on my first day. The white coat ceremony alone is gonna reduce me to a snot bucket. 😛 CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Gongrats on starting school guys... sounds like fun 😉

Oh and about the bf/gf avatar thing...thanks a ton.... I've been getting slamed about that one everyday... I'll stick w/ LA thank you....

ty shawn, toothpixie, and zurik.

toothpixie, i totally forgot about the white coat ceremony. damn they have us do that on July 17. man i thought i was done with emotions. lol

question for Gavin or other current dental students.

we were told to buy heavy duty aprons for the anatomy lab because they said its gonna get very splashy and nasty in there. i am sorry, but i just took anatomy lab (with cadavors) as a pre req and there were no splashes or anything in that nature. every now and then, i got some spots on my lab coat but that was it.

do you think they are just making it sound that bad or is dental school anatomy any diff than under grad? besides, those plastic aprons they are talking about look really ugly. lol

Thanks Perfect, I think I'll be asking you some questions in the "under 3.0" thread soon. I haven't officially introduced myself to the under 3.0 club yet...but thanks to my old engineering GPA, I will be soon.

Well, we didn't do any dissection in our anatomy lab, everything was prosected for us. The one exception was out 3 weeks of head and neck, which we did complete dissection in. But that didn't get to messy. I'd just wear scrubs if I were you. Just my thoughts.

Does your paps work at Tufts???....I saw a Dr. Gary Rogoff in the faculty directory.

Its not paps, possibly some long lost relative? If it was paps i probably would be going there instead of Nova. 😀

oh man they gave us a 3 hrs mock board exam (released 1996) to give us an idea of the boards and see how much knowledge we don't have. lol

that exam was straight out depressing. the anatomy/physiology section was just all Greek to all of us. the biochem/microbio wasn't all bad. i feel bad for those who are taking it soon. lol

Why would they give you that without taking one class?? I havent taken bchem and microbin 4 years, physio in 3 years. I'd bomb that with flying colors.

Probably to humble all those who think they are hot stuff and prove that everybody is on the same level.

Thats exactly what i was thinking. I'm sure many entering dental students have large egos that need to be put into perspective.

Most decent schools give a mock exam the first week to show you the content you'll be learning as well as the depth needed for the Boards. This helps to illustrate that dental courses go much more in depth than is necessary for the Boards.

I doubt it is to humble anybody--and not everybody is on the same level. That's one of the beautiful lessons in dental school. There are some amazingly smart and talented people who will be far ahead of other people.

all i can say about it is that it was unlike anything i have ever seen. i would hate to see/share my results. LOL

oooook

the fun has officially begun for my class now. we have like 5 chapters of 2 diff anatomy books to read for Tue and be ready to dissect a never before touched cadavor. thats only one of the classes we are taking in summer.

I bet my buddy Spencer (in your class) got a 90 allready, kid's super smart... even if he is a meat head. Tell us about the make up of your class, if you would.
