First Interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
pardon my ignorance, but what's the difference between a J1 and H1B? I also hear a "J2" a few times in the past.

renovar...where r u from? r u canadian?

I'm still in limbo with a couple of programs and do not want to book my January flights until I have all the schools to decide where to go and when.

Any idea why I'd get MGH and BW, but not hear from BID?

Also nothing from Yale.

Got interviews from all the other places I applied.

I got my Step II this week and will send those results along to see if that helps. Proves Step I was not a fluke. To me too, Ha!!!

i'm tired of people using this thread to gloat and exude their haughty airs.

And still I can appreciate swiss and cabernet.

In my place,

Man, interviews at mgh but rejected from penn and stanford? there IS randomness in this process. this sucks.

you see, i was taught all along that if you work hard, you will reach your goal. it sucks to know now how much luck/randomness actually plays into one's life.

gosh, i learned about that misconception when i was like 12 years old.

Anyone hear from UCSD - interview or rejection????

You Vandy guys, are you hearing via eras/email or snail mail?

Heard from Vandy via regular e-mail only; not eras or snail mail. Made me wonder if it was any less "official."

Heard from Bayview via regular e-mail as well. It's strange that I don't recall seeing anybody else post Bayview here because they stated in their e-mail that they were starting their interviews Nov 24th. My e-mail also included a personal comment about my personal statement.

ckent,

i also received bayview with a personalized comment...i was pretty impressed that they actually go through the trouble. I don't actually know much about the program - what have you heard? how close a relationship with hopkins do they have?

thanks!

Haven't heard too much about it. I met a fellow who trained at Sinai (Hopkins) who thought that the training at Bayview was superior because they have service patients versus mostly private at Sinai. A friend who graduated from Hopkins med told me that it would be a nice place to do your prelim year since they see a lot of bread and butter conditions, but few zebras so she didn't think that it was so great for residency. The residents here at Maryland tell me that Bayview does alright when it comes to fellowship placement, particularly for a community program. We will see. I will probably call tomorrow to schedule.

assuming one gets interviews at cedars sinai and ucla harbor, which would you rank higher on your matchlist and WHY?

I guess since a majority of ppl here have step1 >240, no one cares about these non nationally acclaimed programs....

If someone would like to comment, I'd also like to add this question - what is the general step1 cutoff for interview for these two programs? Thanks.

I have an interview with Cedar Sinai, my board score is "barely" above average, certainly <<<<<240. Still waiting on Harbor.....However, my grades are decent and I have research exp. + 1 publication etc...

hey vision, if you end up interviewing at both, which would you rank higher and why?

i think harbor-ucla would probably get the nod over cedars.
this is what i've heard about these programs.

harbor-ucla: great clinical training, lots of resident autonomy, busy county hospital, majority of residents (greater than 90%) go on to do fellowships

cedars-sinai: less resident autonomy, private attendings, cushy program, hospital to the movie-stars, strong fellowships at cedars.

both sound like great programs, i probably would choose harbor. but i'm not sure with the news that harbor may be shutting down?

if cedars have stronger fellowships, why not do residency at cedars to improve chances to doing fellowship at cedars?

Cedars don't have all the fellowships... But I do know they have a very strong Cards fellowship, and if that is the way you wanna go.... As far a Harbor, I heard lots of bad stuff about it such as work load, how unhappy residents are etc... will check it out both places and see how you fit in

Class Switch........

Where did you end up deciding to interview? Your last list was not complete. This is way more of a drudge job than I anticipated. I hate turning down good programs, but just can't make myself spend the money on all of them. Seems like all these top programs have bad reputations as far as quality of life. I hope a year from now I don't have the thought, "What was I thinking???"! Most of my interviews are in January in the NE. I hope the weather cooperates. Duke in December, but I really have little interest in going there.

At this point I have no program that I really want to be part of. I hope something hits me right in the coming months.

Majority greater than 240? I doubt that.

Also - I think you are going to be most unhappy if the only thing you look for in residency is name-value.

Step I number is important, but honestly anyting above average should get you an interview most places as long as you have the complete package - ie honored your IM rotation, strong letters, high class rank, etc.

I'm not looking for name-value. I was asking questions regarding fellowship placement, not names.

I've noticed most people posting here have >235. That's just my observation, or at least the people who've been willing to expose their scores on this thread.

hey vision, what does "barely" above average mean, please?

Average = 215, and barely above means barely above but certainly <<<<<<<240

From HopToad:

>At this point I have no program that I really want to be part of. I hope something hits me right in the coming months.

My interviews are (all categorical-only except for my home institution): Dartmouth, UPenn, Yale, WashU, Baylor, U of Washington, Stanford, UCSF, Brigham, MGH. I've also got U of Chicago and Northwestern scheduled but am leaning towards bailing on at least one of them. I already bailed on Brown and U of Colorado. I'm tempted to bail on U of Washington but don't know if Orbitz will give me a refund. I had been planning to bail on Duke if they were to give me an interview spot, but they made it easy and rejected me instead. 😛

HopToad, what's eating you, bud(ette)?

There should be an interview spot opening up at Columbia, Yale, and UNC Chapel Hill because I just cancelled these 3 today,

Thanks vision. Isnt 217 the average? Good to know that score can get me a cedars interview. I have yet to take step1 actually, and just learning here. Thanks a bunch.

I called UCSF today to ask my status for the 1st time and they told me that they had sent an interview offer, but my email was wrong. Thanks for the advice to those that said to give them a call.

Class,

I don't know what's eating me, but I just don't have much enthusiasm for this process. Seems like after all the goals I have reached I should be more in control of my destiny. I hate wasting all the time and money on these interviews as a safety net. I am not at all confident in landing the spot of my choice, so feel I have to play the game and hope for the best.

Thanks for posting your choices. I am not going to Cleveland Clinic, Yale, Michigan, NYU, Mt. Sinai, and Beth Israel. I will decide about Columbia down the road. I hope I am not shooting myself in the foot.

Hop Toad - That's just about all any of us can expect out of this process. This system, though not ideal, ensures the greatest outcome for the greatest number. Don't lose hope- I'm sure you'll get your top 1 or 2 choices. And what's with dropping all those other programs? Hopefully you have a good backup plan that includes your top few choices?

Scarlet,

I applied to 15 programs and received invitations to interveiw at all of them. There is just not enough time and money to go to all of them. I cut some of the programs based on location and others on reputation. I'll be visiting 9 programs. My advisors are telling me I'll be fine. Time will tell.

🙂

Got an invite from Yale yesterday - has anybody interviewed there yet - any thoughts?

ej

the randomness continues......received an invite to Beth Isreal Deaconess today. Looks like a bunch on people must have cancelled interviews there.

Any thoughts on the program?
