First Interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Was talking to a derm guy the other day. He just casually said that he had to get going and go review more residency applications. Certainly led you to believe that they can not possibly look at all of them simultaneously. Alphabet might be how it's done, who knows. Maybe they sort them by AOA or step I and look at them that way. I heard the day after the first BW was announced here and I am down the alphabet quite a ways.

I have yet to hear from Sinai and some people said they knew someone that heard long before the dean's letter came out. I rejected them as a med school. Maybe they don't like that.

I think there are so many variables that you can make yourself crazy wondering what kind of rhyme or reason goes into the selection process.

has anyone NOT heard from vandy or emory yet that thought they would? it's driving me nuts(C:

hey hop toad, congrats on the interviews you already have. i am still waiting to hear from a lot of places including Cornell and Duke...I guess no news is good news considering the barrage of rejections lately.

btw, do you go to a SUNY by any chance (ie SUNY Stony Brook)?

i'm pretty sure it's by school or region (they way they evaluate candidates for interviews). east vs west coast bias definitely exists, and an east coast school will have a preference for east coast-based candidates since they will have a higher likelihood of staying on the east coast.

also, how many of you out there actually wrote personal statements that were personalized to particular programs? (eg writing one or two paragraphs on why program X would be best for me, considering my interests, research experiences). I think I should have invested some time to do this, esp for the bigger programs.

stay cool, hang in there folks!

I have not heard from either place yet by Thursday 11/6 at 3:45 pm.

I'm also still waiting on Vandy and Emory, not to mention Duke, and UVa. I have classmates who were AOA (at my mid-tier med school) who have interviews lined up at each of these programs already.

Only got invites to Chapel Hill, Wake Forest and UAB, as far as my Southeast programs.

We could rack our brains all interview season long about how they determine interviewees. Probably some use an algorithm as has been postulated; some may use alphabetical order; others use a cut-off Step 1 score. But at this point in the game it's out of our hands anyway.

Finally got Wash U today. I'm guessing that they put me in their second tier. I've heard from one of their students that their IM program is particularly non-competive to match into given their high reputation.

Ckent,
Also got WashU today by email. I was fearing it was going to be rejection, but it wasn't....Que alivio!

-S.
🙂

first rejection today - ucsf. it was a long shot to begin with.

still waiting on vanderbilt. they've been giving out interviews for weeks and it's making me nervous. eek.

Does anyone know whether U Chicago and Northwestern send out rejection notices? A friend told me he never heard back from UC a couple years back when he applied but that his application may not have been complete owing to the number of LORs he turned in. At this point I'd like to know if they have no intention of offering an interview...

Jlandau

Thanks and no, I'm not a SUNY student. Much father south.

Some of the programs I heard from so quickly that the only thing they had for me was the Step I score and the fact that I was AOA. No transcript, etc.

I did also have one letter in from a nationally know doctor in very early.

Wash U is really big on numbers. I did not initially apply there for med school and they sent me a solicitation letter after MCAT's came out. Very annoying as I bothered to interview there and only got wait listed.

Who knows? Still have not heard from several of my top choices. I want to make flight plans and can't. This is a very frustrating time.

Me too! They offered nothing later than December 19th. No January dates. I'm afraid I will have to decline.

UC F#@KING SF today...

and I wont be going... so I wish the lucky bastard who takes my place good luck and make good use of this opportunity.

At least you were aiming for ucsf. I'm only a 2nd year, and ucsf is already out of the question for me.

The worst thing is actually being excited after getting an interview and then finding out that they wont give me the visa I need.

and the lady is rude to boot, how's that for a way of ruining a potentially happy afternoon? 🙁

The worst is probably when one is applying to ucsf med as a californian resident who missed admissions by 1-2 spots from the waiting list, and didnt get in anywhere else. I think that would've ruined one potentially happy....life?

But yeah sorry Renovar. Though, you have many other f-a-b-o-l-o-u-s (a rap thing) places to be interviewing at.

Now if those fabulous places would tell me soon... 🙂

But honestly though, I can't complain. Knowing full well that I will graduate from medical school next year and become a good doctor and I'll match (sic) and be trained at a solid program that will open doors for fellowships if I want it. People on this board get carried away with fussing about any number of ivy league residency and the nitty-bitty, but everyone needs to look at the big picture.

ivy league is crap. who cares about yale and brown and dartmouth? (and princeton). they suck at IM.

no offense profunda, but you have no idea what you are talking about.

You are right about Princeton IM though. It does suck. Especially since the program lacks residents, funding, an affiliated medical school and a hospital to train in.

I have to agree with exjersey, I've heard nothing but good things about the IM program at Brown. From both students/interviewees and advisors. So classifying it as "crap", might be a bit harsh.

Not as many positive things about Yale...but never heard "crap".

profunda was just trying to give renovar some affirmation for his statement. i don't think profunda was serious about the crap comment (otherwise Princeton's name would not be in that post).

hey renovar,

that sucks about the visa issue....i know that must be annoying...but congrat either way, its amazing you got a ucsf interview...and i'm sure you will end up at an amzing place....

thewonderer,

exactly what i was trying to do.

Has anyone heard from Colorado yet? Their website says the Dean's letter is needed for screening, so I'm guessing they're just one of the slower ones...

Hey Renovar- Would you mind telling us what kind of numbers are needed to snag an interview at UCSF. What med school are you from- state or private? Top 25? Just curious. From what I understand they only interview top candidates from top Ca med schools and other top private/ivy schools. They rejected my dumb state med school ass. Thanks. Crypt

I was granted a UCSF interview, also. Step I 245. Top-10 East Coast School. No AOA. Honors in 3rd year Medicine. I have a friend who is a 2nd year resident at UCSF and he tells me that virtually all residents achieved honors in their 3rd year medicine rotation. Honors in 4th year apparently doesn't matter much because of grade inflation. Hope this helps.

To all those frustrated about the UCSF rejections, I
have unfortunately joined the club. I got my rejection
e-mail a few days ago and was both disappointed and a bit
shocked.

I provide my numbers, etc. because I think it will make some of you feel a bit better that there are people out there with great stats and UCSF still sh-ts on us.

Top 20-30 med school (not in california)
Step 1: 252
3rd year grades: 5/6 honors (including medicine)
AOA (my school does not rank but my dean tells me that I am top 3 applicant in my class and possibly #1 IM applicant)
Apparently, very stellar LORS.
Good research including presenatations and pubs
No skeletons in the closet!
I thought that I did everything I possibly could to be the most competitive applicant, yet it wasn't quite good enough for SF.

My latest theory is that you must either be:
a) strong applicant from top 15 school OR
b) did an externship there

This is my only reject thus far (knock on wood) and even though they were not even my top 1 or 2, I think I took a bit of an ego bruising. Probably good for me.

Good luck to everyone else.

I think I have posted it somewhere on this forum. BUt they are probably not as outstanding as some of the numbers you see in this thread. But anyways, top 15 south med school, 241 step 1, no AOA but I would guess at least above average from my school ("excellent" on dean's letter), good letters (I would damn hope this is the case) and pretty much some of everything, and LOTS of luck. But it's a moot point now... 🙁

Just to make you guys feel better, I was rejected at some of the places that you guys probably get interviews at (BW, stanford), so to me it's nothing more than a lame game of shooting in the dark and hope to score a hit somewhere.

Thought I'd post my stats for any D.O. students interested. I applied to probably 3x the amount of programs I should have. However, I really did not have a good feel as to how much "allopathic bias" was out there.

Class Ranks -- probably at bottom 40%
USMLE Step #1 -- 228
USMLE Step #2 -- 235
Comlex Step #1 -- 94%
Honored all but family practice and psychiatry during my 3rd year
Some research
Strong Letters
Strong Dean's letter

Interviews granted: Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, Dartmouth, Rush Presbytarian, University of Iowa, University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin, Akron City - Summa Health, Brown, Georgetown, Loyola University, Ohio State, University of Arizona, University of California Davis, University of Connecticut, Johns Hopkins/ Sinai Hospital, Loma Linda, Metrohealth, UMDMJ-Robert Wood Johnson, University of Cincinnati, University of Kansas Medical Center, University of Missouri Columbia, University of Southern California, Akron General, Allegheny General, Norwalk Hospital, UCSF-Fresno

Rejections: University of North Carolina, University of California San Francisco (Hey, they might have misplaced me in the yes box), Albert Einstein, Montefiore

Just wanted to bounce this off others who know the waters...

I still haven't heard anything from Brigham, MGH, Penn, Yale, NYU, or Columbia. I was advised by my PD that I only need apply to a handful of programs. I have interviews at :
Cornell
Einstein
Sinai
Colorado
+ other smaller.

Stats: USNews top 30 state school in the west. AOA. "Outstanding" in MSPE. 250 step 1, 249 step 2. Some research plus 1 publication. LOR from good faculty who I really think wrote good things. Won award for performance in junior med clerkship. Good extracurriculars.

Do you guys think I'm done? I really wanted NYU and Yale, plus wanted a chance at Penn. MGH and BW were reaches, but ...

You sound like you have done everything you could do. I would just relax and have confidence realizing that for all intensive purposes it is still early in this process. By no means "done".

Just curious did you submit your application late?

R Jeffrey -

I think it's too early to say you are done. I have not heard from most of the schools that you have not heard from and we have similar stats.

I did hear from BW & NYU. Have not heard from Sinai, maybe it's because I declined them for med school and said I did not want to live in NYC as a reason. Don't think I can go to NYU for an interview because they did not off any January dates. Why?

No one has posted that they have heard from Yale, Penn, MGH, JH, or Columbia. I'm hoping this is a good sign.

Good luck.

Nah man, chill out for now. Apparently talking to some classmates in my class doing medicine today, and they really haven't heard much from the places mentioned above. Some wont let us know until a bit later like in late November.

As previously mentioned, got my NYU today.

Mock interviewed with my advisor today, first interview at Emory in less than 2 weeks!

10och,

Thanks for the info on Colorado; keeping my fingers crossed...

Thanks for responding.

At least when med schools replies were coming in, they were all by snail mail which only came once a day. How many times can email be checked in 24 hours?

My application was submitted into eras 10/6.

I was talking to my school's program secretary. She said that all applicant's from the same school are evaluated by the same group of faculty so that they can get a feel for how a school evaluates/writes for their studetns. I know that I'm the only one from my school who is applying to the bigger programs in the east--maybe they've forgotten me...

From Johns Hopkins web site......

All applicants will be reviewed the week of November 3. All applicants will be notified via e-mail the week of November 10.

It's time!!!

I noticed UVA started interviewing this week. I'm still waiting to hear from them. Anybody have interviews scheduled with them? I know one student from my mid-tier med school who received a UVA invitation about 2 weeks ago.

Johns Hopkins invite just showed up on the ERAS message site.

🙂

Got Hopkins today.

Mick,
I don't know what the deal is with UVa? After reading your post I went to their website and you are indeed correct, the first interview was yesterday. They make mention of only reviewing complete applications, but according to their definition of complete, it would seem mine is. Strange.

congrats to all on getting interviews!

If any of you have received interviews for the following programs, would you be so kind as to post the possible dates that were offered. I would greatly appreciate it, i'm trying to plan my schedule for the upcoming month.

Yale
U Chicago
Hopkins
MGH
BI Deaconess
Brigham + Women's
U Michigan
Cornell
Columbia
NYU
Sinai
UPENN
Duke

thanks a lot.

got Hopkins today

Got an invite from Wash U today. Does anybody know anything about the quality of the teaching that takes place there? I'm also curious about whether it's one of those malignant programs.
