Never mind that last post. MGH invite was on ERAS. I did not check because I did not think it would come in the evening.

Now for the nightmare of getting flights to all these places in so many different cities.

I bet most of us, including myself, would love to share the terror of your nightmares...Congradulations by the way. You really must have done it "the old fashion way"...

So, is everyone starting to seriously narrow their interview schedules down yet? I applied by location so I'm thinking about limiting my interviews to 3 cities that are flying distance and a couple programs within driving range.

My interviews are at 2nd tier programs so I'd like to interview at like 8 programs and rank like 5 of them. Sound reasonable?

When it comes down to it, I just can't imagine the quality of training between places like Rush and Montefiore being all that different. Nor can I imagine being swept away by a program like Georgetown.

My gut feeling is that location will win out in the end. While nobody will recognize a name like California Pacific Medical, does it matter? The program offers specialty training and is located in the most beautiful city in America... 😀

Guys, I have a question. How does doing an externship really help? I mean, what if you do it at a top residency program and it is so demanding that you start showing your weaknesses, and may not match up to what they want. At least if you just submit your app with embellishment, you can still feign you are the bomb. I just want to know why everyone recommends doing the externship that will probably show the PD your weaknesses.

Thanks, Bartholomew. My strengths don't necessarily translate well to Road Warrior and I really do dread all the travel, costs and just the logistics of the whole thing. Packing - another nightmare! What to wear? What will the weather be like? I'm in the South. I don't even know if I can find my gloves!

I go to Cornell in early January. Have not heard from Columbia, so don't know when I can schedule that program. NYU did not offer any January dates. Does no one else but me think that's strange? Then it's off to Boston, but only heard from 2 of the 3 I want there. Then somehow fit Baltimore in. They want 5 dates!!!!! How can you tie up 5 dates when you are trying to schedule other programs? MGH only has 7 dates total.

I can't be the only one that thinks this is a nightmare to pull off.

Doing Wash U & Emory in November, then Mich. and Duke in December. Shooting for 10 interviews. None of the 1st are my top choices, so they will be good practice. Have heard from 11 of the 15 programs I applied to.

If your numbers speak loudly on your behalf then don't concern yourself too much with out rotations. But if you have a particular program in mind, or are marginally competitive at a desired program, by all means rotate there.

My advisor says there is no one thing that an applicant can do to stand out more than to rotate at a program.

That said, arranging out rotations is time consuming and can be quite costly. OHSU for instance, has an application process that begins a YEAR in advance. (Albeit, I've heard they're really good about housing, insurance etc if they offer you a spot).

Insurance policies between institutions is highly variable and can be a major pain in the arse.

For me, cost was sadly the prohibitive factor. 🙁

As for performance, your third year clerkships are the best barometer of whether showing your face would be a good idea or not. If your clinical presence isn't all too hot, you may want to focus on crushing step 2 before submitting your application.

As a marginal candidate, I'm almost positive I could have bumped myself into a first tier program if I did an out rotation. And I would be full of regret for not having done so if money was never an issue....

I can speak from experience RE: out rotations as beneficial.

I spoke to a confidante who was present in the PD's office at a large university-based program in the southeast where I recently rotated. There was a discussion of my performance as a visiting student, and, according to my "source", the PD and at least 1 chief resident were impressed with my performance during my rotation at that institution.

I can say that going somewhere you are sincerely interested in and shining there is, in a way, better than a "job interview" --- it really functions as a "temporary hire" (of course, with an unrestricted option to terminate) during which time one can truly make a name for one's self. I can not testify if this holds at the most elite of programs, but it seemed to play out nicely for me. For what it's worth--

Congrats on your interviews viva la bam, particularly MGH and BID. Interesting that you were rejected from UCSF and Stanford, but invited to Harvard teaching hospitals- just goes to show the west coast bias. Regarding your waiting list, I was invited to Duke about two to three weeks after I submitted (September). Best of luck to you. Tom

I am thinking that I have scheduled a couple that I should not have. I really don't want to go to more than ten. I HATE this process. Not getting program invites until a month later than the early ones makes scheduling crazy. None are in my geographic region.

Man, interviews at mgh but rejected from penn and stanford? there IS randomness in this process. this sucks.

you see, i was taught all along that if you work hard, you will reach your goal. it sucks to know now how much luck/randomness actually plays into one's life.

Ditto for me. Another invite, another place where I can't go because of visa problems.

As for UCSF, the friggin lady that I talked to the phone INSISTED that the department only do J1's and no H1B's and no exceptions and how their esteemed insitution have so many qualified applicants that H1B's are just too paperwork intensive that they dont really want to bother with it, and she basically proceeded to ground me to a pulp over the phone. I was absolutely fuming when I hang up... Oh well... I guess I will get over that sometime.
