Hi guys! I am going to a PhD program this Fall, but for the past two years I have been working at a major university's psychiatry department. I just found out that I am going to be published on a paper! The paper is coming out in the Society for Neuroscience journal. I am the 3rd author listed. I was wondering how impacting this paper will be for my future clinical psych career. For example, will I be able to list it on my CV when applying for internships and eventually post-docs? Basically...I'm just not quite sure how excited to be.

The Journal of Neuroscience is an excellent neuroscience journal. Publishing in that- even as a middle author- is a good way to start off grad school.

For example, will I be able to list it on my CV when applying for internships and eventually post-docs? Basically...I'm just not quite sure how excited to be.

Not just for internships and post-docs, but agencies that give fellowships during grad school also like to see a publication record.

Is this an actual manuscript that is being published in Journal or Neuroscience, or a paper that was submitted for presentation at the Society for Neuroscience meeting? I ask, as the deadline for submissions was this week. The former is a much bigger deal than the latter, but regardless, you will be able to list on your CV from this point on. If an actual manuscript in journal, then it would go under Peer-reviewed Articles (or something like that). If a presentation of the paper at SFN, then would go under Conference Presentations (or something like that).

Ah cool, very good to know, thanks a lot guys! My excitedness/happiness level just maxed out haha. Although, I can't help thinking that it would have been even nicer to get this publication finished before I applied to schools... but now i'm just being greedy 😀

It's a very good feeling knowing that this will be with me basically my entire academic career. In a way...this paper is the most impacting project I have ever worked on in my entire life (other than getting a grad school acceptance). Hopefully i'll be able to add a few more by the time I graduate..but it's great having a jump start! I will have to celebrate tonight!

You're also now above the modal number of publications for clinical internship applicants 😉

Congrats! I would definitely put it on the CV. However, I would note in parenthesis if it is "in press" or "in review" until it actually released. This usually goes either after the authors or the date.
