Instead of studying for finals, I decided to gain motivation by looking over the year and compiling the total number of exams, quizzes, presentations, and practicals that occurred. When it's May 19th this is what we went through during our first 33 week academic year (august-may 19th):

46 exams, 31 quizzes, 14 presentations, and 8 waxing practicals 😱

Of course, there were daily assignments and a few papers, but these numbers represent the bulk of the first year program at my school.

Unfortunately upon tabulating these numbers, I found that my motivation only decreased. :scared:

Basically, the point of this post is for everyone to realize the accomplishment surviving each year of dental school really is. GOOO TEAM😀

Only 8 practicals? You had it easy, we had 17!

Well good for you. Our first year is dedicated to basic sciences so we can take part 1 during the summer. If yours is the same, then that is amazing.

You only had 8 waxing practicals. We already went thru all different classes of restoration (including Class II, III composites and the horrible MODL+ amalgam prep and restoration). Though unfortunately no quizzes.

Though unfortunately no quizzes. I think we had 3 waxing practicals (2 on typodont, 1 on articulator), 2 FVCs, 2 Class II amalgams, 1 Class III composite, 1 7/8 crown prep and temp and 1 gold polish. Though its nice that you guys get the didactic portion out of the way to study efficiently for boards.

Our final this year for operative lab was #2 O amalgam, #3 MOB amalgam, #4 MOD composite, #5 class III MD composite, #6 MLIF composite in 2 1/2 hours to prep it, get it marked, and then fill it.

This seems a little ridiculous for first year hey?

I definitely wont be able to accomplish that, even though I am in third year.

I thought this would be tough too but then I realized that on typodont teeth you don't really need anything but adhesive and a curing light. Plus this is a manikin so you don't need to deal with patient issues or positioning or saliva/tongue. Also, no faculty stop checks. In clinic each one of these could take an entire 3 hour appointment just in waiting for faculty and dealing with patient issues.
