I'm not talking about free money or cars (although that would be cool). I'm talking about shadowing physicians more easily, having better research oppurtunities, more clinically relevant volunteer opportunities...etc...

Are these and other things like them easier to do once you are in medical school?

The reason I ask is because it was pretty difficult to get good "patient-based" experiences before medical school. I just wanted to know the general consensus about these types of things and if it is "easier" per se for a medical student. Thanks!

Doors are basically wide-open to you as long as you have a white coat. If you aren't a jerk and people have time, they'll often teach you how to do something so you can participate as well.

I know I had classmates intubating by the end of first year.

Will have to work on this....😎

Yes to all the above and stop filling allo with these questions. This is a premed question.

How is this a premed question? The OP is looking for answers from people with experience being a medical student.

I understand what he is looking for and it seems this would be a reasonable place to find it.

However, he is asking a question any current medical student would not ask. The allo forum is for medical students sharing with other medical students.

His question is equivalent to a premed asking "Pros/cons a pass/fail school" or anything about picking medical schools. We have already done that and it doesn't pertain to us anymore.

Only someone who is pre-starting medical school would ask a question like this, so it should go to pre-allo where it would also benefit other premeds who have questions like it. There are many medical students/residents/attendings who browse pre-allo (myself included) who will give him/her great answers.

And, just before people judge me as a self-absorbed prick, I personally want premeds to stay out of allo because it makes the quality of threads go WAY down. If we let premeds post whatever they want in here the subforum will be full of crap like "Should I go to this school or an identical one in every way to it - I want medical student thoughts!".

P.S. is your username from the camp site in the smokies?

This. Medical students go to preallo if they want to answer preallo questions. There are lots of us over there.

Thanks for the answers everyone! I will do my best to keep material out of allo that shouldn't be here.

Exactly. Medical students should be able to answer my question better than pre-meds. I suspect most med students aren't perusing the pre-med forums anymore.

Medical students will be able to answer this better but you totally ignored my point.

There are many medical students in preallo. Click on almost any thread. You'll see medical students posting in it.

Edit: you ninja edited. 😉

True. So now you know how I really feel about your post 😉

BTW, plenty of threads that are in allo could be in pre-allo. Just look at the first page!

I know, when I was a premed I felt the same way about allo. I wanted all of these medical students to chime in on the plethora of questions I had. Pre-allo is full of trolls and premeds who don't know what they're talking about, I get it.

Some threads in pre-allo could be posted in allo (saw a thread about dogs in medical school.) Some of the threads in allo could be posted in pre-allo (books to read before M1 starts).

We have to draw the line somewhere, sorry if your specific thread pushed me off the deep end.

I can understand. I'll wait till I'm "full-fledged" before blowing the forum up so much 🙂
