Hey everybody!

Any fellow GEP 2010 students out there have any pointers as to where I can find a sweet deal on a flight to Edinburgh?

Thanks!

Aer Lingus and Icelandic Air are usually pretty cheap to get over to that part of the world. I usually prefer flying into Heathrow via BA and then taking a domestic flight or train up to Glasgow. Plus I am racking up miles for a free flight! 😉

I got a good deal through one of those travel websites. I cannot remember the name, nor find their e-mail (though I do have the e-mail sent from the airline company with my ticketing information). Search all of the flight websites, even the less known ones such as cheapoflights.com.

Not sure where exactly I bought my ticket (My mom bought it for me using her frequent flyer miles) but I do know I'm flying into Paris. I know I read somewhere it's best not to fly into Ireland--that it's best to get into the UK by other means. Aer Lingus had by far the best prices and I think there were some flying into Amsterdam then to Edinburgh. Good luck!

I fly over in less than 1 month!! 😱

You can't fly into Ireland if you have a student VISA. The reason is you will be issued a visa in Ireland (like a tourist VISA or a connection flight VISA whatever one they issue). Ireland and the UK have an agreement where you do not need a VISA to get into the UK from Ireland. Therefore, if you fly in this way, you will not get your tier 4 VISA stamped, which is required to activate it or something like that.

Erm...you CAN fly into Ireland (note Ireland, NOT N. Ireland which IS part of the UK), but they might make a fuss about your UK Visa. (If it is the cheapest flight, I would say go for it). When you get to Ireland, they will stamp you and take your picture (just make sure you have ALL your stuff...acceptance letters etc), and then you go find a customs person when you get to the UK. It isn't the best route, but if it's cheapest, do it. Just let them know you need your visa checked. Amsterdam is another big hub for UK students, just be prepared to be heavily questioned and searched.

I used studentuniverse.com. It does require you to be a current student (and/or under 26 or something??). I was taking classes at a community college, so when they checked to verify my status as a student, all the proof was there.

Charters direct to Edinburgh or Glasgow are the cheapest and fastest, but most only fly once a week, so if they don't fit your schedule you're out of luck. Round trip, direct flight Halifax - Edinburgh takes about 8 hours and ran me around $600 total... I think that was through either Flyglobespan or Thomas Cook.

I prefer flying a major airline as you get more room on the big 747 / 767's than you do on the smaller charter planes; I'm 6'2 and an 8 hour flight on one of those little Airbus charter planes just about kills me. Plus, you get in flight movies, free drink service, and seat backs which have a USB and power outlets so your laptop doesn't die halfway across, which makes the flight go much faster.

My usual route is Halifax - Heathrow - Edinburgh with Air Canada; the school tells new students to avoid Heathrow but in all honesty it isn't bad at all. As long as you pay attention to the signs and allow yourself 90 minutes between you're connection, you'll be fine. Total time travelling is 11-12 hours including waiting for your connection. If you book a few months in advance you can get prices that are nearly as good as a charter price - my last round trip ticket was $750 with taxes and fees.
