What school was this for? I got an interview invite in early February but they had said it was for the few remaining seats and the waitlist too.
 
To the people asking about FSU, this is my personal experience with them. I was complete mid december, invited for interview at the beginning of January, interviewed the first week of feb, and got accepted a week and a day after my interview date.
To UF grad, I just got an interview for temple, which I believe is for a waitlist too. Was yours from Temple too?

As far as UM and USF interviews, been complete since October and have heard nothing from them. I am puzzled by this!!!

i haven't heard anything from UF and USF since being complete in late-sept 🙁

I wish I had better news than this, but I just received a rejection letter (without an interview) from UF. I was complete since October, have 29 MCAT and 3.75 gpa (since I know everyone likes to gauge themselves with others). I called them last week and they anticipated sending their rejections either this week or next week, so it was expected. Good luck to the rest of you this week!

Whoops, I guess when I edited it, I cut it out. Yeah, it is an interview for Temple Med. I really don't have the cash to go up there right now, but I am really stoked that I got an invitation regardless. I actually passed by the school when I was in Philadelphia for a Drexel interview last november though.
 
i interviewed at temple in december,and was later accepted. I love the school, and the city life. its a great opportunity for clinical experience, and if you're not into research, you should definitely consider it! As for me, the only drawback is the 50K+ tuition per year. However, temple is known for moving through their waitlist relatively fast especially because a lot of students pass on them due to their tuition. If you haven't gotten an acceptance yet (or dont like the acceptance you have), i would recommend going to the interview as you have a fairly high chance of getting into Temple. As for me, my heart is set on USF so i am hoping that i get the call from them sooner rather than later. Good luck to everybody. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions about Temple interview.

Rejected by UF....kinda forced that one out.

"I know that UF will be sending out rejections this week, my second question was whether I could send in updates or should I just wait until I receive a decision."

"You haven't received an email? Well a decision has been made for your application....and uh....you should probably wait until you receive it before deciding to send in updates"

"Oh.......ok, well thank you. Have a nice day."

Rejection 3 mins later in email.

In other news....I'm 95% sure UM class is full. Adcom is meeting this wednesday. proably gonna get on the waitlist.

they have spots open. majority of their interviewers have been put on hold.

Well, I'm not in school yet, so I don't know if my advice will be the best, but I will try to help. I am also a gator (Go Gators!!). I graduated from there in December. And I am also (sort of) Tampa bred... I grew up in St. Pete. I loved UF, and they have an amazing program, but I can just tell their medical school program is just not for me. Even just going through pre-med undergrad there, I felt the immense competitiveness among students. I can only imagine it gets worse in medical school. Also, UF is highly invested into research. That is where they get most of their money, and as a result, some professors care more about their research project then they do teaching their students. In contrast, USF cares about TEACHING first and foremost. This is what I love. I do like research, but I do not want to be a researcher, I want to be a physician that emphasizes patient care, which is why USF appeals to me. Also, all the students at USF get along (mostly) and help each other out, sharing notes, books, etc. That sense of teamwork is something I really want in a medical school. And I love Gainesville, but I think I need to get out of there for awhile! Great place to visit though!!

I know that's just your opinion- but you shouldn't make a judgement call on the motivations/intentions of a medical school's professors without being an actual student there. That would be the equivalent of me stating on these forums that Harvard's professors are all about research and are completely negligent when it comes to education (I would have no basis to make that call- even if I went to Harvard's undergrad). Although UF is a research institution, that doesn't automatically mean that researchers do not care about teaching students, or that they are somehow less qualified to do so than "real doctors" (which I can assure you are usually not the typical medical school professor (and many "real doctors" are involved in research too)). In either case I don't think you should be quick to assume that your premed environment will mirror the fratenity among the medical students. Time and time again I see a "Band of Brothers" mentality among med classmates- not the "you versus the world" gunner approach. There is no incentive to bring on uber-competitive/insecure kids, when there are so many nice ones to choose from🙂. The ADCOMS are very experienced in choosing the right folks to group together- they have a good eye for gunner moles. And the people involved are so genuine and down to earth- Robyn, Denise, Dr. Gessner and Dr. Kendall Campbell...I am honored to be a part of their family.
In the words of Dr. Ira Gessner "We prefer to choose someone you can have a beer with, not someone you can study with." Needless to say, when I heard this, I was sold! They were the only ones that made me feel at home. But hey, at the end you're picking a school. Another place you can sweat and toil for hours and hours on end, bent over books and drinking bad coffee. Nothing is going to change that. Go Gators! 👍

Oh, and BTW... I too was rejected at my alma mater... or at least I am assuming so since I still have not heard anything, and I was complete in Sept/Oct.

So there ya go, maybe that explains some of my opinion! 🙁

About UF: I was accepted in last year's cycle. I had the second to last interview date and I was still accepted in mid/late March. When Robyn says you are still being considered, she's being honest. They really don't fill up their seats until the last possible moment. No kidding. I thought it was almost pointless to interview so late in their cycle... and then they surprised me with love. 😍


But I know you like USF- and that's an awesome program. You'll do great where ever you finally choose. Good luck!!! :luck:

haha, I am glad i havent checked the mail yet! I still havent heard back from them. I would like to say i am suprised, but i am well aware that nothing is predictable in this application process.
 
Most professors want to do research... very few of them are truly passionate about teaching. University departments decide how much time a professor must dedicate to teaching by the amount of money the researcher brings in (how much of the professor's salary is paid by their grant). In fact, many schools (UF included) have a formula that calculates how much lab space (down to square feet) a researcher gets based on their funding.

So what happens to researchers who fail to get their grants funded (and this happens far more often than most realize). Well if they're tenured, they can't really be fired so... Their lab space is repossessed, the professor gets little more than a plaque outside of an office, their salary is drastically reduced and they are forced to dedicate most of their time to teaching.

Given the current state of funding, I don't really blame researchers for not wanting to teach. It is extremely time consuming and most of them would much rather be working on their grants/pubs.
 
Based on that review the Committee has determined that we can not offer further consideration to you for the class entering Fall 2008.

Congrats on the interview! UF is absolutely one of my top 2 choices, and I am really hoping to get an interview from them. I submitted late, so I'm worried I will miss out. Everybody seems to be hearing from them today. Would you mind sharing your stats so that I'll have something to compare to? You can PM me if you don't mind sharing. Again, congratulations, and I hope we might be classmates soon.
 
Oh, and in reply to your question...I remember receiving an email or something from them saying that anyone who gets an interview has an equal opportunity to get in, or something to that effect, and that late interviewees are not at any disadvantage.
 
Wow, I guess UF hands out rejections in waves. Was anyone rejected post-interview?

I know this conversation is over but there is just one thing I should mention also.

The other reason you can't judge the atmosphere around a med school based on an undergrad is because it is not all the same people in your undergrad that are going to your med school. At some schools there may be people from allover the country at most they look at people from all over the state. There are a lot of UF students at USF, maybe more then USF alum students at USF med. There are many student from Umiami and even a few from out of state who came to Fl. and a few who are in state residents that went to places like Northwestern or other top tier schools. How can you judge what they'd be like against what you typicaly see at an ugrad institution.

They basically give you two weeks to respond. If I respond to save my seat, do I still have until may 15th to decide between multiple acceptances? (even though the school starts on may 27th)
I ask this because I am mainly waiting to get the aid packages from schools that accepted me before I make a decision.
In case I decide to withdraw, how do you do it? Email?

I'm a Gator undergrad and I still haven't heard anything. I don't know what to make of this. I guess we'll see...
 
I was a Gator undergrad with reasonable stats (34S, 3.78 overall), and I just got an interview invite last week. I was pretty surprised as well, since the other FL schools contacted me for Nov/Dec interviews. But don't give up hope yet...

In January I went Tampa to visit/tour, wrote them a letter of intent, and had a 2nd year there write me a letter of reference. Was told that everything "looks good" and that I just need to be patient...whatever that means

Applicants who are interviewed later in the year generally are just as qualified as those interviewed on day 1. There's just not enough time to interview everyone up front. I was personally interviewed in March on either the last interview day or 2nd to last and ended up doing very well in my class. Heck I even got a radiation oncology residency position already outside of the match...

From what I remember from the interview, you can pay the deposit and accept within two weeks, but because they have an Early Start Program, you have to make a decision about whether to matriculate there by April 15 (instead of May 15). If you are accepted to FSU, and on a waitlist at UF, USF, or UM, then you can still accept a spot on April 15 at FSU, and if you get off the waitlist at the other schools, then you can choose that other school (although you may lose your deposit).

If you choose to withdraw, I was told that a simple e-mail was fine, addressed to the Admissions Committee.

Congrats on your residency position! 👍 Does this mean you'll have two residencies to choose from after the match? Or how does this work? If that's the case, I'm sure it's a VERY nice position to be in 😀
 
UF Interview invite today! It was nice to finally hear from them, although i chose to withdrawl my application instead of going to the interview. Hope it freed up a spot for one of you guys.

You have until April 15th to decide with multiple acceptances with FSU, if you really have a strong preference for one school, it is always better to let the others know sooner than later, because it opens up spots for other applicants on waiting lists (this is even more important with an early start program like we have at FSU)

Also, if $$ is going to determine where you go, I wouldn't be expecting much aid $$ with FSU (even if you have a 40+, 4.0) We have scholarships that you apply for, but they are not going to be throwing money at you (everyone gets full loans unless they do miliary or some other outside sourcing)...the school just doesnt have that kind of money to give away. 😉

Here's another question for you DAISY:

What does a person do if they are on a waitlist at one school but accepted to FSU? Can they withdraw at the last min. before the program starts if they want to go to waitlisted school and get off the waitlist?

I'm a little bit confused as to how this works as well. I mean, FSU starts on May 27 or something like that. So I'm assuming you have to pay summer tuition sometime before this date. Therefore, if you get into UF/USF, etc off of the waitlist, then you either have to go to FSU or you lose all that money...right? And approximately what day DO you have to pay tuition for FSU?
 
Thank you Dendrite, as usual coming up to the bat whenever I have a question.

Daisy, I knew that FSU does not offer much money I am just waiting to hear of the other schools to send relevant infomartion. I think that FSU is relatively cheap as it is.
 
I just got an email today from FSU essentially telling me to hang in there and that hopefully a final decision will be made soon concerning my hold status. For me it can't come soon enough. Are emails like this historically sent before good news? :idea:

In regards to the recent q's about FSU, I think the tuition is due around a week or two after the start of classes; I think after the drop date whenever that is. Ideally, you would want to set up your loans well in advance of that start date in order to make living arrangements.

You can most definately withdraw at the last minute from FSU if you are accepted to a higher choice school. Last year we had a hand-full of people not show up on the first day because they had been accepted from other schools a day or 2 before our orientation. So, on day 2 and 3 of orientation we had newly accepted students (pulled from the waiting list) showing up.

The only thing that ties you to FSU is actually attending first day of orientation. For example, if you go to orientation and half way through the day get an acceptance call from another school, you cannot leave orientation and go to the offering school.

Also, a point of confusion last year was whether EARLY orientation ties you to FSU....it DOES NOT...think of our early orientation as more of a 'second look' rather than orientation.

You pay summer tuition after attending the first day of class--if I remember correctly we paid tuition after the first week of anatomy (meaning 2 weeks after the first day of orientation)...they definately dont make you pay a deposit on tuition before classes start.

I got that e-mail too. I had actually forgotten that I was on hold there. I think it might be a sign that they haven't forgot about you. Also, I think it would be good to send an update. It sounds like they very seriously consider those. As for me, I have to stop procrastinating and withdraw.
