Florida Schools Application Thread (2008) part 2

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am a student at USF and I go to the majority of the lectures, but sometimes I miss a day or just need a little break and that's when I absolutely love the idea that they record lectures. Besides, I can't type or write as fast as some of the professors talk so I watch many lectures again to pick up on the details that I missed during class. I can't imagine med school with out the recordings!

I feel you on that one. I'm now spoiled by videostreaming that I don't know what I'd do without it. I mean I go to class but sometimes, like you said, you just can't type as fast as they speak.

USF didn't start video streaming lectures until just last year, right after I started my 3rd year. The only thing I used when I didn't go to class was noteservice, and sometimes the transcriptions were horrible. I wonder how class attendance has been affected by video streaming implementation...

I've heard about 40% don't go so that still a little over 70 students that do go and then you have the DPT and IMS students which add another several bunch so it doesn't look empty from what I've been told by some of the younger med students.

The other thing is that some of the classes still have required attendance so recordings are just to go back and listen afterwards. I think one of my friends told me the ethics course was like that.

Hey, guys. I'm applying this year and I'm wondering if someone can tell me how long USF takes to send transcripts to AMCAS and AACOMAS? Any idea?

Also, do any of the Florida schools screen? I'm thinking about pushing my MCAT back to June 13th and I'm wondering if I can still fill out secondaries while I'm waiting for my scores to come in or if everything will be on-hold until my scores are released.

Generally they will wait for you t get yoru scors back before they make a decision. The secondary essay questions from this past year are up if you want an idea of what kind of questions are asked on the essays. i saved them onto a world file so I can start thinking about them. Do you want me to send that to you?? I don't think I saved UF's but I recall it being similar to USF's question.

I'd love it if you could send them to me, if it's not too much trouble.

Do you have any idea how quickly USF sends out transcripts? Is there a lot of processing time involved when they get the request?

Only school that "screens" is UF. If I am not mistaken, they screen holistically when it comes to secondaries. UM used to have objective requirements for a secondary, but that is not true anymore. USF still has objective requirements.

UF sent me my secondary before they recieved my 2nd MCAT score.

Good rule of thumb for all schools is to give them two weeks from the time you request them to have AMCAS and AACOMAS receive and process them.

An important thing to keep in mind is that as you get into June and July, it may take even longer for AMCAS and AACOMAS to have processed them because that is when everyone sends them in. I would imagine that it is even worse in August and September.

I'll do that tonight.

Mike,

If you are reading this, can you please comment on the following rumor and confirm it or not?

Is it true that USF has lost its affiliation with Moffitt Cancer Center. I have read much in the news lately about UF and Shands hospital being contracted and affiliated with Moffitt Cancer Center for research and other purposes. However, I had not read anything about USF losing its affiliation with Moffitt Cancer Center.

Today I was talking with a friend and she told me a 2nd year med student told her that they have lost their affiliation with Moffitt Cancer Center.

Additionally, 2-3 days ago another 2nd year med student told me the same thing.

Can you as a fourth year and someone on the adcom tell me anything about this?

This is new to me if it is true. I highly doubt this is true. It would be terribly unwise of USF to lose this affiliation.

yeah I agree. I think the article said that it is just creating a new affiliation with UF but nothing about losing USF affiliation. However some second years are saying otherwise.

I did more research into this and found out that USF has a 10 year contract with Moffitt that was renewed in 2005. If it was renewed in 2005, it means that there are 8 years still before a renegotiation takes place.

Furthermore, another article from Jan. 24th 2008 by someone from UF said that they are not trying to cause Moffitt to drop its association with USF but rather it would be an additional association with them and their new association would not affect USF's current affiliation just be an extension of Moffitt's affiliations with other hospitals. When I talked with the 2nd year med student friend of mine 3 days ago he had heard some rumors but nothing concrete and he had basically said he heard Dr. Klasko was upset about this, but what i was telling him is that hospitals creating multiple affiliations is good because in the future we are going to have to go towards more collaborative rather then competitive attitudes towards each other and work with each other. you already see it happening with ORMC. ORMC is being used by FSU and UCF, Miami children's by UMiami and FIU, TGH by UTampa nursing and USF health, MD anderson by UCF and Utexas, etc. So I think that is what is up with USF but let's see what REL says and Mike says.

USF still is affiliated with Moffitt and little will change, if anything at all from a clinical standpoint. However, there is a new affilitation between Moffitt and UF from a research standpoint only. There are no current plans to develop this relationship with UF further. USF students will still have the same access to Moffitt and should see no effect from a clinical standpoint. I will be doing my residency at Moffitt and am told there will be no effect even from my standpoint. I will be a USF resident, not a UF one.

I think that most people know that UF has traditionally been a more research-oriented program. USF is climbing the ranks, but UF probably offered more financial incentives than USF could. It's no surprise that everything eventually comes down to money. That is why we now see this new affiliation.

For those of you planning on coming to USF or considering USF for med school, I would rest assured that your clinical training will not be affected by this development. You will also still have access to research opportunities if you so desire. Basically what has changed is where certain people get their paychecks from now.

can anyone tell me how tampa is like a city? i live in miami, and may very well be moving there. i have no idea how the city is like, i plan on going there for a few days to check it out. i am a city person, so i'm curious to know how downtown tampa is like. i also have heard abt st. pete and clearwater being great places to live, but i don't kno how far those places are from usf. is tampa a diverse city?

Tampa is a pretty diverse city, but it's a lot different from Miami. Downtown isn't the place to go, but there are some cool spots like Ybor and Channelside. South Tampa is awesome and beautiful, and it's close to TGH so it's a favorite spot. It's not super close to USF, but it's going the opposite direction of traffic so the distance is less of an issue. St. Petersburg and Clearwater and not nearly close enough to live there.

Mike, do you know anything about the second look that USF just had? I was there Sunday and had a good time. Did they invite everyone on the waitlist or just people higher up? Can the event change your standing on the waitlist? I didn't go for that purpose, of course, but I am curious because I'm on the waitlist. 😀

SouthTampa is downtown essentially. Its actually just a few miles from the true downtown and the business district. Maybe 3 at best on 275.

There are a few good places in South Tampa, though its no NYC or Miami.

the places to go that a lot of med students love in South Tampa and off of Howard Ave are McDinton's as far as bars go. There's also a few good restaurants in the area like Bellas and this good Thai place down there. But you are right that channelside is the other big hotspot where people hang out.

Ybor is disgusting. Channelside is better.

Other then that there's Peabodies on bruce b downs and Amberly drive. That's anther place where med students hang out a lot. its a bar where they have pool tables and stuff like that.

Thanks this is what I thought after searching it in google. That makes more sense.

As theoffen said, Tampa is different from Miami. Miami like Boston or NYC are places where they built up whereas Tampa is spread apart.

Tampa consists of the following districts: Temple Terrace, Tampa Palms, New Tampa, Carrollwood, South Tampa, and I may be forgetting one of them in here but these are the main ones.

The South Tampa area is where the true city portion and the old tampa region is. Most of the rest of those places are more residential areas and not really the true city feel. Channelside and downtown near South Howard is where there's stuff going on and ybor but ybor is disgusting from what most people tell me.

Does anybody know when UF will start accepting people off the hold list, and populating a waitlist? dont they finish interviewing soon as well?

I think those of you on the waitlist that came should get bonus points 😀

Sadly that's not how it works. I don't think position will change or that it helps to go to second look. Second look is just to give students an idea of what the school looks like again and ask questions. I think a person's position is set and now that interview season is winding down slowly it will be even less likely to move their position except in terms of getting the call depending on how many people drop and where they are on the waitlist.

I agree. Attending the USF second look will not affect your standing in any way. Period. It was solely intended to provide a more in depth look at what USF is all about. Those who attended were able to do so because they were the first to sign up. As an aside, I would rest assured that if you were told you are high on the waitlist you have a high chance of eventually being offered a position. Keep in mind that a large portion of the class traditionally is made up of people who were waitlisted. This was a common question during the second look.

I agree. I think a month or so ago when there was discussion about how waitlists are formed Dr. Larkin said in all his years he had never seen exceptions made once the score was given. Sadly, it's just a waiting game. I am curious to find out though if having USFs second look will actually decrease some of the waitlist movement. I am guessing it would only be very minimal if it did.

Hello everyone.

I may be moving to Tampa in order to attend USF there.

Is anybody here going to attend USF and also looking for
a roommate? If you are, please message me.

Does anybody have suggestions on where to find apartment
listings in Tampa?

Thanks.

Just got the call from USF. Bottom 1/3 of the waitlist.......again. I honestly don't know what to say. The interviews went well, I did everything they asked for in order to reapply and I'm left with the same news twice now. It looks like all I've got left is an FSU hold. I honestly don't know what to say. I'm just upset that they made me go through the whole interview process again only to crush me one more time. If you had no interest in me as a reapplicant, why make me go through this whole fiasco all over again? Good luck to all those who will be going there and for those with acceptances in general. I've sacrificed everything for this career and have received nothing but heartache in return. Sorry for being the one to throw a cold towl in here.

Bummer, medguy. Did you make an appointment last year to discuss how you could improve your application?

Sorry to hear. if you don't get in, I'd retake the MCAT and try to get a higher score, maybe do a SMP out of state or a 1 year masters at USF. try to get some advice from REL on what you could do for getting in any Fl. school including possibly FIU or UCF next year. Talk to Dr. Koehler and other adcom directors and find out what's holding you back. It took my friend 3 tries before he got in. He finally did Gtown SMP on try number 3 and that's what helped him to get in at USF.

Classifieds if you are looking to move in where there is already a roommate. Otherwise, if you are looking for new apartments, I'd look in the New Tampa and Tampa Palms area or St. Croix which is right before you get into the Tampa Palms region. Or Morris Bridge Road. That's another good area. Are you a guy or girl? Are you specifically looking for guy or girl roommate? is there a USF med thread on allopathic forums on here? that's a good place to find out who your future classmates are. What are your preferences in terms of other things like pets vs. no pets, and little things like that?

I started a USF COM 2012 facebook page. We have started to compile a list of possible housing. Here is the link - http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=20791190122 Also, there is this service in Tampa called Apartment Hunters. It's free and they will help you find an apartment in the area and price range you are looking for. I think you can just google search them and it will come up.

Thank you so much for the help everyone!!
I really appreciate it.

I will look at those resources to see if I can find a
roommate.

I am a guy looking for a guy roommate. I am hoping that
my roommate won't have pets.

Thank you.
Good luck to everyone. Hang in there!!

Interview invite at FSU!!! 😀 This process is such a rollercoaster.

Congrats sillymemed!!! go kick butt at the interview!

Thanks ankit! I have to start searching this thread to see what to expect on interview day. Does anybody know the official start date at FSU?

Congrats on the interview. I am pretty sure that the first day is something like May 26 or 27. I think the first few days, maybe the first week is orientation type stuff...so actual classes will start pretty close to June 1.

As for what to expect of the interview, my FSU interviews were extremely relaxed and conversational. I don't think I was asked more than about 4 typical interview questions by both of my interviewers combined. Everything else was pretty much me telling about my family and talking to the interviewers about completely non-medical things.
It's looking more and more likely every day that I will be at FSU, so maybe I'll see you there. Good luck.

Yeah, I'm at work...got distracted and didn't see your post. 27th it is.

Thanks medgator and gujudoc. I look forward to the interview. Honestly, I was pretty shocked to hear from them because I thought that their interview season was pretty much over. I'm so grateful though 🙂

I am quite sure that UF is done interviewing (the last one was this past Friday). That means that group should hear this Wednesday, and those of us on the hold list might hear the Wednesday after (i hope!). After interviewing in September, I am eager to see where I stand....

Tampa is a city, but not too much like Miami. If I were you (and I give this advice to everyone who is going to USF), I would live in South Tampa. It is closer to all the "going-ons" of Tampa--good restaurants, bars, malls, etc. I grew up in North Tampa (Tampa Palms), and if I ever get a USF interview (still hoping) and get accepted, I am going to be looking in the Hyde Park/Soho area. A lot of students start out living close to USF in North Tampa, but then move to South Tampa.

No they go through April from what I remember my friend telling me last year.

So are all the FL schools officially full today? If so, I'm sure there are of few of you that will be getting some good news in the next few days. From previous years it seems like now and May 15 is when all the action is.

I called USF yesterday and I was told that it would be closer to May 15 since they're still interviewing. I doubt that they will start calling students now especially since somebody who interviews next week could be put on the high waitlist. I could be wrong though. Maybe Mike can fill us in on this.

I thought the AAMC required all schools to have fully filled their class by March 15, but I could be wrong. If USF is already "full" (most schools I believe accept more students than spots because they know some will not accept) than I guess there will not be waitlist movement until May when everyone has to choose only one school.

I was on the waitlist last year and found out I was accepted sometime in March (I think). Either way I know that I got off the waitlist well before May 15, so there is definetly movement before then. However, the majority of the movement comes May 15th and later. We also had a girl accepted a week into classes this year!

So does this mean that for those who have had/will have interviews in March are likely to be waitlisted at best?

I really hope not :scared:

Maybe not because I think I have read that schools accept more students than seats they have available because they know that not everybody will accept.
