Florida Schools Application Thread (2008) part 2

Why, may I ask, if UF not one of your choices for medical school?

One I don't think I have a shot there, and 2. even if I did have a shot there I like the video streaming and easing into the curricula philosophy of USF or Miami.

I like that USF even if you go to lecture if you miss something you have the means to go back and watch it whereas at UF they require you to get permission second year if you want to even as so much as tape record it on your own tape recorder and first year they have a recording but they aren't as accomodating as USF.

I also like the fact that at USF and Umiami they don't throw you straight into the deep end from day one but sorta ease you into the harder anatomy stuff.

I also like the city feel better then the small town feel. However if I had to do it over I'd probably try to go to UF for undergrad but I just couldn't see being there for med school.

Its more a curricula issue and general way they do things.

But I wouldn't say one program is better then the other. I think it all depends on the person. For one of my 2 best friends, UF was a much better fit for her and I would have discouraged her from staying at USF and did so. But for me and my learning style, I think I'd like USF or Miami's way of doing things and hopefully UCF if they make it more like USF or Miami but that's yet to be determined.

Well I don't know if you know but first-years start with anatomy now at UM. Personally I think it is better than what we went through...😱

Yeah I heard about. USF has anatomy 1st year but it starts in early Nov. and goes for 5 months.

They do molecular medicine first which is 10 weeks of biochem, molecular bio, cell bio, and histology. Theny also do med ethics and humanities during that time.

I think they want me too, but they're just playing hard to get😀

Speaking of which, does anyone have a clue as to how filled USF is now? I assume that although they use rolling admissions they've kept at least a few seats vacant for the Jan-march invites.

I have been told by the admissions office that the UF committee re-reviews applications in December and sends out additional acceptances in December and February. Has this happened for anyone or does anyone know if they are actually known to do this?

Thanks!

This is definitely true. There are lots of people that get put on hold and then are accepted later. Maybe even the majority.

Accepted to FSU!

I never would have thought that I'd have 2 acceptances before Christmas.

What an awesome christmas present, now you can start telling your parents to buy your expensive stethoscopes and what not. LOL! 😀

CONGRATS! Where else where you accepted outside of FSU?

Good luck also if you have more left to go.

YAYY!!! i got a call for fsu interview today.. this is so crazy.. im excited..

Thank You,

Haha, I am dropping hints about a certain Littman.

I was accepted to Miami's Boca campus last week. Although, I am still waiting to hear from other schools up North that I interviewed at in November, and I am also waiting to hear from Miami's main campus as well. Around January 15th, it will be feast or famine.

Good luck with the other schools and as far as Fl. goes esp. main campus Miami. 🙂

Nope Dr Kohler actually called me during my FSU interview to tell me i was accepted . . . that's not awkward!

That's awesome man! wow. Right before Christmas too. Now starts the lenghty process of applying for loans. Congrats👍

Same to UFgrad00. Seems this was probably the last burst of invites and acceptances before the new year. Way to go:hardy:

In recent years the Student Affairs Offices closed up between Christmas and New Years as they took their annual leaves. I saw to it that at least one person was in the Admissions Office on all days that were not actual holidays since Admissions services applicants who may be home for the holidays. I suspect the same policy will prevail this year.

I actually know someone that got an interview with USF next Thursday, December 27th. I was pretty surprised that USF did any interviews next week.

I was told by USF that they only did interviews on Monday. I wonder if they made a one time interview date on a Thursday because of the holiday?

I'm pretty surprised that they have any interviews on any other day besides Monday.

Unless there is some special circumstances I highly doubt they do regular interviews on Thursdays.

I know last year there were Tues and Thurs. interviews but in April for IMS students.

I also know that this past semester I've seen some people having individual tours on thursdays. But its been like one or two people only not a whole interview group as big as the Monday groups. Also the person giving the tours on the non Monday days was usually not the student tour guides but one of the people in the admissions office. I don't know his name but I've seen him before even when REL was still at USF.

So don't know if this is IMS people, or special circumstances or what the story is. I know they are doing some things slightly different this year.

I was told by USF that they only did interviews on Monday. I wonder if they made a one time interview date on a Thursday because of the holiday?

That could be the reason. In the past though they didn't interview people during the holiday break because the students were done and away so they wouldn't get to meet the students.

Maybe there's still hope of an invite in the next few weeks after all. I was kind of wondering how USF was planning on calling people for, say the 21st of Jan. Also, I've never really heard of USF scheduling interviews for reg. MD applicants on any other day but monday. I know fsu kind of switches between mondays and fridays, but USF has been fairly consistent. All I can say is right now with only a waitlist in hand I hope USF sends along some Christmas love soon.

I'm hoping to hear from USF's ADCOM as well. I interviewed in November but they put me on "hold" until they received my grades (I'm in their Grad program). It would be interesting to know if the ADCOM is still meeting during the holidays (which I highly doubt).

The ADCOM is not meeting until January.

You are in the anatomy program right? I wonder if we've met. I'm in the molecular medicine program.

Yeah. I like it so far. I'm not sure if we've met. I'll PM you.🙂

Does anyone else feel that USF is being skimpy on interviews? I've interviewed at UF and Tulane and have an FSU invite. Only a couple people I know have received USF interviews. It is one of my top choices and I am feeling sad....

Yeah USF has changed a bit this year with the new admissions director and what not. Just keep updating them if you have new volunteer activities, new grades that will help, and other such things of that nature.

I'm a 4th year student at USF and am not really sure about the reason for any changes. However, I would probably attribute any perceived changes due to a major overhaul in the admissions department starting with the departure of Rel to UCF.

Yeah I think REL's leaving left quite a few changes. Also, wasn't Dr. Dennis Ledford the head of the committee before for quite a while? I know he left for USF Sarasota to become the head of something over there and Dr. Gonzalez replaced him. But I don't know if he was just head of the committee that year we had the premed forum or if it was a permanent position he had until he left USF COM for sarasota.

I think the biggest change i noticed this year was the calling in much more advance for interview invites. In the past they called every week for the following week's worth of interviews. That was REL's old system.

I've been feeling the same about USF with regards to the number of invites. I'm sure that like the past few years they have received a surplus in applications; I also think the departure of REL has a major part to play concerning the seemingly few number of invites and acceptances I've been hearing about. Maybe it's just me, but I think that come Jan. there will be a surge in invites from USF, or at least one could hope.

Anyone know when the last interview date is scheduled for USF? I assume sometime in mid March, but the last time I called I was told they interview even into April. Just exciting to know that within the next three months or so I'll find out my fate (still hopeful🙂)

Anyone know USF's cost of attendance for next year? Also, what are the residency requirements in Florida?

Not sure of cost but if you are not already a Fl. resident at the time of acceptance, you can establish residency after the first year of med school.

I think the tuition last year was around $23K for residents and somewhere near $50K+ for non-residents. The path to establish Florida residency is kind of confusing. I remember having to mail personal documents to UF just to prove my residency and I've lived here since the age of 2. Most schools require a driver's license, perhaps a bank account number, voter ID, etc. Not sure of the path to becoming a resident, but it would probably include living at least 6 months-1 year here, or so I've heard.

Only on a premed forum can you expect to see people typing away about their worries and hopes of getting into certain programs on Christmas eve🙄

gujudoc, you just might be my hero 🙂

I'm totally in love with USF but as an out of stater that's seriously interested in family medicine, not going to my state school seems a bit crazy... but if i can establish residency, i think i can handle it

Not sure about residency requirements. Tuition for this upcoming semester at USF is $11,524.13 (in state) and $27,788.29 (out of state). It usually increases a small amount each year.

I seriously doubt there will be any change in the pattern of interview invitations starting in January. As is the trend nationwide, USF has a record number of applications this year. Therefore, a fewer % of applicants will be interviewed. As an aside, I am sharing in all of your anxiety regarding acceptances within the coming months, although mine is for residency. Residency application is SO much like med school application, except you must go through the match process instead if getting invitations to multiple places. Good luck to all.

Merry Christmas!!! Unbelievable that this year is almost over.

My old childhood neighbor is in the 2nd year class right now at USF COM (C/O 2010). Anyhow, his two closest friends in the C/O 2010 at USF COM are out of staters. One had already established in state residency before starting but the other was a true out of stater from Pennsylvania when he started first year. He's the one who told me that he can establish residency in Fl. after first year.

Merry Christmas!!! Unbelievable that this year is almost over.

Time flies so quickly!

I'm not going to be one of those lame PC people that say Happy Holidays because tomorrow is Christmas.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and if you are Muslim, Happy belated Eid and if you are Jewish, Happy Hannakah!

But Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone in the Fl. thread. May the new year bring you all the good news you hope to get from the admissions offices and perhaps everything else you hope for!

i have a quick question specifically relating to FSU. My stats are below avg. 3.44 gpa, havent taken the MCAT but expecting a 30-32 based on current practice tests. I am applying in June and my school of choice is FSU. I really like their program along with their mission statment and well... everything. I have a few things going to my advantage. I just finished an engineering degree which will atleast make me stand out and give me somethign to chat about during interviews and I am hispanic american ( moved here when i was 15) which an interest in working with the underserved latin population in florida. Here is the dilema. I know that people applying early decision are ususally expected to have high stats. The hardest thing with FSU seems to be being able to prove that you are really commited to their mission statement. Do you think that applying early decision , at least for FSU, is a sign of genuine interest in their mission statement and do they take this into consideration since doin so would pretty much mean I have no chance of getting into any other school.

Hey, I was just interviewed and accepted by FSU recently, so I will try to answer. I wouldn't worry about early decision, if you can maintain your GPA and get an MCAT score in the range you said, you should do great. I really don't have a great MCAT, but I found it interesting that most of the people in my interview group didn't have high stats as well. So, FSU really looks beyond applicants stats, and doesn't try to fill their class with applicants whose greatest thing going for them is their MCAT and GPA. I would say, that it is imperative to be as genuine as possible in your essays. Also, try to convey the meaningful nature of your clinical experiences. Just to throw this out there, I felt that during my interview, most student's bench research is undervalued at FSU. (Probably because they don't have MD/PHD's and the school wants to produce clinicians).

Actually, to sum it up, during your interview focus on trying to convey that you want to be the best clinician you can be, and keep your essays meaningful and related to what you've learned in your clinical experiences. Also, in your interview you wil be asked a lot about health policy, so it helps to have some opinions and an idea or two.

Merry Christmas to everyone. At least we can have one day in which to forget about everything related to applications and interviews, and just focus on friends, family, and of course gifts👍
Here's to happy times and good news:hardy:

Mike, I think these numbers are for a half year??

I seem to remember oos tuition being somewhere in the $50K ballbark while in state tuition was around $23K a year. Either that or USF has become very generous, or hit it rich somewhere. Merry Christmas to everyone by the way. Now all I need is an acceptance to put some icing on the holiday cheer😀
