Florida Schools Application Thread (2008) part 2

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Although I am partial to main campus miami(hopefully they will accept me), I agree with you that Boca has alot of advantages. One thing that is very nice is that the hospital in which you do a lot of your training does not have interns and residents. This means you will have a lot more one on one time with the doctors. The program at Boca seems like a much more personalized experience.

That may mean more interaction with attendings but often you learn the most from working with interns or people who are doing the actual nitty gritty of the work. Also, in a major teaching hospital you see a large breadth of cases you don't see in a less academic established teaching hospital.

On a side note, I was looking at FIU's website and it seems its going to get affiliations with Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Miami as well as the Jackson Health System (don't know if that means Jackson Memorial-Umiami's teaching hospital), and Miami Children's hospital. I found that interesting. miami children's hospital is one of the few children's hospitals in Fl. that is highly ranked as a pediatric hospital in USNews and someone else can correct me but I believe it along with Mt. Sinai Medical Center also have affiliations with Miami's med school. But someone who knows more would have to confirm so don't take my word for that.

wooo i jsut got my first acceptance: AECOM

now if UM would just invite me to interview already

my recent concern is what usf has told me, they indicated to me that im basically sort of high middle... since my interview, there were 6 interview batches. in the spring there will be another 14 interview batches... so that list can change dramatically, i just hope i can hold on to my spot

you have me worried now about not getting off the usf waitlist. i was high tier but i interviewed in early October. I think im going to give them a call sometime in the next week. im pretty much set on usf right now. good luck with your waitlist by the way...

Hey, Congratulations to everyone who has a recent acceptance or interview.

I was totally thinking about how FIU would do rotations at the Jackson Memorial. Would it get just a little more competitive to be a third year and in the back of the line behind other 4th yrs, interns, and residents? Anyways, good for FIU, there is a need for another med-school in Miami. I also have seen somewhere on Miami's website that they have affiliations with Mt Sinai. Nova also has opportunities to rotate at Mt Sinai as well, not Miami Children's, my bad. http://medicine.nova.edu/academics/clinical/core_rotation_sites.html

Miami Children's is a really, really nice hospital. I wouldn't mind rotating in a place like that! I know residents from here often rotate over there, I don't think med students do though. I am not sure about that.

let me kno how ur phonecall goes... i could just be OCD'ing, but the admissions office was basically trying to cover her assets a lot w/ respect to what she could tell me. i think she may have wanted to let me kno the extreme, worst possible scenario, but anything could happen... in anycase let me kno how it goes if u can; she did mention that it is possible for anyone in the top ten waitlist spots to all of a sudden wind up in the mid 20 or 30 spots

I am sorry to be such a bother on here. As everyone (kind of) knows... I have been accepted to USF and I am wait-listed at Miami. I sent a Letter of Interest to Miami last week, but after much consideration, I would like to send them a Letter of Intent. I loved USF, but my family is in Ft. Lauderdale, and I feel like UM might be a better fit.

Do you think that sending the Letter of Intent will help me get off the wait-list any sooner than May, or is there no hope?

It seems like a lot of people (including myself..I will admit 😳) are concerned about USF's waitlist. I guess the only thing we can do is call them every 4-5 weeks and check on our status. I've talked to some med students at USF and they sounded very reassuring about the high waitlist. Then again, as someone mentioned earlier, there are still a lot of interview dates left. Can we please fast forward to May???

I'm sure, but I'm too excited to use the search function....USF emailed me today (after 3 months of silence post-secondary submission), asking me to call them ASAP, but I didn't read my email in time to do it today. Is this the email they send when they want to schedule an interview?

SO EXCITED!

It sounds like you might get an invite 😀 I got the same e-mail before I was notified of my interview invite.

Definitely! I received the same one yesterday. Congratulations and let me know when you are scheduled for.

I'm not sure how things work but it couldn't hurt so I say send it.

There are a few people who've posted on here in the past who are med students there, you might want to see if they specifically might be able to answer those questions or know who can answer them.

I'd go ahead and try it and let them know your reasons however do know that there is hope for getting off the waitlist. I saw a few SDNers get off of it last year i.e. Dr. Zeke and NervousNed. So its possible. Just keep your prayers up. Also update them with new things like work experiences or volunteering or grades if you think that might help and if they look at those things post interview.

Oh ok. Hey look at the post below asking about the impact of LOIs inparticular those of intent and not of interest in getting off a waitlist at Miami. What's your input on that??

Also, I ended up looking it up later on. I guess its not JMH but Jackson North which FIU is going to affiliate with.

Is Mt. Sinai Medical Center in miami affiliated with Miami Miller? My friend's cousin went there for rads residency following grad. from NYMC in 2005. And another question, is Mt. Sinai Medical Center affiliated with Mt. Sinai medical school in NY or is it coinicidence of name as much as MLK in any given city is for a street name?

I looked up the whole JMH thing after I posted that. It turns out it is their Jackson North Medical Center which is also part of the Jackson health system but not Jackson Memorial Hospital where FIU students will rotate.

Its about 382 beds in that hospital. DW, how big is JMH?

What I found out makes sense because I remember reading a long time ago that Miami Miller didn't want FIU to be at JMH since they have all their own students there.

Don't sweat it just yet. Do call them but don't sweat it just yet.

To those of you who received an interview at USF, does anyone know if there is a particular time in the day or if there is a general day of the week that they send out invites? It may sound like an odd question, but it's just nerve-wrecking to not have received one yet. Perhaps this may prevent my obsession with checking my e-mail for any good news.

Thanks!

Thanks!

I got an e-mail on a Friday asking that I call the admissions office as soon as possible. I called and found out that I had received an interview!

Speaking of USF I am anxiously awaiting a call from them to see if I have been accepted. In the interview they mentioned that they would call us this Wednesday morning. Should I be worried that it's already 1:30pm and no call:scared: I think I'm just being paranoid. I guess patience really is a virtue.

No they sometimes get late with their phone calls.

Thanks to everyone for the congrats and kind words!...Good Luck to everyone who was under review at Miami this past week, Hope you guys get that e-mail today at 5pm sharp!:luck:

I interviewed at USF last Monday too. And I called today at 3:00 PM to find out that I have been placed "high" on the wait-list. But the lady was new to work this week and so she could not tell me exactly where on the waitlist I stood.

I got ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!! I am so very happy. USF here I come. I finally got an e-mail at around 3:30pm with the good news. Good luck to all those waiting for Miami.

Congratulations for getting USF! 👍

Looks like we have to wait another day for Miami campus decisions.

When did everyone interview at Miami that is waiting for "Today's" decision? I interviewed back on December 3rd and they said Jan 16th would be the earliest we would hear. I am just curious how many interview days their committee is deciding on today. Hope all goes well, and what is one more day since we have already had to wait over a month... right????

Congrats on the great news!! 😀

I interviewed at both campuses in early December as well. I have since heard from the Boca campus, but I was told that we would hear back on the 16th as well, due to Christmas break and such. I know that they had interviews the week after Dec 3rd and I think they made decisions for previous interview groups the week before Dec 3rd.

Wow, lots of questions!

To the person who wants to go to UM for family reasons, a see no reason a LOI would hurt you. If you are really set on Miami I would tell them that and give them your reasons.
I think DrZeke from last year did it and wound up getting in; I would PM her.

Students from UMiami rotate at Mount Sinai Medical Center on Miami Beach, it is a very nice private hospital. I don't believe it is related to any of the other Mount Sinais (e.g. New York, Toronto). Check this out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Sinai_Medical_Center_&_Miami_Heart_Institute

JMH (not counting the private hospital just purchased by UM, and Sylvester) has almost 1600 bed off the top of my head. 3rd largest public and teaching hospital in U.S.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!! See now you can scrap that DO application. Bwahahaha.

:hardy: 😀 😛

Was it Leila Amiri the new associate Director of admissions under Dr. Koehler???

Mrs. Amiri used to work on the main campus as a chemistry advisor then a prehealth advisor for close to 12 years. She was just awarded a new position on this side of campus.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm impressed by Umiami students on here. First Arsenic, then Deuist, and now you helping students out on SDN. That is more then I've seen from any other med school. Much appreciated. 🙂

I have a question. I am applying next cycle.

I went to UF ( go gators ) I have a 3.44 gpa ( maybe a little higher if they accpet some of my engineering classes as bcmp) Practice mcat scores have been on average 29-31. With those numbers are UF, USF, UM all out of the question? My extracurriculars are good. My clinical experience (~80 hrs) has been at a free clinic so no ER or anything. I dont know if that hurts. I have also shadowed a few physicians dealing primariy in primary care since thats what I am intersted in.Has anybody on this thread gotten in with similar stats?

Oh and congratulations to all of you who have been accepted!. I have been watching from the sidelines as I read this thread just about every day.....ok... every hour.

Hey, what up! Those schools are definitely not out of the question. Your clinical experience is sound, but I might suggest to continue to volunteer while you are applying. Doesn't have to be much, 3 hrs or more a week is fine. Do as best as you can on the MCAT, and if you are still in school, try to get B+'s and above this semester.

Do you have any research experience? Because that can help your application at UF and USF. The primary care volunteering is a real plus, by the way, for FL schools.

remember next cycle tht FIU and UCF are opening too. So there are more schools to add to your list.

UMiami and USF are not out of question. UF, I'd go ahead and apply to but know that its a stretch as that's an overly competitive school to get into as far as Fl. schools go.

That said, I'd strengthen your ECs if that's all you have. Like someone else said vol. 1 day a week or do research. Another option is to get a job in a research lab or in a clinical setting.

Oh I have more EC's. Those were only the clinical ones. I am still volunteering at the free clinic. I had a 3 month internship for an engineering firm that let me work on their underprivileged communities projects. I have 1.5 years of lab work. 3 months of independent research. A publication from a design that won 1st place state and 2nd place nationally. I also have done community outreach as a tutor and mentor for local teens particularly interested in medicine and engineering and I volunteered as a recreational soccer coach for 2 years. There are a few more things but I agree that I should improve on them and am currently trying to do so. I COMPLEATLY forgot about UCF and FIU. Thanks for reminding me. I think that with the free tuition UCF is gonna have some relativly high admission averages. As for FIU I have no idea.

BTW…GujuDoc, you are awesome. I have read 1000's of your posts and you always give good advice. BTW when are you applying?

I'm applying next cycle with you after my masters program. 🙂

With the rest of your profile put into perspective, I think you have an awesome shot for any of the med schools. I'd even say with the research if you get a 30+ score you have a shot at UF. Heck maybe even with a 28 or 29, though UF is more fickle then other schools.

That said, I think you have a shot at any of the Fl. schools. Do you graduate next year or are you taking a year off? in other words are you a junior or senior this year?

BTW if you are engineering, I have no doubt that you will be able to pull of that score range or higher. Engineering people traditionally have some of the highest scores. And one more thing, USF and Miami and even UF love their own UF premeds. I remember hearing some statistic about 40% of USF COM students were either a combination of USF and UF students or strictly UF students. don't remember now. So the schools know the breadth and difficulty of UF I'm sure.

you have me worried now about not getting off the usf waitlist. i was high tier but i interviewed in early October. I think im going to give them a call sometime in the next week. im pretty much set on usf right now. good luck with your waitlist by the way...

So I just talked with my friend again last night. The one who is high tier waitlist at USF. She was saying that when she called they said there weren't that many people on waitlist yet. If that's true that means that there are tons of people who were accepted but also a lot of open seats still. I'm guessing, though there's no way to confirm this, that the class is half full and they are still filling it up so most likely its possible that even if they add to the list that you may not be shifted from top to bottom just shifted around within top tier.

Exactly. It stands to reason that if you were high-tier compared to the applicants before, you will be high-tier compared to the applicants after.

Some :luck: everyone's way!

hello hello, any one here from UM today? Hello! Ahhhhhhhhh, should I call? Dr. Hinkley said the 16th, now it is the 17th. Ahhhhhh.:scared:

If it's any help, my decision came 1 day after Dr. Hinkley said they would. Sometimes they get a little behind. You'll hear soon. 👍

Did you get in? This is the day after so I am nervous. If they are behind on my e-mail they should be behind on everyone's correct? I mean there was only 12 of us.

Wow, I am glad that I am not the only one. I was told back on my Dec 3rd interview to expect to hear from the main miami campus on the 16th. I thought that all correspondence is done through email so if it is "less than desirable" news we still would have heard by now.

Don't give up on Miami yet. I think all the schools are a bit behind because of the holiday. I didn't hear back about my USF interview until almost 4pm yesterday and they had told me at the interview they would call in the morning. Patience pays off!

I sure did. 😀 Adcoms are busy with other things, so it may be that one member was late getting their decision in, a family emergency, Dr. Hinkley being indisposed, etc. Don't sweat it. You'll hear soon.
