Are you serious? Read the post before making such a ridiculous ill-informed comment. 176 = pre-meds that turn into medical students, whether they go to UF or otherwise.

My bad. Some of these posts are dragging on though. I'm a older non-trad who pays little attention to the pre-med stuff. Doesn't factor into my situation at all. But I'll pay closer attention to the details before commenting on numbers again.

Is it safe to assume that if one hasn't received an interview by now from FSU, that she isn't getting one? I'm filling out the FAFSA, and don't want to send a school my bank info if they aren't going to need it.

They interview til April but if you are accepted elsewhere I'd go elsewhere. I've heard some stuff from current med students that make me question a lot of things about FSU. Send me a PM if you want to know what I'm talking about.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are still sending out the last few interview invites. They may even send out invites for another 2 or 3 weeks. But based on your mdapps, I can't tell that you have any real ties to Florida. If this is the case, I wouldn't hold my breath. They accept almost no OOS students. Still, an LOI can never hurt.

On a side note ::nasty word:: UF Med. As an alum, I'm sick of hearing how loyal the medical school is to "their own." They basically told me where to shove it, and I think its a slap in the face. I think a school should honor their undergraduate students, or else why be affiliated with the school?

I have been calling them over the last few weeks periodically, and they said their last interview invites would be sent on Friday, March 28. That day came and nothing happened, so I called them again. They said that they have started rejecting people without interviews, but that they will be opening up new interview dates. In short, if you have heard nothing yet from UM, you are either going to be one of the last few in or last few out (to get an interview) during the next week or two.

I just got off the phone with USF - Leila said I was in the bottom of the top 1/3 of the waitlist. My heart dropped when I heard the word bottom!
This is my second waitlist and still on hold at UF. USF is by far my top choice. Do I have any hope?!
Oh, and the waiting begins yet again...

Bottom waitlist is as good as reject most of the time. Do you know why you were waitlisted so low? Was it interview skills, lack of clinical experience or something else in the ECs? MCAT score or GPA??
Talk with Leila again and ask her what was the weak points so you can improve that for next year if you have to reapply.
UF puts most people on hold til April and makes decisions from there about accept and waitlist vs. reject. Wait it out til this month when they get back decisions and work from there.
She mentioned it was because of my lack of shadowing. So there is no hope even though I'm in the top 1/3? Sad times. 🙁

Unfortunately, I think Guju is right. During my interview at USF they said that if you are placed in the bottom 1/3 you should start considering your other options. I've also heard that USF is good about giving applicants feedback as to way they were not accepted. I think it would be a good idea to call and find out.
By the way, are you a Florida resident? Not being a resident can make getting accepted a bit tougher.
I just reread this post and I am a bit confused. If you are in the top 1/3 of the waitlist I think have a good chance of being accepted. Or are you saying you are in the top 1/3 of the bottom 1/3?

I think I was not clear with my first post...Leila said if she has to divide up the waitlist I am in the top 1/3 of the waitlist but towards the bottom of this section but the way she said it "bottom of the top 1/3" scared me. She said she would be calling around May 15th to let me know where I stand.
I am just so nervous because I really have to decide if I should retake the MCAT very soon. 😱

This is what I remember being told on interview day:
Top 1/3 - very good chance of getting accepted
Middle - some years people are accepted other years not
Bottom 1/3- very, very slim chance

Like I said, very slim is as good as rejection. I have yet to meet a person who has gotten in off of the bottom 1/3. Middle and top 1/3 are the ones who usually get in from what I've seen in the past.
Now I'm confused are you in the bottom 1/3 or top 1/3???????
If in the top 1/3, you most likely will be accepted. If in the bottom 1/3 you are most likely rejected at the end of everything.
Nevermind ignore my post above this. Top 1/3 means you are most likely in just means more waiting. bwahahaha.
I thought you meant bottom bottom 1/3 as in low tier waitlist originally. That would be a rejection as I said in other posts. Thanks for clearing up. Congratulations. Top 1/3 is a good position to be in as most people end up matriculating or at least getting accepted out of this group of waitlistees when all is said and done.

not that I disagree with you, but why even waitlist people if they have no chance of being accepted? that just gives students false hope and delays the inevitable. if indeed the bottom 1/3 students always get rejected, then usf (and all others that practice the same thing) need to make their lists smaller.
with that said, i'm sure many of you will respond that adcoms just want to ensure they'll fill their class, hence the reason for the large waitlist...it's just an unfair thing to leave students hanging (with no shot of admittance) that have put their hearts, soul, and paycheck in their application.
It is unfair but it is done because of the rare chance that they could lose more people then originally expecting to from the original acceptees so they do it for insurance.
That said, my friend just sent me an IM telling me that UF med will make decisions from their hold list for alternate list, accept, and reject decisions between the weeks of Apr. 15th to April 30th. That's in 2 weeks you guys so good luck 😀
An alternate list is just that, a list of alternate students. The whole point of the list is to keep the class size full if an extraordinary amount of students decide to go elsewhere. The school HAS to cover the extremes, because it can happen. It sucks, but that is the way it is.
I'm into Miami and was planning to go there, but just got a surprisingly quick acceptance at G.W. Now all the sudden I have to start making decisions. I wish Miami had moved up the rankings more this year to make this a little easier.
Some will say that rankings don't matter, but I think they carry some weight. I am not sure how long you've been following this thread, but it seemed to me like there was a consensus that Miami, as an entire instution will improve over the next couple years. This may be speculation on the part of all of us, who aren't really "in the know." The things that made all of us think they will improve: new dean and alot of his staff from Duke U, re-dedication as "Miller" School of Medicine, ant the associated investment/research boom, the focus of the school to bring in students with higher numbers, etc. I'm not sure what G.W.'s match list was like, but looking at U.M.'s, you'll definitely have the opportunity to pursue what you want. It's hard to predict what a school's ranking will be like in 4 years.
Are you a Fl. resident? is cost at one place more then the other? Do you prefer warm or cold weathered places? What about the differences in curricula? Did one suit you better then the other? These are the things I'd think about. My old friend went to Gtown for the SMP and had he gotten into GWU and a Fl. school he would have chosen GWU. He only got into USF so he's here but he said he loved DC much more then Fl. after haing been in Fl. his whole life.
One more thing, as far as rankings go. I hope no one thinks that any of the Florida schools will magically jump into the top 10 of rankings or anything like that. If you look at the lists, the research money that the "established schools" bring in, so far out paces everyone else, that they are pretty much entrenched at the top. The top 25 seems "set," they may bounce around a little but as individual schools, they are top tier, and won't budge any time soon. For a school outside of the range, it would be an achievement just to rise a few places.

One FSU prof is going to UCF, one to somewhere in GA, and one is retiring apparently. One of these is apparently a great pathology teacher. I heard today that 2 UF professors are going to FSU (I am guessing to fill the lost spots), one of which is the anatomy professor.
Have other people heard this, and what do you think the ramifications of these moves are???

Sounds like the only school that no one wants to move from is USF 😀. Honestly, I think that is pretty normal. Faculty and staff come and go based on better offers they receive at other universities. Most faculty do not work their way up at one school instead they hop from one school to the next. That being said I think it is a good sign when professors have been there for 10+ years. It means they are really happy with the program.
When did you interview? This I must know.
