If you take Calc 2 as serious as orgo for instance, you should do ok. Many people in my class thought they could study for calc 2 like they did calc 1 and they became overwhelmed by the middle of the class. I think calc 2 is harder than other freshman and sophomre courses like gen chem, gen bio, calc 1 and stat.

Yes, Amcas will calculate every math course into your BCPM gpa, trig, calc, etc. However there maybe some exceptions with "business math" courses, I'm not sure about those.

Don't take the upper lever calc courses. I can't imagine them helping you too much. However, they can certainly hurt your gpa. I aced Calc I, and hurt myself in Calc II and III later on. I was an enginerring major, so I had to take them.

I'd recommend some upper-level science courses, possibly some grad level courses if you're allowed. Some medical schools also like to see statistics, which is usually a breeze.

On the other hand, doing well in upper level courses is impressive. That being said, the vast majority of applicants take easier courses out of fear of dropping their GPA (which I sympathize with).

When did they start requiring this? It was my understanding that they required 6 credit hours of mathematics courses, which could be fulfilled with Calc I and Statistics (a common route); at least, that is what is said on their website.

yea, this is so not true.
 
Yeah check the FSU website again, I truly doubt that calc 2 is required in order to matriculate into their medical school. After all when in the heck would we use any calculus in medicine, not to mention organic chemistry?

I'm transferring from a CC to a Uni. FSU and other colleges require Cal 2 for Bio Majors to transfer.

I thought FSU required all accepted applicants to make their final decision on April 15. How would this be possible if they are still interviewing?

Ohhhh your talking about taking calc 2 to get a B.S. degree. I was referring to the classes that must be taken in order to attend their medical school(prereqs) like biochemistry.

I know that FSU is interviewing this week, at least. I've heard it said that FSU interviews throughout most, if not all of this month. I don't know how long they invite for interviews, but I know that I was called for my interview a week before my interview date. You may still have a chance to get an interview invite for another week or a little more, I would guess.

Yes, but as the same link explains (or at least as I interpret it), it is not necessarily true that a student can't hold multiple acceptances after April 15. It seems to me that AAMC gives early-start schools the right to hold students to an April 15th deadline, but that it leaves that decision to the school. I am currently holding 3 acceptances and 1 WL spot, although I am probably withdrawing this week. Considering that FSU has said nothing to me about sending them a statement of intent or a deposit, I don't think that they have an April 15 mandatory decision deadline, at least not this year. I could be wrong.

To anyone who is trying to decide between Boca and Miami, feel free to PM me.

Since I was supposed to go to Boca last year and had a bunch of curriculum talks with some of the deans at Boca, I will be happy to answer anyone's questions about Miami's curriculum compared to Boca. Obviously current Boca students will know best about their day to day activities, but I'm very familiar with the points on which our campuses differ and I truly feel that both schools offer a unique and awesome experience. In the end, most people choose one school over the other, because of personal preferences.

Either way, I'm here to answer any questions.

Just when I thought I had finally made a decision!...I got an interview invite today from USF. It's for next Monday, the last day of interviews.

Congrats on the invite!! Two of my friends received an invite this morning for Monday as well.
 
As for UF, Robyn sent an email today that said decisions are being made this week. Emails and/or letters will be mailed next week. All should know about their respective decision by the end of next week. Good luck to all! :luck:
 
Anyone know if FSU has started to make any movement through their hold list yet?? Sheesh, it's mid April already and they've still got me in limbo😕 Also, I've been on hold since October! I just wish they'd tell me either way. Is there still hope?

Congrats. What will you do if you get high tier waitlist and its a choice between them and FSU??

p.s. many people I know who ended up matriculating into USF were some of their final candidates to interview during their respective interview years.

For those of you who interviewed at USF, would you say that the closed-file interview makes for a drastically different experience from the standard open-file?

Yes, go in there like you scored a 45 on the MCAT and you are on top of the world. Be humble and be ready to be able to talk about yourself. I.e. carry a conversation yet know when to shut up. Practice this interview as it is very different form open file.

Be preparred to bring things up and talk in the dead of air. IMO I think this interview is much harder than open-file.

Personally, I liked the closed interview. I felt like my interviewers got to know me without any bias. I especially liked the interview with a current medical student because it was an opportunity to learn more about USF from a student's perspective.

Haha, great question. I've been struggling with that one all day. Despite some of FSU's issues, I really like the school, for largely personal reasons. (For example, it is just over an hour away from my entire family and the house where I grew up.) I also absolutely loved Penn State...but money is an issue there. Bottom line though, no matter what happens at USF, I'll be very happy wherever I go.

As for the scenario you presented, that certainly does present some problems, but I'm hoping things will work out.
I have to decide whether to give my boss a two-week-notice at my job, around the first of May, if I'm going to FSU.
I have to find an apartment in Tallahassee before classes start.
Probably the biggest obstacle, I have to arrange financial aid.

Because I'm very happy with FSU, my approach for now is to go forward as if I'm going to FSU. I'm going to continue looking for an apartment and continue to prepare to move to Tallhassee in 4 weeks or so. I'm hoping that I'll either absolutely love USF, like I did Penn State, or I'll absolutely dislike it. I know that the most likely scenario is that I'll find that I could be very happy at either place, and I'll just have to make a quick decision if I'm luck enough to be accepted to USF.

High tier waitlist would be nice....but a direct acceptance would be nicer wouldn't it? That's still a possibility, so for those interviewing at USF next week be on your A game. Spots open up when people drop their acceptance especially now that we're getting down to crunch time regarding multiple acceptances.

Oh there was a specific reason I asked him that. He knows why. If it was USF and some other school, I wouldn't have asked the question. It was because of other recent things I was told about FSU that I was asking that. People who I have talked to through PM know what I'm talking about.

Send me a PM with your email and I'll send you the file I had copied and pasted all their questions onto. Most of the questions are on there from people's posts and the questions from this year were the same ones I had from a lot of the last year's so if you want it as practice go ahead and I'll give it to you.

Just be relaxed, confident, and be able to articulate your thoughts maturely. Those are the most important points more so then whether or not your opinion matches theirs.

Drastically different? No. I presume the idea behind closed file and standardized question set is to set aside any bias so that you can get to know someone personally. For me, I don't think this was a benefit. I have a non-traditional background. I would prefer to add to my other materials and answer any questions that weren't apparent on my application (each interviewer in my other interviews had their own question or two that I didn't anticipate). That, to me, is better than starting from ground zero.

I'm really splitting hairs, though. The interview serves roughly the same purpose as anywhere else.

How much do you pay for rent ? Do you have enough money to survive and live in a nice apartment ?

Please discuss the costs of living and how they relate to living near USF or in South Tampa. Is South Tampa worth the extra money ?

I think you'll get much more feedback in the Allopathic Class Threads. Many of the posters there in the USF COM 2012 have the same questions and probably have a ton of answers.

You are asked after each interview if there is anything you wish to convey to the ADCOM so you may add things you left out of your application.

South Tampa is worth the money if you like the atmosphere. It's much more trendy and convenient to going out to bars and clubs. I'm not into that scene so for me it's not worth it. Others will tell you the opposite. I'll stick with suburbia in north Tampa.

Can anyone suggest any really good churches in the USF area ?

There is an active Christian group at USF (Christian Medical Association). There are many good churches, and you'd get a better response if you posted what area of Tampa you're thinking about living in.
 
any new details from uf, usf, or fsu post interview? any waitlist movement. i know uf is sending us stuff this week. does anybody know when?
