Florida Schools Application Thread (2008) part 2

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
what GPA/MCAT makes you competitive for FL med schools, generally what's the easiest med school in FL in terms of lower requirements still grant an interview...just wondering since all you already applied and stuff, good luck and stay positive to those that are still waiting...good things come to those who wait🙂

Buy the new MSAR when it comes out and you will be able to get all of this data in an easy and organized manner. This application process is a total crap shoot. Best of luck!

You will need at least an MCAT of 30 and a GPA of 3.5 to be considered at the Florida allopathic schools. They are all competitive. If you are looking for something with lower requirements, apply to the osteopathic programs.

I really appreciate all the help extended to me. Im still not sure where I will be the happiest, since both schools offer me very different things. :scared:Any more info on choosing between UF (alma mater) and USF (home) would be much appreciated!!! best of luck to you all!!!!!🙄

I think you should definitely stay home and go to USF. (I'm waitlisted at UF!) Seriously though, best of luck with your decision. You'll get a great education regardless of where you are. (But USF is definitely the place for you!)

bwahahaha SillyMeMD might have to beat you up cuz going to UF would free up a spot for her at UF.

You probably have a shot with high 20s also if you have a good GPA and good extracurriculars. At the same time though, don't get your hopes up. Keep in mind that if an average MCAT score is something like 31, then for every 36 that is accepted there are several 29's and 30's accepted.

 I know you meant USF. yhpadyffal good luck with whatever school you choose (but UF might be the school for you. :meanie: Just kidding) Just like everybody else has said, go to the school were you will be happiest. After all, you'll be spending the next four years there. I'm sure you're taking everything into consideration. Good luck! :luck:

God my keyboard was probably having issues or I was typing to fast. Yeah I meant you are waiting for USF!!!

I have read great things about Acland's DVD Atlas of Human Anatomy.

Does anyone have any comments about the value of actually spending the $165.00 to own these videos ?

As you can read, yhpadyffal, SillymeMD is kidding that UF is the school for you. Hence, she believes USF really is the best fit! Good luck! Let us know what you decide!

SillyMeMD, jk too! Good luck to you also.

The kidding part was actually referring to me being obnoxious. I'm on the USF waitlist so I think UF might be better for yhpadyffal. I should've stated that better originally. Jokes aside, I still wish you the best of luck. :luck: By the way, I spoke to Leila Amiri at USF this afternoon and it seems like the waitlist is slowing down. 🙁

What exactly did she say? When I spoke to them last week they seemed to think they would still get the volume they thought, but it just might take longer. Did she still seem to be of this opinion?

I hope that there will be more movement! She gave me the impression that the majority of the movement has already happened (which I'm hoping that's not the case obviously) because it seems like so many people are happy with USF. Then again...people may be waiting on the other schools to open up a spot for them.

Eh, never heard of it. There are loads of free dissection videos and more in the basic sciences link at the top of the allopathic forum. Your money would be better used elsewhere.

Silly me applying to and getting accepted with a 3.45 GPA.

Although, deuist is close to right. That's near the beginning of the competitive range.

To clarify things, this year the USF waitlist has not moved as much as it traditionally has. The exact reasons for this are not clear to me or the admissions department. This is not to say that further movement won't happen, but rather to give you all a realistic idea of what's going on at USF. I bring this up because I remember being in your shoes and I appreciated not being left in the dark about what going on, good or bad.

To clarify to those reading this thread whether lurkers or posters alike...

I never said I got some file from some official in the USF adcom office. I think I posted that I had the interview questions in a word document. What I meant by that was that I collectively copied and pasted those questions that were on people's links so that it would not be a pain in the butt having to click link after link of SDN interview feedback.

I just put everyone's collective posts together in one sans the extra info they put in their posts. Although they have been real interview questions, one does not know whether or not they will be the ones asked to you on your interview day and it has come to my attention someone thought I was distributing confidential information but it seems that this is public knowledge by the site since interviewfeedback is the source all students to go to get sample interview questions. Ok that's all.

has anyone heard anything from UM recently?

NONE 🙁 I am getting so anxious. I drove by Jackson today and almost pulled off to go harass admissions. I'm glad I fought the urge.

Haha, I wonder if they're just behind or if they're out of spots? I heard Dr. Hinkley was out earlier but dunno. By the way, which high school do you teach at if you dont mind my asking.

If both USF and UF have been slow so far this year, it doesn't surprise me that it is the case with Miami as well. To be honest, this is a rather odd year with regards to waitlist movement. In the past most everyone who was on the waitlist in the high end of it for USF made it off and those who were posters on here in the past on the waitlist for UM were mostly getting off the waitlist. Not sure why it is so slow this year.

yeah but you are a non-traditional applicant. A little different.

Thanks for responding Mike. Hopefully we'll see some more movement soon. I'm dreading the fact that I have to get my apps out for next year (again) just in case. 🙁

That makes it all the harder, not easier. While exceptions exist, you still have to do extremely well in postbac and MCAT especially to stand a chance as a nontrad.

A lot of nontrads I knew had 2.5 GPAs as ugrads before going off to work. They really had to nail the MCAT and get a high Postbac score to do well.

In the C/O 2009 crowd there were several people 30+ years of age and over nontrads. 1 person had a 34, another had a 35 of which both originally had 2.5 ugrad gpas and had a 4.0 or close to it for postbac. Another person had at least a 28 which was competitive back then when the averages were just a tad bit lesser then now by 1 point or 2 at most.

Of those I knew from last year's cycle one had a 33 another had a 28 but a 3.7+ GPA with a RN. Both of them used to post on here. Another person I knew that was a nontrad had a 37 and recovered from a 2.23 GPA and 8 Fs to getting almost all straight As for 3 years after going to the navy to get himself some discipline. LOL. He graduated with Mikedc but decided not to stay in Fl. for residency as Mike did.

These are just a few I can think of off the top of my head. There are other cases where people had at least a 31+ score who were postbac.

The point is nontrads tend to have to do higher and beat the curve a lot more often then not and have it harder then someone who is straight out of college, not necessarily easier.

Few people I've known have gotten away with lower scores and most went DO route. Only one had a 24 and got into 3 out of 4 Fl. schools back in Mikedc's cycle. She was an RN of 10 years and got lucky to some extent. Today if she applied with a 24, regardless of her nursing background I don't know if it would fly due to the level of competition.

exactly. Makes up some for your lower gpa(but not in all cases). Interesting Guju, thanks for the insight.

I thought 31 was average for matriculants? Doesn't matter anyway. The point is, those GPA/MCAT marks are a decent guideline but aren't absolute. If you are a pretty generic applicant (traditional, average PS, average LOR, minimal activities outside of medical volunteering), then a 3.5/30 would not be so competitive.

Wow. Congrats! You've been waiting for that one. Are you dropping any acceptances elsewhere?

I have not had any other acceptances to drop 🙁 I was on the top 1/3rd of their waiting list. What a huge relief to know what I am doing next year and not have to reapply.

That's kinda what I thought! Congratulations!!! Good to know there is still movement. I'm so surprised by how slow it has been this year. But i guess as its getting closer to end of june, it is getting to that point where it is slowing down anyhow.

My guess is that a lot more people were content to stick with a given school then previously.

Hopefully the 2 of you still waiting hear back soon.

D-bone if you've done new stuff i.e. new ECs summer classes, etc. update UF. The friend that got off the WL at UF was updating them constantly. It might work for you too if spots are still open.

I Got The Phone Call From Usf Today I Am In!!!!!!!

Congratulations!!! :hardy: That is amazing! And if I remember correctly, you got the June waitlist e-mail right? (that's the one I got! 😎)

Good luck to everyone else waiting! Hopefully the good news keeps on coming. :luck:

last i heard, class was full...but i guess that's been the case since may 15th. so i guess this reply is just taking up space.

Ya I got the email that said they would let me know by the end of June. Hopefully things keep moving for all of you guys🙂

the class will always be full
if someone drops a spot, the class is still technically full because someone from the waitlist gets that spot
it's not like they hold spots like concert tickets and release them the night before the show 😛

so we just keep hoping that more people will drop their spots so UM can accept more people off the waitlist

Acually, there were some Miami movement in late May (got off the wait list then).... and I think maybe one person got in early June..... but seems like the majority of the class has been settled for a while...

I Got The Phone Call From Usf Today I Am In!!!!!!!

Congratulations thayman!!! I got that same email a few weeks back but then I was told on Monday that it would be a while IF I even get in. I'm confused. 😕

Did they give you any indication of how far away from the top you were? But hopefully once all of the Florida schools start some more movement you will get called.

I was told that I'm somewhere in the top 1/3 of the waitlist where it is right now. But since the movement isn't what it was like in the past, she didn't sound very optimistic.

You are missing the point. his post was just saying that it is full as in no more waitlist movement because people who were initially accepted seem more then happy to stay there. But thanks for sharing the obvious.

In the past 31 was not the average at most schools, 29-30 was the average at the other 2 big Fl. schools, UF had the highest average, and FSU had the lowest average. in just a few years, the trends hae been one of increasing averages.

My point was that nontrads don't have it easier. They still have to do better and beat the curve.

Two people who post on this board withdrew from their spots at UM last week, however, the admissions office says there has been no movement lately. Which means they are currently deciding who gets the spots. IMO, he didn't really make a point.

Well he was just stating what he thought was the case. I guess you could say that is news to all of us. Because this is the first we know of this, and he was just expressing his lost hope at the fact that it seems that there is't as much movement as he was hoping. 🙂

if both of you are on the list, then I wish you the best of luck.
