Florida Schools Application Thread (2009) Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey Mike, are you in rads? I think I have an interest in radiology (after volunteering in the radiology department at a local hospital).

Do you know what I should do to figure out if this is a viable specialty for me? Are there ways to start looking into radiology now to see if it looks like a specialty I might like and match into?

Hey Pianola, i saw that you've been accepted to a few Florida schools. Which one are you leaning towards?

miami's patients are an extension of latin america..... it's students are ppl from the northeast that wanted warm weather 😱

I'm still deciding. I haven't had a chance to send in my FAFSA yet. I've been accepted a few places out-of-state, too. I guess I'm just not sure yet.

Not mike, but here's my take:

Short of shadowing prior to attending medical school I can't think of much that I imagine you can do. I would see if some of the academic physicians in both general radiology and interventional radiology would allow you to shadow them or their residents where you are at since I know you are near a medical school.

Also, i believe Mike matched into Radiation Oncology not Radiology.

Oh thanks for the heads up. Yeah, shadowing sounds like a good idea.

Has anyone else other than myself pretty much decided on FIU and got in?

Cynical, but not that far from the truth for maybe 33% of the students.

I am in radiation oncology, not radiology. Most people incorrectly think they are similar, but they are very very different.

Advice for anyone who thinks they might be interested in a specific field would be to shadow as much and as often as you can, preferably with different doctors within that field. Lots of medical specialties look enticing on the surface, but may be very different once you spend a lot of time seeing all of the nuances. There's really no such thing as shadowing too early.

mikedc813: I am a volunteer at Moffitt in the MRI, so maybe I have seen you around. I willing to buy you lunch, if i can pick your brain for a bit

I'm looking for a good general/trauma surgeon to shadow, just to see what the actual day in the life of these types of surgeons are like (Can't trust what I see on tv) down here in miami. Anyone got any suggestions? I have emailed a couple but obviously docs are busy and don't reply as quickly. 😀

For those of you already accepted to FSU do you mind me asking what your mcat scores were? how long after the interview were you accepted? what about those of you put on hold?

I'm not at Moffitt much this year since I'm doing Internal Medicine for my prelim year. We can talk over the phone if you want. PM me with your #.

Maybe the class of 2013 just isn't as cool haha. I have a question for you guju, what's your plan? Are you in med school? Applying? You seem so knowledgeable about the florida schools/in general and you always hang around these parts, I've always wondered what you're doing if you wouldn't mind sharing =)

I thought I stated it earlier in this thread, but I did apply this year. I've heard nothing though from any of the schools yet except a few rejections so I'm applying to SMPs as we speak and hoping to hear back at least from one of those programs and to reapply next year. But whatever. I guess I do what I gotta do.

Ah sorry to hear that. You may have said it earlier in the thread but I think I missed a number of pages in this thread at some point so I must of missed it. Which SMPs are you thinking of applying to? I've heard some very good things about USF's. Regardless I hope you'll hear something this cycle, you were very helpful to me while applying this past year (you read the first draft of my personal statement and told me it was crap hehe. I had a different name back then though).

Also since I've been accused of being too SMP happy only last year, I'd like to throw in that USF's head of admissions committee, assoc. director of admissions, and former director of admissions now UCF director of admissions all told me to do an SMP if I don't get in this year based on my file. That's why SMPs if I don't get in this year. This was at the beg. of the app cycle too when they told me such. So whatever. I'm not too hopeful as it is Feb. I'm just going to get my apps in earlier next year and get in an SMP hopefully to increase my chances.

Talking to yourself guju? Just kidding. 😛

No I was further adding to what RSAgator posted because Zeke has accused me of being too SMP as of last year's Fl. thread. So I was just explaining, but I know you were kidding.

How goes it in Miami??? Hopefully well!!
Oh, all I meant by that is that SMPs aren't for everyone - because while they are very helpful for certain weaknesses/holes in an application, they aren't as helpful for others.

I thought we cleared this up last year?? 🙂

I suppose we did but I didn't want there to be any confusion. Was not trying to take a jab at you specifically. Just saying because there are others who don't know my situation who might assume and say the same thing esp. here on SDN. So thats why I didn't say names. Sorry wasn't making a personal attack on you.

Just saying to clarify things.
No worries, I'm not upset.

I am thinking of doing a SMP at USF, which one would you recommend?

I have a question about the SMP though, if i stated on my next cycle AMCAS that i am doing a SMP. Do I have to finish it before entering medical school? or can I just stop once i get an acceptance, so i can take a break.

I know that FSU require you to finish the SMP degree before entering FSU COM. Does anyone know what other schools that do this also?

I was just accepted to FSU COM with a 25K. But I'm from a small town, want to be in primary care, undergrad at FSU. I interviewed on 1/30 and got accepted 2/11. They told me at the interview that their not accepting to many people right now because they have already given out about 60 letters (class of 120). but last year I think they wound up giving out about 220 acceptances to fill all the seats. I've interviewed at other schools that shot me to the wait list (no doubt becuase of my MCAT)and FSU could care less about your MCAT, their more interested in you being selfless and able to hold a decent conversation. I mean this from the bottom of my heart, good luck to all those out there attempting to squeeze through the bottle neck. At a point, this process is beyond your controll (which is the roughest feeling in the world). Much love. FSU c/o2013.

most schools don't require you to finish your masters or smp. if they do, they will explicitly state it in some document. 1 of the schools i applied to stated it on their requirements (i think maybe louisville or something).

I dont think I can do the IMS program, the application deadline is Feb 27, plus the program starts kinna early. I want to spent some time studying for the MCAT.

How bout molecular medicine? i hear that its very popular.

NM I remember your MCAT score now.

For you I'd consider applying to the EVMS BMS program, USF IMS, RFU BMS, and if you don't get in one of those try applying to USF Anatomy program too. I think those are are ones I'd apply to with your stats.

But have you tried retaking the MCAT??? what was the individual breakdown of each section?? PM me if you don't want to say on here.

Sooo I know this is kind of off topic, but I got into UMMSM and I love Miami and have my family there, but I also have a (very late) interview coming up at Albert Einstein COM in early March (granted I might not get in, but I'm looking at this from the perspective that I will get in just for the sake of figuring this out).

My #1 concerns are quality of education/reputation of school... do you guys think that UM and AECOM are so similar that it wouldn't matter which school I chose in the end? Because if they're that similar, I'd really like to start apartment hunting in Miami soon regardless of AECOM, but if it's a big difference...well, then I might have a big decision to make. Thanks in advance! I'd appreciate any advice that any of you have to offer!

(PS there was a AECOM vs UMMSM thread a few yrs ago that I saw, but it seemed noone knew enough info about both schools, so I'm trying again here, although I figure you guys would know more about UM than AE as this is a FL schools thread afterall)

I think that both are great schools and given the choice I'd rather stay in miami for med school and go to NY for residency if I wanted to later. Coincidentally, I have an old friend that went to Miami for med school and started residency this year at AECOM.

That said, I think both are on equal turfs. both are in big cities and deal with a variety of different and unique cases with very reputable hospitals and clinical training, both of them have a pretty big degree of research, etc.

I personally do not believe one will out do the other to such a degree that you should feel the need to go to the interview if it is really not a top choice in terms of location and support system.

I think that if you could see yourself spending 4 years in NY, 4 years away from family and friends, 4 years incurring more debt then you may at miami despite Miami's high cost (since Fl. residents get some degree of a break compared to OOSers), etc. then its worth it to go. if you feel that you will have regrets of at the very least not seeing what the school was about then I say go for the interview. If none of that is the case then I say cancel it as they'll give the invite to someone else who may need it more. But you earned the invite so you have to think of what it means to you personally.

I know personally that most of my friends have gone to all interviews even if they had a top choice at one point which they got into because sometimes it is really in the interview which can sway a person to choose a diff. school then the one they initially thought was their first choice. They see a diff. side of the school after actually going there for the interview then what their initial perceptions are. You might want to go just for that purpose because you never know. but again its up to you in the end. Good luck with your decision, and remember that both are great schools that will get you to your ultimate goal with a very good education.

Thank you so much. I will probably end up at UM (90% sure), but I am going to go to the AE interview just to check it out. Very good advice 🙂 I honestly can't see myself in NY incurring all that debt and whatnot, but I think I'd regret missing out on an interview that might show me another side.
Again, thanks! You rock!

They are all very good, but as you said, are very busy.

The main issue is getting access since security around UM is quite tight. It may not be worth it for just a couple of days.

I actually think the AECOM has some good things to offer and it really depends on what you want. Honestly, you can only make decisions based on what's available to you. Currently, you're accepted to UM and I'm guessing if you have other acceptances that it is your first choice. In terms of apartment hunting, wait till May/June when Agnes puts out the listserv. Honestly, most places you go now are going to want you to put down for an apartment that you are ready to move into in 1 month (2 months AT MOST though unlikely). That being the case, you have time. If by June you still don't have an acceptance from AECOM or you're waitlisted there, remember you only can make decisions based on what's available to you, so just assume you are going to UM. If you get off that waitlist or you are accepted then you can go to Einstein. And if for some reason it's around June and you put down $$, with all the loans we have $2000 to lose is worth it if it means you'll be happiest somewhere else - if that turns out to the case. I've heard tons of stories and I even signed a lease somewhere else with a $3000 check that was returned to me 24 hours later when I realized I was accepted to UM. You'll be surprised what happens. Do what's right for you.

BUMP!!! What's going on with my Fl peepz??? For those of you in the Tampa area, if you haven't been to any of the previous Body Worlds or Bodies...The Exhibition displays with the plastinated cadavers and what not, they have the Body Worlds 3 display in Tampa right now at MOSI!!! I went yesterday. It was pretty good but I'd also seen the Bodies Exhibition one too last year.

Florida representin'.

I thought I'd throw in my two cents regarding the whole UM vs. Einstein thing. I'm currently accepted to both and will almost certainly (99%) be attending UM in the fall. Both are excellent institutions that are very similar in many ways as Guju has mentioned, with Einstein probably having the edge in terms of prestige. I applied fairly geographically (mainly to Florida and New York schools) because I figured I'd either want to stay close to home or go to an awesome city where I have some family. That being said, while Einstein is fairly close to Manhattan, it's far enough to be a bit of an inconvenience, and the immediate area around Einstein is incredibly lackluster and pretty miserable.

At the end of the day there were a number of things I personally considered. I felt that

1) the reputation of Einstein, while better, wasn't so much better than Miami to make it the obvious choice.

2) The immediate area isn't too interesting, making it a 30 minute trip to the city/civilization, something that to me would get very old very fast.

3) The weather. It would be one thing to trade the sun for the cold and Manhattan, but trading it for the cold and The Bronx seemed like a pretty weak trade to me.

4) The money. As a Florida resident UM is about 10k cheaper/year, and that's a decent bit of scratch. I'd maybe consider paying more for a school like NYU, Sinai, Cornell, or Columbia where I'd be in a desirable location, but not for Einstein.

That being said, if you're thinking you might really like it there then go for the interview and make a bit of a vacation out of it. What's important to me may not be important to you, but I've asked this question to a few people and it's always good to hear other peoples' opinions.

Sounds like a lot of people applied to Einstein. Can I ask what the appeal of Einstein is? (Just generally). Is there something specific about it that would make Floridians apply there?

So on the Einstein issue, it is in the middle of the Bronx which is supposedly one of the worst parts of NYC.

Dunno if I would call it the middle of the bronx, I think it was more like the edge of the Bronx (could be wrong though). The area is pretty bad/lower income but I didn't feel unsafe getting to my interview.

As for why people apply to Einstein, it's a good school and I'm sure I would be very happy going there, it's just that I'd be happier going somewhere else. The truth is that you can't really know what the area is like without visiting, so I think a lot of people from Florida who apply to schools on the east coast apply there envisioning it to be something it isn't. There's also no essays on the secondary, and it's not as competitive as some of the other big new york schools.

As I said earlier it really is a very good school, and I'm sure there are PLENTY of people who would take Einstein over any of the Florida schools. In fact I have friends who think I'm crazy for leaning towards Miami. At the end of the day things that are big negatives to me may not matter much to someone else, as with the positives.

Yeah, that makes sense.

I think the debate of UM vs Einstein is a no brainer, esp if UM is cheaper. Take UM and run. Its better location, got the same resources, and probably helps better for residency placements in FL. Also, there isnt much of a difference between rep of Einstein and UM.

Yeah, I kind of thought UM was better reputation-wise, but I didn't look into Einstein that closely, myself.

Gator, r u from miami? the area around jackson is not the safest. i would say is the SAME level of poverty and probably even higher crime than the Bronx.

Yeah, I kind of thought UM was better reputation-wise, but I didn't look into Einstein that closely, myself.

I heard Einstein was ranked slightly better, but probably not by much and once you get to that range of the rankings, alot of the schools are very similar.

For me, I think the choice would come down to location, and in my opinion, speaking from someone that has lived in NYC for the last couple years, Miami is way better than NYC(esp if you arent in Manhattan, which is probably the only good part of NYC). Dont get me wrong, NYC is fun, but its one of those cities where you need lots of money to have fun and even then its mostly for bars, clubs, and museums, which Miami has and more. Also, trust me, Jackson doesn’t compare to the Bronx. The thing with NYC is that everything is so dense that when you walk a couple blocks you can go from a middle class neighborhood to a ghetto, esp in the Bronx.

I think that most ppl that end up choosing Einstein over UM given the same tuition, probably do so it due to family and wanting to experience NYC life(one of the most overrated experiences ever).

Gator, r u from miami? the area around jackson is not the safest. i would say is the SAME level of poverty and probably even higher crime than the Bronx.

Yes I am, and while both Jackson and Einstein are in areas that are similar from a safety/poverty standpoint, most of the students at UM don't live in the area the hospital is in whereas most students at Einstein stay in the dorms.

I'm from NY originally and have lived in NYC and definitely have to disagree. There are nice parts besides Manhattan. Queens has some very nice parts, for example Astoria, and you can be in mid-town within 10-15mins from there. Brooklyn also has nice areas. I don't really have much experience in the Bronx besides going to the zoo. 😛 A large chunk isn't serviced by subways which must be a pain.

Location is a very personal choice. For some the madness and uniqueness of NYC is very appealing, for others it is a nightmare. Some like the heat some like the cold, etc. Choosing between a NY and Florida school is tough for me, but in the end Florida wins out. I like having the outdoors accessible year round. Freezing temperatures get old real quick, I don't need another variable to add misery to my day.

Did anyone recently call FSU for a status update, I called them last week and they told me to email them because they arent doing status update over the phone.
So on monday, I emailed them and I still have not receive a reply. They told me it will take no longer day to get back to me but its like 4 days now.

Anyone have this problem?

... that I was waitlisted at USF. Which is a shame because I really loved the school

Any USF students have clue on how the ranking/acceptance process works?

Also, any tips or ideas for turning the waitlist status into acceptance?

locus what do u mean by status update? after interview or still waiting for interview?? I was wondering if anyone knows how fsu ranks their waitlist, and what i should do now. What they think is appropriate, and if they really review ur application every 2 weeks, or only if you update?

I am still waiting for an interview. I wanted them to know that I was still interested in their school since I haven't heard anything from them in since my secondary was recieved.

Very interesting though, after I posted this message on this thread and FSU secondary thread, I got an email (4 hour later) back from FSU admin saying sorry that my email was overlooked and they are still review my app. Maybe they do look at the thread on SDN.

Ranking is based purely on the average score you receive from the committee members. Once your score is calculated, it cannot be changed. USF will not tell you what your place is on the waitlist. However, REL used to give you a rough idea about your chances. I don't know the policy now.

I'm gonna agree with that. Don't badmouth the Bronx, it has it's good and bad 😉

Snap, way to be in the loop dude. REL = at UCF....

Hey, I posted this in the MCAT forum, but figured you all might be able to help me since you are more familiar with the Florida school.

So I took my MCAT 1/31 and got a 31S--> 9 PS, 11 BS, 11V.. I knew I screwed up PS, I messed up my timing and ended up having to guess on like 6 or 7?

Anyways, I've got a 3.75 overall and around a 3.6 Science. I've got a few leaderships, a year of research to date, 200+ hours of hospital volunteering, TAed a microbio lab, shadowing a pediatrician...

Anyways, my question is should I retake the MCAT? I really really want to stay in Florida, hopefully UF or USF?? Thanks!

How were you scoring on your practice tests? If you were scoring mid-high 30's on all of them then I'd say maybe MAYBE retake. Keep in mind that mentally it's very difficult to start preparing for a test you've already prepared for and taken, and if you don't prepare for it you may score even worse. I think that with your resume you should have no problem getting into USF. UF you're pretty much right at the average so you have a pretty good shot of getting in there too, but there are really no gimmes in this process. Your best shot is to apply early, and I would apply to all of the Florida schools (which I'm sure you planned on doing anyways).

i had pretty similar stats as you.. and i got in.. no need to retake, you'll be fine for fl schools

i had interview invites to all fl schools cept miami

be careful. I have a friend with 33 / 4.0/4.0, applied early, only on the waitlist to UF, with no other interview offers... This process is really messed up.. don't assume you will be fine. He did and now he is considering going D.O.
