Florida Schools Application Thread (2009) Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks everyone. I going to talk to an advisor tomorrow, for whatever that is worth, just to get another opinion on the mcat and my application. Ya, unfortunately there is no certainty in this process!

be careful. I have a friend with 33 / 4.0/4.0, applied early, only on the waitlist to UF, with no other interview offers... This process is really messed up.. don't assume you will be fine. He did and now he is considering going D.O.

You also have to remember that how you write things up on your AMCAS can make a very big difference. Admissions offices read through thousands of applications each season, and if you are not careful and deliberate in how you word your responses and explanations, you can get overlooked, even with great stats.

Case in point - the recruiter at USF where I am at told a group of undergrads about a student with a 43/4.0 that he rejected pre-interview this cycle because there was no depth to his application (READ: no passion or clear motivation).

IT IS STILL AFFILIATED TO USF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UF HAS RESEARCH AFFILIATIONS BUT USF IS STILL THE ONLY SCHOOL THAT CAN DO CLINICALS THERE!!!!!!

Both UF AND USF AFFILIATE WITH MOFFIT FOR RESEARCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get your facts straight. It is still Moffitt at USF. UF is collaborating with them and also has an affiliation just like ORMC has affiliations with both FSU and UCF. The reason UF desired to gain a partnership with Moffitt is because they are in the process of building their own cancer center and wanted to work with a cancer center that has strong research programs and can collaborate with them in the future.

USF and UF both still bear affiliations with Moffitt.

Hey, why don't you have a nice warm glass of calm the f*ck down? K?

Someone needs decaf.

SOMEONE NEEDS TO READ THE POST ABOVE THE ONE THEY POSTED!!! I clarified in there. Get off your high horse.

I did read it and my post and opinion stand. You're way wound up. People don't like being talked to that way no matter your reasons.

Having met pianola in real life, imagining her saying this makes me laugh 👍

lol

Yeah I had some bad news today I guess. It was a little out-of-character.

But also

I DON'T LIKE IT WHEN PEOPLE TALK TO ME LIKE THIS WTFWTFWTFWTF ZOMGZOMGZOMGZOMZOMG BBQBBQBBQBBQ!!!!!! IT IS REALLY IRRITATING!!!! I WASN'T SURE ABOUT THE SITUATION AT MOFFITT WHICH IS WHY I USED THE QUALIFIER "I THINK". USF TOLD ME THAT UF HAD ACQUIRED MOFFITT WHICH IS WHY I SAID WHAT I DID.

Oh and sometimes I'm not a nice person when people e-yell at me. Sometimes.

hey, so I heard UF owns Moffit now, is this true?

...just kidding.

Anyone doing anything fun for spring break? While this entire semester has kinda felt like a break after getting accepted somewhere, it's still pretty nice to have a break from my break. I'm headed to Costa Rica tomorrow, so excited! Anyone ever been? Any suggestions?

Hey that sounds like a lot of fun. My suggestion is to enjoy yourself as much as you humanly can while you can 😀. No plans for me, I guess. Oh yeah, catching up on all the homework I didn't do the first part of the semester 😛.

Get over it. I explained myself and I still stand by my original posts. If you take offense to it then its not my problem.

I absolutely abhor people spreading info around like its gospel when it is clearly wrong and has been established to be wrong on here as Pianola was doing. I hold nothing against her as i've talked to her out of SDN on fb and on here via PM and I know she's a nice person. It was not to be rude.

It was to make it very clear that it was clearly wrong information that she gave in her brief reply and something that people should really look into properly before spreading as gospel.

If you cannot understand that, then that is not my problem.

I don't have a problem. You're the one with stick up the butt syndrome. Like it or not, using all caps on the internet is considered yelling. Even a 5 year old knows that and no amount of protest from you will change that. Just chill out.

I'm rotating at Moffitt now on the medical oncology service. It's business as usual for the USF residents there...

Sorry to have brought up this issue... It was just a rumor I heard at work (two doctors talking about it), and I was using the informed members on SDN as an initial source to figure out the merit (or lack thereof) to the rumor. I apologize for spreading any false information, if I have done so...

You didn't do anything wrong. You even said you heard the information from someone else in your original post.

I'm gonna say that the response to my "Snap, dude stay in the loop..." comment was unwarranted in the sense that I was playing. However, I can understand how if you don't know me you don't know that I'm playing, so I see how both Mike and guju responded the way they did.

BUT....everyone needs to chill. 🙂 Pplz, it's an internet forum and people make blanket statements by mistake. Sorry about the confusion regarding moffitt. Also, it's common knowledge Guju that WRITING IN CAPS SOUNDS LIKE YELLING ON THE INTERNET AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

LOLERSKATES. I'm done now.

Yeah, uh, in that vein...spring break, anyone? 😳

Plans?

Wait USF still is affiliated with Moffitt??

The last time I checked, I'm a USF resident and I am at Moffitt. So in all seriousness, yes Moffitt is a USF hospital. I can't speak for the research affiliations, but clinically USF is affiliated with Moffitt. I'm the Moffitt house officer tonight so I'll let you know if I see any orange and blue strolling the halls....

I'm not sure the best person to ask about any UF affiliations. If I find out I will post.

Hi Mike, I know that Moffitt is in good hands with you at the helm......

As for the agreements, Moffitt is affiliated with both USF and UF. There was a 10 year USF/MCC clinical working agreement signed about ~2~ years ago and about ~1~ year ago UF/MCC signed an agreement to collaborate in some research. MCC is a multi-dimensional, heavily funded NIH, from beginning to end cancer institute and as such is partnering with many academic and other programs to collaborate and maximize their assets. I am certain that you have heard that there has been some constriction in funding whereby the government is funding collaborative research much moreso than singular efforts. It only makes sense. For what it's worth the Burnham Institute is building a fabulous building in the UCF medical city at Lake Nona also has a minor research agreement with UF in the area of diabetes and obesity. You will see loads of these agreements as the scramble for adequate research dollars intensifies. It's for the better.

Thanks for the clarification. As for Moffitt being in good hands, this will be my "home" in a few months when I start rad onc so I'm trying to make a good impression on the staff early on. ;-) It's a great place to be.

I finally got an interview at FSU, on April 6. anyone here will be there?

Any good hotels around the campus? PM me if you dont want to say it on here. Im looking for a nice and clean place 😀

You guys going on medical mission trips there?? Miami students are so lucky to have multiple options to choose for med mission locations cuz at USF it is just the standard dominican republic but nowhere else really.

They're working on that actually. I know of a couple of med students who are going to Bolivia. The International Health Services Collaborative also mentioned Panama as a possibility. At a recent meeting, it was mentioned that USF (I believe it was Public Health) has formed an affiliation in Africa so that may be another possibility in the future. 🙂 And I had to add to the Moffitt discussion...My LCE is at Moffitt so yes..we're still affiliated 😀

Curious, does anyone know the long-term plans for UMMSM @ FAU? Are they partially funded by the state of Florida, and if so do they plan to branch out from the umbrella accredidation provided through UM in the future?

My LCE is at Moffitt so yes..we're still affiliated 😀

My 2nd year LCE was at Moffitt in radiation oncology. It changed my life. Literally! I would have been doing something else now if it wasn't for that experience.

I will be at FIU-COM March 27 for that second look/info session or w/e it is. What do you think they expect us to wear? Full suits like an interview or since I've already been accepted can I be a bit more casual? Any ideas?

I am an out of state student who was offered an interview at FSU. Do I have any chance of getting accepted?!?!

interview generally means you have a chance. Your skills alter the size of that chance 😉 GO! And good luck!

Thank you. I just re-read an email the admissions office sent me. It was a link discussing tuition. Seems if I were lucky enough to get accepted to FSU, I would be spending 80K+ a year. My mentor advised me to just take my acceptance to WVU lol and since he was the one I was going to ask for money to go on this interview.... I guess I have my answer now. I am just praying to get off the hold list at my state school. Quite ironic that I got a few out of state interviews and one acceptance yet I was not even deemed worthy enough for a waitlist at my state school. I do not understand this whole medical school process!!! Best of luck

🙂 I got pre-I rejected from my state school... It was awesome.

Sorry everyone, ignore this 🙂

I feel your pain. Granted I'm OOS, but I didn't get an interview offer from UF, my own school! However, after having scoured the dates for interviews on the wait list threads I realize I must have applied for med school waaaaay too late b/c everyone was interviewing while I was procrastinating secondaries. The only schools I applied to before October were in TX (and I got every interview . . . ) and only because of the Oct 1st due date. :bang::smack: I now spend my lonely nights sobbing and looping Cher's "If I could turn back time" over endless bowls of ice cream.

matchlists.png

Here are the match results for the four medical schools in the state of Florida. I had some difficulty in making this list because Florida State University and the University of South Florida did not list surgery prelims and medicine prelims as a category separate from categorical general surgery or internal medicine. When I calculated the results for the University of Florida and the University of Miami, I included people who were only entering PGY-1's in surgery under the general surgery category. Therefore, the numbers for internal medicine and surgery will be somewhat inflated. I did not, however, include the internships of people who were pursuing PGY-2's such as dermatology and anesthesiology. (Does any of this explanation make sense?)

Using the absolute numbers from each category is misleading as the University of Miami is the largest medical school the state of Florida and will have more people entering most of the fields listed. A more important indicator would be percentages. Someone who is much better at statistics than I am could conceivably run a series of Chi Square tests to determine if there are any statistically significant differences between the lists. From glancing at the percentages, I would guess that the University of Miami has significantly more people entering anesthesiology, ophthalmology, and internal medicine, and has significantly fewer people entering emergency medicine. My guess for the reasons for these discrepancies are:

Anesthesiology---Jackson Memorial Hospital has the largest residency program in anesthesiology in the country and historically takes many University of Miami students. Further, UM students are also required to rotate through anesthesiology before they can graduate.

Ophthalmology---the University of Miami is home to Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the #1 eye hospital in the country. The hospital certainly has a significant presence on campus and is a driving force for many students who consider ophthalmology. Further, second-year students are required to take a two-week course and dermatology and ophthalmology.

Internal medicine---five out of our six deans are internists. I would imagine that has something to do with it.

Emergency medicine---Jackson Memorial Hospital does not have a residency program in emergency medicine. There is little push for students to enter this field, and those that do are often on their own to pursue it.

this decision deadline to hold one acceptance, how does it work?? does everyone know that rule applies, what happens if u hold two acceptances past that date? I also hear that at FSU the deadline is sooner because school starts earlier (i think the deadline is around april 15th) Does anyone know how this works. any explanation is greatly appreciated. Hopefully waitlists start moving!! Anyone waitlisted at FSU and recently accepted out there???

Well if you have multiple acceptances and are going to choose FSU then you have to drop the other acceptances by April 15th.

Wow that's crazy. I didn't realize that FSU could dictate a thing like when you would drop other acceptances.

Can other schools do that, too? I haven't heard about any deadlines other than May 15th (I didn't apply to FSU).

I withdrew my acceptance to the FSUCOM and the UMMSM at FAU this morning. Hope someone deserving is rewarded soon. 🙂

Thanks guju. Good thing I didn't apply to any of those schools. I think I should be ok. I wonder what happens if you accidentally hold onto an acceptance too long. (Or if you do it on purpose for that matter).

Sure wish school could start already so I can quit this wretched job of mine.

If you hold more than 1 acceptance past May 15th, the school(s) are allowed to withdraw their acceptance. So if you try to hold 2 or 3 or more acceptances past that date, all of the schools that have accepted you and that you are holding on to will know, and AAMC allows them to basically tell you "nevermind" - potentially leaving you with 0 acceptances.

Bottom line: You can only have one acceptance past May 15th, but you can be on as many waitlists as you desire until you attend the first day of class..
