Thought the 2008 thread was very helpful, might as well start a 2009 one. Much more convenient than searching for threads on every FL school. Good luck everyone!

This would be part 1 for the new application year then. 😉

Good luck on your applications everyone. Hopefully I will see some new colleagues next year.

Finally, I've been waiting for this thread. I wasn't around at the beginning of the other one.

Good luck FL premeds. If any of you have questions about FSU throughout the cycle, I'd be happy to try to answer them. So far, the school has been amazing. I hope to see some of you here for interviews soon.

Good luck fellow premed florida peeps. Pray one of these schools takes pity on me!😀

my MCAT score is low but im taking a shot at MD, hoping i get a chance.. good luck to all

Question for my Floridian friends: I submitted most of my materials for Florida schools back in July. I've heard a bit about UCF's policy towards interviewing; what about UF, USF, UMiami? Will they contact me 👍 or 👎 about interviewing before October or is it just too hard to predict?

Thanks. Yay Florida! Hooray for state schools! 😀

I know that USF waits to get everything in before they look at your application and decide for interview. So if you got everything in early then you should "in theory" hear something back in October. From what i read on SDN most school dont interview until September. So its all good

Yea it would be for the new application year but it's part 3 for Florida Schools Application Thread. I imagine next cycle's would be part 4.

I started over with part 1 for the 2008 application cycle. There were 2 parts of the 2008 Florida application cycle. There was also part 1/2 of the 2007 thread.

if you had to rate the medical schools in order of prestige in Florida, who would be on top?

I am going to the University of Miami this year as a pre-med but I am just wondering where people would say the best medical school in the state is, in terms of clinical experience, research, location, etc.

There is no "top prestige" school among the florida schools. Each school offers their strengths in terms of their curriculum. UM's strength is the diversity of clinical exposure through Jackson Memorial Hospital. USF's strength is similar. UM @ FAU in Boca Raton offers a more PBL environment which, if you prefer this kind of small group environment, may work better for you versus a more traditional lecture-based curriculum. UF provides tests in computerized boards format in order to prepare you for the boards (although UM is now giving NBME "blueprints" that also practice you for the boards, and some professors are using certain board books and clinical vignettes as part of the class). FSU offers a curriculum that encourages community service and also encourages you to go the Family Practice route.

This is just a small nutshell of what these schools have to offer. It is up to you to look at the differences in curriculum throughout the 4 years, their mission statements, and other important aspects of each education. A good start is by looking at each website.

All-in-all, all of the big 4 will give you a fine medical education. You also should look at the other two new medical schools if you are interested in them.

:laugh::laugh:

Oh c'mon be fair. UF surely has something else to recommend itself besides computerized tests 😉. Boy, UF seems totally irresistible with your description 😀 [Just friendly teasing, of course.]

I simply wish to add that UF is a nationally-ranked research institution.

Likewise, however, I would suggest that there is no single answer for "What is the #1 med school in Florida?" because I'm sure it depends on the individual goals/desires of each applicant.

Well for some people who want to go into Derm, Optho, etc and pray to the USMLE Step I gods, it may be the end-all factor. 😛

Hey everybody! Best of luck with applications this year :luck::luck::luck:

Keep in mind that you are going to med school to become a CLINICAL physician, not a scientist (well most of you are anyways). Research rankings mean nothing about how good of a doctor you will become or how good your clinical training will be. The rankings are largely based on how much funding a program gets.

Strongly disagree! You can find GREAT research opportunities at any of the FL schools. As a USF alum I certainly did and I landed the radiation oncology residency spot of my choice. As a matter of fact, all of the people in my class who applied to derm, optho, and rad onc matched to programs that were #1 on our rank lists last year.

Hopefully I hear back from UCF today regarding an interview invite decision. They said 10 business days after being complete (8/7) so that makes it today! 🙂

Same here, although I thought they said they would reject us within 10 business days, but if we don't hear back that means we are in the interview or might interview pool...

I really meant it tongue-in-cheek. Hard to be sarcastic here.

My e-mail says the decision will be made to extend interview or not in 10 business days. Then they will notify you asap if you were rejected. They said it's better you don't hear anything right away since it probably means an interview, but it's still possible to get an interview that soon as well imo. 🙂

well awesome, hopefully we both have UCF interviews by the end of today! :luck:

Yeah the way I read UCF was "no news is good news". I pretty much inferred that only rejections would be sent out after 10 business days...

Guess we'll see.

Research is an important factor for matching into some specialties. Not all. Some.

I wasn't saying other schools had bad research opportunities. I simply made a statement of fact that "UF is a nationally-ranked research institution."

The comment that you responded to actually had something to do with UF's computer simulations for the USMLE. Not research.

I heard that UF sent out its first couple of interview invites today by telephone. Looks like the Florida schools interview season might start picking up right around now. Oh man, good luck to all who need it! (like me 🙂

That's awesome, I would love to go to the show. I'm a conservative so I like to pretend he's not playing a character, it makes the show perfect:laugh:.

Good luck with the application process. feel free to ask me any questions you guys might have.

Guess we'll see.

You win the master "decypher" award! "No news is good news" is supposed to be the message. The UCF sub-committee for applicant review has "homework" this week and a meeting early next week to select the interview cadre for the first week of regular interviews. I anticipate invite calls to go out mid-week.

Good to see Mike and Zeke still kickin'

Cheers everyone!!

Yay! Here's to hoping for good news from UCF! 😀 My phone will be ON.

UF and Miami have the best overall reputations, but USF receives no discrimination. Going to a large state school doesn't put you at any disadvantage if you do well, because they realize many people choose it for financial considerations. I go to UM-Boca and it will be interesting to see how it will be regarded. Ostensibly, I am a Miami student just like any other, but I don't think it will be possible for us to hide that we are going to the regional campus. FSU, UCF, FIU are interesting because they are new.

Wow how come I never saw this thread before??

Hello Florida people!

I know this is no place to discuss gossip, but I have to find out if there is any truth to this shocking rumor which has spread all the way down here to UM.

I heard that there was a girl impersonating being a 1st year med student at USF COM and was caught not long ago. She supposedly got fake credentials from somewhere and came to class for several weeks before the faculty caught on to her. Anyone else hear this, or is it just hogwash?

When u make this above bolded statement you are referring to the medical schools right?? Not the undergrad schools right??

I'm confused. If u were referring to the undergrad schools then you'd be right on. However, not everyone that chose USF over UM or UF as a med school did so for financial reasons. Rest assure that much. I know people who gave up a spot at top 10 research ranked schools for USF for reasons of better support systems more so then financial reasons, seeing as their families were not exactly the definition of poor. I know several who stated they wanted to be there because there family, familiarity, or other personal considerations that were not financial. So do not imply that. Not trying to attack you. It just seems that your post is trying to imply something not necessarily true.

If you are referring to the undergrad institution, however, that is arguably one of the most cited reasons why people who are Florida residents go there along with family living close by.

Mike,

Just wanted to ask you. Are you still on the admissions committee this year or are you no longer on it since you've graduated and started residency?

Which Florida schools are OOS-friendly?? Thank you!

No that's true..Dr. Specter made an announcement about it and told people to be on the lookout...it helped make interesting an otherwise boring day of orientation

I have no direct ties to the USF admissions committee. I will still be interviewing, however.

I also heard of this. However, she did not go to class for several weeks before her little fantasy was destroyed. It's funny to think she actually thought she was going to trick everyone...
