Miami applicants:
When were you complete and when were you invited for interview (or when were you declined an interview)?

I was complete on 1/8 and I'm still waiting to hear back. Im just curious if people who were complete after me have already heard back about interviews/rejections.

I was complete in late November 2006. I have not been officially rejected nor received an interview invite. I assume that I have already been rejected and they are just delaying the rejection letter to maximize the stress and pain when it arrives. lol :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

this seems quite high to me, but maybe this is common of other schools, can someone list how many were taken off the waitlist from other universities?
so in reality, the admissions initial picks arent what makes the classes so chill, its actually who the admissions didnt pick the first round

At USF, usually half of the 120 students make it in off the wait list. They told us last year it was more like 70 of the 120 were from the wait list. I also was under the impression that this is common among the Florida medical schools.

That is from Hinkley himself in the letter he sends people put on the alternate list. He is talking about REGULAR MD Matriculants. Not MD/PHD, 6 year program, etc.
 
Northwestern has 120 non BS/MD slots. They filled 50 of those from the waitlist last year. My guess is that for high tuition schools like Miami and Northwestern, a lot of people turn down the acceptance once financial-aid mails out the cost of attendance letters.

deuist you are very wrong. That was the official email I recieved when I was placed on the alternate list. Let me paste a few more lines:

While I share in your disappointment at being placed on the alternate
list, you should remember that no fewer than 67 of the 116 regular
matriculants at the Miami Campus last year came from the alternate list.
 
I'll be at the FSU thing on the 24th. Go to med.fsu.edu, and it's in a box on the right to sign up, and then they sent me a confirmation email a week later. It's not for students applying for 2007 (not an option to check when you register) but I feel like showing interest (or being a pain in the butt) can't hurt.

WTF, let me go look at my alternate list letter. Seriously, I don't remember seeing that, but then again I got mine in December. Maybe they didnt' have those stats up by then?

BTW, someone asked about when were people complete... I submitted my secondary on September 11th and got my interview invite on October 5th or something like that.
 
I could swear that it said 67 out of 126 regular matriculants. At least that is what it says on my letter.

I just wanted to comment that it is not uncommon for the florida schools to have such high waitlist movement!!!

Why??? Well a lot of stellar applicants get a great amount of acceptances that they are given a choice of where they go and often choose to go to more prestigious schools over state schools especially if a better scholarship is out there. So you'll see a lot of people dropping their initial acceptances to places like USF and Umiami.

I mean if you had a choice between somewhere like HMS or WashU and USF or Umiami I'm pretty sure the majority of the people would choose those higher ranked schools unless they had a family related reason why they stayed in Fl. So that is usually what happens and why a lot of slots become open and needing of being filled from waitlists.

By regular applicants...they could be saying not "Medical Scholars Program" or whatever it is that Brian is doing. Aren't there like 20 or so of those people?! and there are only 150 at the Miami campus... or 146 admitted last year so that would make sense.

Yay, a Brian reference lol

My hunch is that "regular applicants" might mean students Not applying for the medical scholars program or HPM...but like i said, just a guess...

Unless I am missing someone, about 18 MSP students were accepted in 2006 for the 2007 entering class. I dont know how many HPM students are accepted but it might be about the same number. You do the math, if that makes sense.

Yes as I said before part of it also can do with getting in more prestigous institutions as well as getting scholarships from those institutions.

i am presenting accurate info and i will make sure that it gets presented...i refuse to let information get misconstrued into false rumors and peoples thoughts and opinions as it so often does here.

btw great work giving out advice on the ADCOM thread!!

For what it's worth, each of the Florida schools do take at least half of their starting class off of the wait list each year. A very high percentage of the "losses" at each of the Florida schools is to other Florida schools. Since we interview many of the same pool it's just a matter of time before an applicant gets an acceptance to one of the schools and then makes the best choice for what their priorities may be. Most of the losses to non-Florida schools has to do with decisions to pursue research ambitions, or most often scholarships.

I'm unable to decipher your tone from that sentence. If was meant to be the former case, just note that I consider my advice sound and ok based on the fact that I'm doing nothing more then passing on the information I've gathered from talking to people like REL and other USF admissions faculty as well as people from other Fl. schools for whom I've spoken to at premed forums. I also gather some of my advice based on the large pool of people I've known who've been accepted both here on SDN and from my institution. So I think I've seen enough patterns and trends in acceptances that I know what I'm talking about. While I'm not the expert on everything and if someone asked me about their chances to say somewhere like Cornell I'd probably have no clue, I don't think that means my advice is completely useless because I speak from seeing a wide variety of accepted applicants and their profiles and knowing what adcoms have told several of these people since people often tell me since they know I tend to know a lot about these things. Not trying to be showy and I hope you don't take offense. I'm just justifying myself.

Your tone in many of your posts to me and others on here have often come off as down right rude and like you really need to take a moment to just chill out rather then acting so rude all the time.

If Deuist's information was wrong, yes you have the right to correct him. However, there were much more appropriate ways of putting that information forth and the general tone of your post to him was down right rude. You could have posted that in a more calm tone. Fact of the matter is that most of this does not affect him seeing how he's in medical school and is only doing us a favor by trying to answer our questions on here. If he was wrong then he'll admit to it as he did once he was corrected. People are human to and there may be times when they've misunderstood as he did but that doesn't mean you needed to act in an offensive way.

I haven't really gotten pissed about it until now whenever you've gotten on your rude responses but this just went overboard.

I haven't gotten into main campus (yet - I hope I get in), but you'll find me drinking more often this year 🙂. hehe...Flannigans and Ale House are taking all my money.

no they sent out a rejection today, it had a weird subject line...and im still crossin my finger for main miami campus i think they are done interviewing at the end of march maybe? im not sure

I'm only going to speak for myself when I say that if the thread is titled dear ADCOMM and you are not one, maybe you should refrain from littering the thread with your advice. It's fine to spout the advice in these threads, but people want an ADCOMM's opinion, not a pre-med's even if she has been around people who have gotten acceptances. The only way to keep that thread pure and free from lies and rumors is to restrict the answers to only adcomms. Otherwise, every yahoo on this site could go post "but my friend got in with this or that" or "I heard this or that." That's EXACTLY the kind of thing that thread was trying to stop. You really shouldn't post your advice in that thread. Just my humble opinion.
 
Wow apparently I've missed alot...instead of us working together, there are definately some people in these posts that are taking things way to personally and need to chill out. Keep in mind, there are only a few adcoms who post on these boards and most of us are college kids and the like who are trying to get into medical school...The idea of these forums was for people to share information...Yes, sometimes it is wrong and it needs to be corrected, but that shouldn't prevent an individual from posting. As for people's earlier comments about gujudoc not posting comments---that is absolutely ridiculous...Sometimes the best advice comes from people that have been through it and not people who sit and roll the dice on your application. I'd rather hear from someone that has been through the process any day....Gujudoc keep up the good posts, but that is just my humble opinion

Um, I think you misunderstood. No one was telling her not to post in this thread or any other thread on this board, except for the one that is specifically for adcomms. In fact, I think the first post asks for ONLY adcomms.

There are a few adcomms who have agreed to post advice in that thread to pre-meds who ask for it. So pre-meds ask for it and the adcomm addresses the issue. That thread should be answered exclusively by admissions committee members, IMO. No one else. Otherwise, what's the point of the thread? Guju may have experience and may know a lot, but she's still not an adcomm and therefore cannot answer the questions as well as an adcomm can. Her posts only litter the thread with advice based on personal anecdotes, not based on being there, behind closed doors and weighing in on the future of a pre-med. There's a big difference.

Once pre-meds start answering every post based on anecdotes, the thread pretty much becomes useless. The point was for only adcomms to respond to questions, not others who, however well-intentioned, are still pre-meds.

Even so, I've always made sure to make it clear that I am not on an adcom but I think I am allowed to pass on the exact information that adcoms who don't have the time to post on here have told me. My information is nothing short of what has been advised to non SDN members by adcoms and to me by adcom members and committee members so I doubt that it makes a difference. If they had a problem with it I'm sure they would tell me not to post in there. But whatever.

Listen I've never posted in that thread about issues I don't really know much about such as the advice about letters of intent and what not. But I have spoken on several several several occasions because of my own situation to people about the issues of adcoms advice in terms of postbac and SMP programs and the likes and those people I have spoke to don't always post in that thread even though it is an adcom thread but they either post in other areas of SDN i.e. this thread or they don't post at all because they have plenty of other things to do with their time i.e. those that I have spoken to. Most of my information comes from people like REL, his colleague Mrs. Suzanne Jackson and others at USF COM, or people like LizzyM who also serve in an adcom but don't post on the thread. If you have a problem with that then that is your problem but you know what I always put disclaimers in my posts as to which adcoms I've heard say this or the likes. I'm sorry you find that offending but obviously those who I responded to do not find it offending and that's what counts seeing that it was them who asked the question. I'm not out to get anyone. I was just posting the valuable info I've gathered. I'm sorry that offends you.

That is exactly why I did not apply to that school. They are thinking...um yeah, we rejected you without an interview. You are therefore not worth our energy to type out a full sentence "rejected without interview", which by the way is a totally ****ty subject line... WTF!

And I know I'm not the only one who feels this way, in case you were wondering.
 
Ive been hitting refresh on my email all day long waiting to see that subject line. Oh smug UF, you truly never cease to amaze me. I havent gotten that email yet, they are probably going to hand deliver it to me just to rub it in.

Dude I have never ever ever intended to be cocky or arrogant and if that is the way I've come off to you then I do sincerely apologize. The posts I've put in that thread were because people who posted on those same issues in other threads are not answering it in those threads even though they are on an adcom. Again, I've only reiterated what I've been told by adcom members and cited my sources. I'm not saying that my advice or what I've been told is the word of god as other adcoms will have differing perspectives based on the school you talk to and their way of doing things. I was just giving one school's perspective to the students who asked those questions. I'm sorry you find that so offensive. But REL never posts in there and neither do the people I talk to so I just pass on their information in that thread. That's all.

A few years ago, some friends of mine had a 6 and 7 in their VR section respectively and UF flat out told them not to even consider applying because their scores were too low. At least 1-2 other schools interviewed them. They are now M2s.
 
IMO, gujuDoc is very knowledgable and helpful. Since I have been posting on SDN, she has managed to help me out tremendously. She has been around a lot of premeds and advisors, and thus I feel she has a better understanding of the whole process then most premeds. That being said, I am sure she has helped out many other premeds besides myself and I hope that she continues to do so. That's my two cents on the issue.

I am hoping this whole argument ends. The last page or two have not been entirely helpful because everyone argues overs the littlest details. If someone presents inaccurate information, then I am sure we can handle it like adults and get on with helpful discussions.

ACTUALLY i think i got it, R stands for REJECTED, and IV stands for interview so it reads R w/o IV = Rejected without interview. Real cute subject line dont you think?

I did read it all. I just didn't want to keep going on with the argument (like now) so I talked in general terms. Besides I wasn't in the argument before and really didn't want to bring myself into it by going through every post and replying to specific things. I was hoping that my general statement would just be the end of it, but people just don't know when to call it quits. Now a new argument is brewing...
