This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No problem, I was just curious. Yeah, Im keeping my spot. I hope we both get off the list soon. I only have until June 1st to find out, otherwise Im off to FSU. Have you heard anything about the movement thusfar? Has there been a lot?
yeah, I hope we get in together!!

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

Hey guys!!! I just withdrew from FSU COM and accepted my spot into the class of 2011 at USF COM. 😀 Visiting yesterday with my family and fiance really helped me with my decision. Goodluck to everyone else!!!

BTW I'm withdrawing from GW also.

ANYBODY HEARD ANYTHING AT ALL REGARDING FSU CoM HOLD LIST MOVEMENT YET?

It's getting down to crunch time with 14 days left for them to make new offers from the hold list. And since I am on it and really love the school ... just wondering if anyone has any info!

THANKS! 👍

I withdrew from miami

Does anyone know about the academic calendar of Florida schools, particular USF? I believe I saw somewhere that USF starts on August 13th. How long do we have for winter break (if any)? And more importantly, when does USF end for the first year and how long under MS2 starts?

For those of you who are moving to Tampa for USF, I have attached a document from students about where (and where not) to live in Tampa. I have been here for three years and generally agree with everything in this document. Enjoy!

HAPPY MAY 15th EVERYONE!!!!!

I wonder if they are going to wait until tomorrow at UMiami to move the waitlist after today... although Agnes told me its almost instant.

Good luck with Baylor! Its awesome to be able to make these type of decisions.

we just gotta wait greg....remember my prediction of may 20th...lets see whos closer 😀

And I believe I said may 16th or 17th. For my sake and your sake I hope I am right. 😉

To those of you accepted to FSUCOM:

Has anyone sent in their immunization information as copies of forms received when you were in middle school? Does FSU accept records in this format or must you go get their form filled out and signed by a physician?

Anybody have the link to the thread with all the books people wanted to read before medical school? I searched but couldn't find it. Thanks!

I had my undergrad and high school fax what immunization records they had, which covered most all of it. The rest im going to get today, along with my physical.😀

I withdrew from FSUCOM yesterday,Good luck to evryone in the waitlist.

Hey Miami waitlistees (DrZeke and NervousNed)...in case you hadn't seen the thread looks like the Miami waitlist has started moving...katlady (today) and supamike (a week ago) got in off the waitlist! Both are out of state...Where's the love for Florida residents?!?😕 Don't mind me, I suppose I'm hurt they didn't find me interview-worthy...suppose that's the breaks when you're trying to be the next Duke! But good luck guys...and let us know when you hear!!! :luck: :luck: :luck:

The head of the admissions committee at Miami, Weinstein or something is his last name, said that more people get accepted to Miami on May 16th than any other day in the application season...so hang in there, guys!

I was accepted to the UF COM today around 1p. Good luck to everyone that is still on the waitlists!

Weinstein? You mean Dr. Hinkley?

I'm also hoping to get in off of the Miami waitlist. Ahhhhhhhhh :scared:

No, I mean Richard Weisman (I knew it was something with a W) - Weisman is the chair of the admissions committee. I don't believe Dr. Hinkley sits on the admissions committee - he is the dean of admission, which is different. Anyhow, good luck to those waitng:luck:

And to me....waiting on USF:luck:

Congrats, bball. 🙂 But I have to say that if that acceptance to GW doesn't come with some hefty grants or scholarship $$, I think you'd be crazy to go there over one of the FL schools.

Well actually they are offering me $30,000/year for all four years...a merit based scholarship. While that is nice I think i will stick with USF. I actually just recieved an outside scholarship..a full ride that can be used anywhere through the congressional black caucus foundation. I need to designate which school I will be using the money for soon. Initially I had FSU COM because that was my only acceptance, but now things have gotten quite interesting. USF vs GW? Any thoughts.

Great...well I didn't get accepted on May 16th, so I guess I should just hop off Dominion Towers?? LOL I want to know where you got that info from, because it seems like there would be more movement to follow later on... Anyone get into Miami yesterday?? Where is the waitlist movement thread that you guys are talking about...I need to subscribe to it, so that I can go insane.

bball: Is USF giving you any money? If you go to GW would you get their scholarsip still? Then it would be like getting paid 30K a yr to go to med school! I know several people that go to school in the DC area and absolutely love it. good luck!

I went to undergrad in DC and it is a great place. I've kinda inquired about how the outside scholarship will affect the partial scholarship at GW and the problem is that since the scholarship goes directly to the school any balance left over...which would be the 30k will be kept by the institution. I ran into the same problem in undergrad. I had a partial academic scholarship and a full athletic scholarship. They ended up cancelling my academic scholarship and just giving me the athletic scholarship. Even when I applied to outside foundations for scholarships if they were addressed to my university the fin aid office would apply that to my account and take back an equivalent amt for the school. I could not win.

it sucks, i know, me, you, greg, out of the three of us, none of us have gotten off the waitlist, and we're prettty cool people 😀 😀 😀 , every now and then someoen does pop up on the miami waitlist thread to say theyt have made it, but if may 16th was the biggest movement day, it doesn't look too good for us, can someone check last years miami thread, maybe see when people got off last year? im with you though, im slowly going insane, and slowly hoping i find information one way or another, i hate uncertainty in my life.

I'm slowly resigning myself to 20 months on St. Maarten in the Caribbean. 👎

Please Miami, please!

My statement was not meant as a negative thing...Weisman said that more people get into medical school on May 16th than any other day of the year. Actually, I'm not entirely sure if he was referring to Miami specifically or across the country. Obviously, that doesn't mean that your chances of getting into medical school any day after May 16th (or before for that matter) are all gloom and doom. I'm sure it takes some time to trickle down...it's not as if every time someone withdraws, the school has an automatic form email ready to go out to next person in line. Some people will definitely get accepted to their top choice medical schools between now and August and withdraw from Miami. It just sucks that you guys have no idea where you stand on the waitlist and what your chances are. I definitely wouldn't lose hope...there's still a lot of time between now and the first day of school. Also, since Miami is making a push this year to get its stats higher and, as a result, accept more OOSers - my guess is that some of these high number people will withdraw (more so than past years where the overall accepted stats were lower and FL residents were the majority) and matriculate in the higher ranked national schools.

Tell you what though...you know what does scare me? That the people over on the FSU waitlist thread have an email from FSU admissions confirming that the FSU withdrawals are way down from previous and therefore the waitlist movement is much slower. This scares me only bc my understanding is that the Florida schools tend to follow the same trend. So usually people withdraw from FSU because another Florida school scooped them up...and if they are not dropping, maybe that means other waitlists are also not moving as regular. Very scary 😱 :scared: 😱 :scared:

Damn House and Grey's Anatomy syndrome!

My mom keeps calling me about random stuff. I finally had to tell her to stop, everytime my phone rings I think it's UF.

Good luck to all of you waiting :luck: :luck:
Hopefully you will hear soon.

Agnes isn't even in the office now and won't be back until next week. So I have to wonder how organized things are there right now.

Oh no, you'd be forced to live in paradise! The pain! 😉 j/k

Could someone explain to me the stigma Caribbean schools have? They're still MD so I don't understand it like some people here don't like DO. I wouldn't mind living at all in St. Maarten. In fact, they have a really cool airport right next to the beach and you can literally have a plane landing 20 feet above your head.

The stigma is that... well, the people who go to Caribbean schools do so because they have been unable to get into a US school. It's harder to match into a residency as a foreign graduate than as a US graduate:

As you can see here.

Some specialties are virtually impossible for a foreign grad.

They also cost an assload. Figure on $180,000-320,000 indebtedness after graduation depending on the school and lifestyle. More realistically $220,000-300,000. It's still a worthwhile investment, but it's a lot to swallow. :scared:

I don't think it is that living in a tropical paradise is bad...but I think the problem with some Caribbean or international schools is that their is a very high attrition rate at some. Also, sometimes you can find a lack of options in residency options...my understanding is that they have to scramble after the match and that DO students have a leg-up because they participate in either the DO or MD match...whereas IMG have to scramble for any unmatched positions leftover by the US MD's or DO's. Now, it is true that at the end of the day, IMG are MD's...I'm in Miami and there are so many doctors here who graduated from foreign medical schools. I should also mention that the only doctor in my family is a foreign medical grad (Guadalajara, Mexico) and didn't have a ton of choices in terms of location with his residency, but is doing very well now (ultimately did a fellowship at Emory) and doesn't experience any stigma in his practice. Also, I have a family friend who just finished up at SGU not too long ago and I personally know he called my family looking for help from my uncle (the IMG) with residency, but ultimately got something in GA (was not able to score a residency in FL - his first choice).

Oh wow, all but two of the fields in US seniors had more than 70% matching. None of the "all others" were above 70%. :scared:

Do you think that the US seniors may match better because their schools won't sign off on LORs unless they feel the student can match into it? I know some here have said FSU won't support you if you choose a field that they think you won't get accepted. So you'd be basically forced to apply to a residency where you have a high chance to getting in.

Family practice, according to that pdf file, has a ~98% match rate. I know people have said that radiology and anesthesiology are very competitive, but both of those are over 92%. Not much of a difference imo. I think that would have more to do with pre-application screening within schools, right?

$300k is a ripoff, so screw that. 😛

So I got into UF today, and I think I will withdraw from Miami because of financial issues. But I have one quick question if anyone can help me out. I got a C+ my last semester in a tough genetics course, merely out of lack of studying for the final, but still got 3 A's for the other classes. The problem is, I dont want to withdraw from Miami and then commit to Florida who after seeing my transcripts, doesn't want to admit me either because of the C+. Then Ill have nowhere to go. Am i being paranoid?

You're being paranoid. 😛

Your semester GPA was still like.. 3.5+, you didn't do badly. They're not going to rescind an acceptance after you pay the deposit and such because of a C+

Congrats, by the way. 🙂

Ah, well in that case, flip a coin. 😛

Seriously, I don't think it matters too much. You're getting a free medical school education, so just go wherever you want. You can afford to pick on personal whim, which is an awesome position to be in. How do you feel about another four years in DC versus coming back home to FL? Where are your family and friends living? What is the COL like in DC versus Tampa? It's probably not hugely different since you're a student, but it might be. What's your gut feeling? I don't normally advocate picking med schools based on gut feelings because all else is not usually equal, but in your case, really, you have a total win-win situation no matter what you do. Congrats on that; you're incredibly blessed. 🙂

Hey everyone!! I love you guys!!

I find it very wierd things are quiet here lately, especially in terms of UMiami.
