Florida Schools Application Thread (Part 3)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats soccer!!!! Just out of curiosity, do you know specifically where you were on the waitlist, or just that it was high tier. Im in the middle and I am hoping for a call.

I only knew I was top tier. REL wouldn't give me an exact number but he told me as was at the top of the top tier and that I would most likely get off the waitlist before May 15th.

I wish you all the luck :luck:

Pipedream-- I am having the same problem with FSU's website. It says that a certificate is needed. I was getting on SDN to post that same question when I saw you were having the same trouble. I emailed Jamie earlier today, around 1pm, but have not received anything back.

Anyone have any ideas?

I am on Miami's waitlist. Would they tell you your ranking if you ask them?

You should take that avatar pic down Cubandoc lol. We got owned by the Bulls : /

I will go with the three times champs in two sports in 365 days!!!!!

😀 😀 😀 😎 😎 😎

Anyone going to FSU afraid that it will be hard to specialize? Im worried that if I go in there and say "I want to do surgery" that they will not support me at all with finding research, writing good letters, etc.

Congrats Soccer!!!! Now you can relax and enjoy your summer. You will make a GREAT doctor. Let the party begin! :hardy:

I've been getting in contact with third and fourth years from FSU lately to get their take on the program and the support system in general. Everyone only has great things to say...even the fourth years who have nothing to lose since they are one their way out. Looking at the match list it seems like a handful ddo match in speacialized areas. I doubt they could have done so without support, research opportunities, and great LORs. From going to the second look it seems like you really have to be proactive if you want to do research. I've already contacted one of my interviewers and set up a research opportunity this summer while we are taking anatomy. There are a lot of faculty working on different projects and applying to NIH is always encouraged. It can be done, but you have to stay on top of what you want. Good luck and I hope this helps. :luck: 👍

I agree with bball that it can be done. The match lists do show that some students specialize in other areas. You have to remember that a good amount of the students that attend FSU do want to do FP or IM and that is one reason why there are so many people in those fields. I think you would find support for what you want to do. I can't imagine people at FSU not helping out one of their own students because they didn't choose the path the school wanted them to.

What speciality are you thinking about?

Awww! Thank you! You are so sweet. I think we will all make great doctors because everyone (on this forum at least) is so supportive and nice to everybody else!

Just got this email from Jaime

At some point yesterday the online acceptance web site went down. I
have an IT person working on it and as soon as it is back up I'll send
another notification.

Thanks,

I just withdrew from UF...hopefully that'll free up some space for anybody waiting.🙂

The former president of AED from USF in 2003, went to FSU. He is now graduating from their medical school and will start a surgery residency. Its possible but just a bit harder. Now if you get to be one of the lucky ones who gets to rotate through ORMC I think it will be easier to get into those kind of things. That said, there are many who went into EM, Surgery, and some in Anesthesia from FSU match lists. What I think will be harder to get exposure to is things like Radiation Oncology or some of the more uber competitive fields. But again I think that will depend on where you get assigned for rotations and how much personal initiative you take to get opportunities in such. Perhaps if your main rotation site doesn't have something you are interested in you can ask to do an off site rotation elsewhere. Like for instance someone at UMiami told me that despite UMiami's great Trauma center they don't have an EM residency so they can spend part of 4th year electives doing away rotations in EM if they are interested in that. Perhaps FSU would let you do something similar. They are also adding new sites for rotations in Ft. Pierce and Daytona so maybe that will help with clinicals too.

FSU website update: the website is back up...I just got an email from Jaime

Congratulations to those of you who got accepted off the waitlist at USF!! You must be thrilled. I am on the waitlist right now and was told I would hear sometime in early to mid June. I already have an acceptance to Miami. If you had an acceptance to both USF and UM what would you choose?

I am worried that if I do get pulled off the waitlist at USF I won't have much time to make a decision!

😕

Thanks in advance for your help!!

If you are happy with either, then pick the cheaper place. I've read up a lot on this stuff and it seems that if you should go where you will be happy. But, if there is no preference in terms of that, then it's about the $$$$.

I got a call fro REL around noon...I've been accepted to USF COM c/o 2011!!!

Congrats! It's a good problem to have. :hardy: Take a few days, talk it over with your family, close friends, advisor, etc. Make a list of pros and cons. The right decision will kind of make itself--that was my experience last year, anyway. 🙂

good job bballllllllllllllllllll 😀 😀 😀 😀

Hmm USF vs. Miami. For as much as people think I'm biased, I'd say that would actually be a tough decision for me. I think both programs have really awesome clinicals. I've heard Miami and USF both have awesome staff and the students seem laid back at both schools rather then overly cutthroat.

Pros of USF:
Cheaper
Diverse clinical settings
The only NCI Cancer center in Fl and Only Shriners
One of the top transplant hospitals
EM rotations which aren't at Miami

Pros of Miami:
Bigger city
Premiere academic teaching facility in Jackson. Close to the med school so you don't have to travel a long long distance to get to the hospital.
Lots of Research Opportunities and outside of what Moffitt has to offer at USF, I think Miami trumps USF big time in research especially with NIH funding though USF supposedly has more NSF funding. But NIH is the big dollars and that's what Miami has which USF doesn't have as much of.
The beach is close by.
Being that it is Miami and a premiere academic hospital, you'll get to see some rarer cases. Probably better infectious disease and international medicine opportunities with their partnership with programs like Partners in Health and other such international programs.

Cons of USF:
You really have to travel a lot because all the hospitals and facilities are spread out.
Not as much research though it is great for people wanting to be a clinician.
Tampa is a more boring city though it is supposedly the 5th most diverse place in the nation. I tend to think there's a lot less to do here then Miami and you really have to dig around to discover the hidden treasures that Tampa downtown has to offer because most people including those who live in Tampa don't know half the places around here, whereas Miami is really well known.

Cons of Miami:
More expensive unless scholarship is offered. If you aren't a big city kinda folk and didn't do the Boca option, then you will have a hard time getting used to the atmosphere.
A few of the rotations USF has to offer, Miami can't offer like EM because even though they have an awesome trauma level 1 unit they are under probation.

Pros that are unique to both schools:
Friendly atmosphere
Friendly faculty (from what I hear from others)
Both have unique curriculums that don't shove down the worst of med school from day one but ease you in at the beginning and then take a systems-organ based approach to teaching.
Both are above the national average on the USMLE step 1 and both main campus and USF have almost identical passing rates and the same averages in their step 1 scores. The boca campus was slightly higher and on par with what UF claims is their average.

Personally I think it comes down to location and curriculum and a few of the other things I mentioned above. Good luck with the decision.

I have until May 15th to make my decision. I graduate May 12th and won't be back in FLA til the 13th. With that being said I have already planned to revisit USF COM Monday May 14th to make my final decision. REL has okayed this idea. That's cutting it close...but thats the best thing I can come up with. Hopefully I will see something that completely captivates me or completely turns me off...none of that in between stuff. That way it will make my decision-making go a lot smoother.

Thanks for the support everyone 🙂

Boca will take some getting used to as well. The area reminds me of a country club, but you have to be careful of the people. I love the food that may of the restaurants offer, but the South Florida a-holes can make dining out not so pleasant when they're yelling at the waiter for no good reason.

Congrats and good luck picking a school! I am sure that you will make the right choice for you! I think it is a great idea to go and revisit the school to help you out with this choice. Choosing between two good medical schools is not such a bad place to be in 😉

Congrats bball. I think we all know you are going to USF! its a great dilemma to have and congrats again!

That sounds great!!! I bet its tough to decide. I am sure you'll make the right decision.

Deuist,
What I hear about Boca reminds me of Bradenton/Sarasota area for some reason.

Has anyone recieved updates from REL yet? He said he would keep me posted on how the waitlist was moving, but I havnt heard anything yet. I even tried emailing him, but no answer?

You should definatly call him. When LTD got the call from REL a few days ago I called REL because I was also upper high-tier waitlisted. REL informed me that I could hear as soon as may 1st or as late as May 15ish. That was helpful for me. Turns out the wait wasn't long at all. He's really nice and tells you the straight truth and won't be annoyed by ur phone call.

I find him difficult to reach by email, but if you call, you will get him right away and he is really straight forward and nice! Just give him a call and ask!

Listen! Do you hear that dripping sound??? That's my heart bleeding for you, living that high life in Boca Ra-tony. :meanie:

I'm gonna agree with Deuist on that one. Dining experiences in Boca have made this Jew cringe. Don't all attack me at once...

Hey Zeke. Hows life in the waitlist? Isnt it great thinking each day could be the day? Its like weekends suck because there is no movement. 😀 It is moving though.

being on the UM waitlist is making me cringe, when are we all gettin in greg and zeke?

Im putting my money on May 15 or 16, but it could be any weekday. Hopefully a surpise comes in the e-mail.

I wish I knew HOW they rank people on these waitlists. Is it numbers? EC's? awards and stuff? LOI? My wild guess is that they use a points system to rank people based on MCAT, GPA, ECs, clinicals... and they add points for LOI, awards, etc. But that is just a guess based on nothing.

This came from gujuDoc's post in Jan 2006:

I met Dr. Hinkley at a couple of Premed forums on med school acceptance. One at FSU and one at USF.

At any rate, he told us the following......

Once they receive your application, if you meet the minimum numerical criteria, then your application is passed on to 3 people where it will be ranked.

It is ranked on a 110 point system in which you can get up to the following number of points for the following categories........

50 pts = MCAT + GPA
20 pts = direct clinical contact
10 pts = hardships taken into account, for which you might have to face and how you overcame these hardships
15 pts = ECs that are not patient care related (this could be research, volunteering, etc.)
15 pts = letters of recommendation

Together that is how they rank you. Depending on how high up your score is, you'll be invited for an interview.

Yeah, I know that they rank people and then choose accordingly for an interview. Now the question is, do they use the same kind of rankings to determine ranking on the waiting list.

The waitlist is already moving. I know more than one person that already got in off the waiting list.

Yeah, I know that they rank people and then choose accordingly for an interview. Now the question is, do they use the same kind of rankings to determine ranking on the waiting list.

Dr. Hinkley did confirm a ranked waitlist at Miami in a 2005 post on SDN, although he did not say whether ranking on the waitlist is any different than ranking on selecting people for interview:

"Hi! Here are some comments/observations from Robert Hinkley:

1. Having to wait on the alternate list does indeed suck. I couldn't agree more. I know some of you are out there waiting to hear from me and I wish I could call you this instant, but I can't.

2. The alternate list here at Miller started moving on May 11. The same thing probably happened at nearly all US medical schools.

3. I notify people initially by email and ask them to write back or CALL as soon as possible so everyone should read their email at least occasionally.

4. We have two campuses. If one is full, I will indeed offer the next student on the list a place at the one that's not full. The student then has two choices: a) accept the place and ask to transfer to the other campus when a spot opens up, or 2) remain on our alternate list for a place to open at the preferred campus. Transferring between campuses occurs in a chronological way. The accepted students who ask to transfer are transferred when a place becomes available before students who ask to transfer later. We will try to accommodate all accepted students before we admit someone from the alternate list to that campus. It is my responsibility that we have exactly 150 students at the Miami Campus and exactly 32 students at the Boca Campus. That's not easy to do.

5. I've never admitted any applicant on the recommendation of any student, either one who has been accepted or one who has withdrawn. I have a ranked alternate list that I am obligated to use as mandated by legislation of the faculty of the School of Medicine. I don't even do this for alumni, faculty members, or other administrators!!!!

6. Most withdrawals occur around May 15 (both before and shortly afterward. But some students continue to hold multiple acceptances well into June despite the AMCAS traffic rules to which they agreed when they filled out their AMCAS application. When they finally do make up their minds and withdraw that creates a vacancy that I need to fill. That can occur anytime up until orientation begins in August.

7. Another flurry of withdrawals occurs when we post the due date for a deposit. At that time we offer a compensatory number of acceptances from the alternate list.

8. Finally, if you interviewed with us, you know from my presentation on the interview day that the chances of being accepted from the alternate list are fairly good, at least eventually.

If anyone has any more questions or comments, feel free to write to me anytime at [email protected]. As you well know, this is one of the busiest times of the year for any admissions office and Agnes is on a well-deserved vacation but I'll try to answer questions as best I can."

Yeah I linked to that post few pages back on this thread. I know that it is ranked. I am curious (and I know they will not tell you this) how they rank people on the waitlist.

Yeah, I know that they rank people and then choose accordingly for an interview. Now the question is, do they use the same kind of rankings to determine ranking on the waiting list.

Yeah I don't think the ranking system I mentioned applies to waitlist. I'm not sure how miami does waitlist.

Okay, just making sure. 🙂 Anyway, probably because of the volume of people who drop on may 15 that is true. I still put my money on may 16 or 17. I know someone who got off the waitlist the day after may 15 last year.

However lets pray that we get it sometimes this week. :luck:
