Floridians: How to avoid melting?

Another fellow Floridan here...

Sarasota is one of the best places that you may see in Florida after Miami. Yes, it's a place full of retired people which makes it silent, yet more secure. You'll feel very lonely in Sarasota first, but then you get used to it. I'd stick with friends alike and make a support system as soon as possible. Siesta Key and other keys are must to see but not at the weekend, many flood into there. You can spend all day at the beach cause the sand is ice cold (yeah! that's amazing) in the heat of the sun. Get your friend(s), drinks (in a durable ice pack), and books, and stay there till late in the afternoon; you'll love it. There's a cute downtown there, in which arts and crafts fairs held several times in a year. Whole foods' a good place to hang out. I'd rent an apartment close to University Parkway (must be around $800/month for a 2-bd-2ba apartment with amenities like hot & cold pools, gyms, tennis courts, etc.etc.) All in all, Sarasota is a nice to hang out for some time, but not for long if you're not at your 60s!.. You'll experience it... (PS. Don't bother with the weather. There're 2 seasons there, summer and spring. Spring becomes a little bit of colder, for a few days, though.)

I'd agree with this assessment except the weather thing.

I feel like last few years have been proven to get colder and colder in Fl. In 2007-2009 winters were well into the 30s and 40s and no longer the 50s and 60s of yester years.

And the last year it was as low as 20s that there was ice on the ground in winter time and on the roofs such that it almost looked like snow. It felt like I was back in Boston during the winter this past winter break.

Hello all. I'm going to be moving from the frosty Buffalo, NY to humid, subtropical Sarasota, FL.

I love to spend time outdoors, but I am pale, Polish, and better equipped for a blizzard than 95-degree heat. Can you help me put together a list of things to purchase or do?

For example:
-Sunscreen that won't feel icky
-Fabrics - obviously lightweight cotton, but what else?
-Bug spray - what works best?
-Car stuff? Dad said to get a reflective dashboard shield. Is this necessary? Anything else?

And girl stuff:
-Makeup that won't slide off after 3 minutes
-Hair - THERE WILL BE FRIZZ. Right now I use leave-in conditioner and anti-frizz serum. Will this be sufficient? I don't like for my hair to be crunchy (i.e. hairspray or gel).

Also, I have a 27-pound puggle, and welcome any advice for her benefit as well.

What's not to love about Florida?! Beautiful weather all-year round! 😀😀

Sooo... IMO none of what you use to taim your hair will be sufficient. If your hair is going to frizz, it's going to frizz. Some days are worse than others. I've been told hairspray works better than gel but it never worked that way for me. Honestly, I suggest you get used to wearing your hair in a ponytail during the worst of the summer - it'll be too friggin' hot to wear your hair down anyway. 😀

It tends to get randomly cold throughout November until March, but it will pretty much be 70+ all year round. You will definitely need to find ONE jacket that you will love to wear during these months. Honestly, a cotton school hoodie works just fine. As for shoes - everyone wears sandals anyway, even during these months. You'll get used to it.

Get a car-reflecting shield. You will be pissed without one, returning to your car after it's been sitting in the sun all day....

Don't think you need to worry about bugspray. If you are concerned about the sun you will find ways to avoid being in it for long periods of time - negating sunscreen for the most part. I'm pale too - which being a FL resident comes as odd. 🙂 For direct sun - like going out on a boat - I like bananaboat. Remember, as a pale person, you can only really tolerate 15-20 minutes of direct sunlight. Then you really need to cover yourself up with something - you WILL BURN.

I would say the beautiful weather all year around comment really highly depends on where you are at.

In Miami it is always warm and even when it gets cold never higher then 50 or 60. but that is not the case in Tampa or central Fl. where while it doesn't snow it gets as low as 20s some winters and def. to 30s and 40s which is still very cold even up here in boston.

secondly, the more north in Fl. you go towards georgia the colder it gets.

I always hate when people post such comments because it is as big of a misconception as it is that boston is full of snow storms when usually they ahve it less worse then middle america.

Yeah but shes basically in Tampa. It'll be beautiful all year round here. There are no consistent times in SF where you can label "cold" - its not like Tallahassee where November to March it will one day be 70 and the next day you walk outside in shorts and realize it's in the 30s. But this also happens in Palm Beach, just not often. Therefore it is best to say the weather is pleasant year round.

Since the OP is from the north the weather is a blessing and wont phase her. As a Floridian anything below 70 is strange and unexpected. If you want to get specific the weather can blow in the summer but there hasn't been a terribly annoying hurricane since 2006.

That's right, for a couple of weeks it gets real cold, temperatures down to 20, sometimes. But, it doesn't last long, only a few weeks. And, it's nowhere around like in the North/North East. Honestly, one would love those times after sweating during hot and humid months.

OP - It's so humid in Sarasota that you'll see your car's tires' breaks will get literally rusty that you can see looking from the side. Driving your hand break on for a few feet will help it get removed, though. One more thing, you need to fix your car's air conditioning, and purchase a new set of wiper blades before coming over to Sarasota. You don't need your winter tires, at all, which is a good thing, isn't it? 🙂

Oh, yeah! We might get flu at 70s, it's real cold, God forbid! 😀

You do realize that I lived in Florida my whole life where I'm moving back to for my research right??

you realize I lived in tampa for 7 years and sarasota for 16 and then again another 1 year and that next year when I'm back in Fl. for my thesis i will essentially be in sarasota right???

😉😉😉

I'm familiar with the Fl. weather patterns and from what I can tell it was not as cold as minnesota or middle america in the winter but it was as cold as Boston in terms of termperature for close to 3 weeks in December. For several other weekds it was 30s and 40s which is like fall weather in Boston where it is still soooo cold you need a decent thick jacket. So I would not assume its 70 degrees permanently. that was not my experience in the last 4 years or so.

Weather patterns are slowly changing and not as predictable as they once were. What I always noticed was that when it got cold in the NE, cold fronts would then be passed onto us.

I think the biggest misconception I ever heard about weather in the south after the permanent 70 degree weather myth is that someone believed that southerners thought that temperature in the 80s was cold.

Okay... great. People have different conceptions about weather in FL. I've lived in Florida my whole life too. You can disagree with my conclusions.

I do believe that it's pretty safe to tell people that Florida has beautiful weather all year round. It doesn't get cold enough to snow. It really doesn't get cold at all. The only thing that's annoying is humidity and hurricane season, where it is still hot, but now wet.

I think that one can safely expect it to be 70 degrees as a permanent average. In the summer it is hotter and more humid, and in the winter it is mild - less humidity, much more comfortable temperatures, extremely pleasant. Very few days out of the whole year will there be an unexpected "cold" day (40-50) or a "cold" week pattern. Sometimes at night. Past Daytona, the weather patterns are slightly different, you're right. It's still hot and humid in the summer, but the winters are a bit colder. Not unusual, but someone in those parts might need a light jacket. Farther north into other Southern states is also a different story.

At least in South Florida the people I know think sub-70 is "cold". This is irrelevant to the OP because most residents don't have a good grasp of the word cold if they've never been to the North. If you spend 99% of your days walking outside in shorts and thinking "oh, it's pretty humid today" and one day it's less humid and slightly chilly..... that's unusual weather.

OP: I thought about makeup, mineral always worked the best for me, I wouldn't recommend liquid foundation.

Just curious, in case...

Yep. I grew up at the edge of the Manatee Sarasota border but I usually spend more time in sarasota then bradenton. We have family friends in both sides of the county lines. And know many doctors from both areas.
