MMWR Recomm Rep. 2001 Aug 17;50(RR-14):1-42.
Recommendations for using fluoride to prevent and control dental caries in the United States. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Widespread use of fluoride has been a major factor in the decline in the prevalence and severity of dental caries (i.e., tooth decay) in the United States and other economically developed countries. When used appropriately, fluoride is both safe and effective in preventing and controlling dental caries. All U.S. residents are likely exposed to some degree to fluoride, which is available from multiple sources. Both health-care professionals and the public have sought guidance on selecting the best way to provide and receive fluoride. During the late 1990s, CDC convened a work group to develop recommendations for using fluoride to prevent and control dental caries in the United States. This report includes these recommendations, as well as a) critical analysis of the scientific evidence regarding the efficacy and effectiveness of fluoride modalities in preventing and controlling dental caries, b) ordinal grading of the quality of the evidence, and c) assessment of the strength of each recommendation. Because frequent exposure to small amounts of fluoride each day will best reduce the risk for dental caries in all age groups, the work group recommends that all persons drink water with an optimal fluoride concentration and brush their teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste. For persons at high risk for dental caries, additional fluoride measures might be needed. Measured use of fluoride modalities is particularly appropriate during the time of anterior tooth enamel development (i.e., age <6 years). The recommendations in this report guide dental and other health-care providers, public health officials, policy makers, and the public in the use of fluoride to achieve maximum protection against dental caries while using resources efficiently and reducing the likelihood of enamel fluorosis. The recommendations address public health and professional practice, self-care, consumer product industries and health agencies, and further research. Adoption of these recommendations could further reduce dental caries in the United States and save public and private resources.

i thought it was common knowledge that fluoride was bad for you..in high quantities. How many people u hear die of fluoride poisoning. How many people drink tap water.

Let's see...

- Information about chiropractic on the front page...check

- Search for "amalgam" turns up articles blaming ADD, yeast infections and citations to Hal Huggins...check

Sounds like a reputable source. I didn't however, find any references to reiki spirit healing, crystals or crazy "root canal" psychos so you have that in your favor.

The water in tap water would kill you before you could drink enough to come close to feeling any effects from Fl-.

From the bottom of the every SDN page: "SDN has communities for every doctorate-level healthcare field."

Notice what's missing? Chiropractic.

you don't have to drink flouridated water....unless you want to keep your teeth

seriously people, that's so backwards to be against fluoride. the ppl i know who never drank flouridated water had rotten teeth and now they no longer have teeth. quick fact: systemic flouride is even better than topical. drink flouridated water over bottled water!! (disclaimer: i'm just a humble pre-dent so i guess i can't command you to do this like a DDS but still its just common knowledge)

Fluoridation Opposition: Scientific, Respectable & Growing

Over 2,400 professionals urge the US Congress to stop water fluoridation until Congressional hearings are conducted, citing scientific evidence that fluoridation, long promoted to fight tooth decay, is ineffective and has serious health risks. See statement: http://www.fluorideaction.org/statement.august.2007.html .

Also, eleven Environmental Protection Agency employee unions representing over 7000 environmental and public health professionals called for a moratorium on drinking water fluoridation programs across the country, and have asked EPA management to recognize fluoride as posing a serious risk of causing cancer in people. (1a)

Last election day, 53 US cities rejected fluoridation joining a growing list of communities saying "No," to fluoridation. (1)

-- The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, Canada’s leading voice on environmental health issues, released a statement opposing fluoridation. (2)

-- The National Kidney Foundation dropped its fluoridation support replacing it with this caution: “Individuals with CKD [Chronic Kidney Disease] should be notified of the potential risk of fluoride exposure.” (3)

-- Researchers reporting in the Oct 6 2007 British Medical Journal indicate that fluoridation never was proven safe or effective and may be unethical. (4)

-- “A qualitative review of ...studies found a consistent and strong association between the exposure to fluoride and low IQ,” concluded Tang el al., in "Fluoride and Children’s Intelligence: A Meta-analysis” in Biological Trace Element Research (5)

-- Scientific American editors wrote in January 2008, "Some recent studies suggest that over-consumption of fluoride can raise the risks of disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain and the thyroid gland"

-- Dr. A. K. Susheela, a leading fluoride expert, explains in a video why US physicians overlook fluoride as a possible cause of diseases commonly caused by fluoride. http://************/Susheela

-- A study in the Fall 2008 Journal of Public Health Dentistry reveals that cavity-free teeth have little to do with fluoride intake. Researchers report, "The benefits of fluoride are mostly topical…while fluorosis is clearly more dependent on fluoride intake."

A Tennessee State legislator who is also an MD is urging all Tennessee Water Districts to stop fluoridation, reported a Tennessee newspaper on 11/29/08. At least 30 Tennessee water districts have already complied with his request.(6)

On 1/5/09, the Burlington Board of Health recommended that Burlington cease fluoridation because fluoridation can harm some people. (7)

On 1/6/09, a Canadian town, Drayton, stopped fluoridation, not to save money, but because it was in the best interests of residents, said the Mayor. (8)

On 2/10/2009 Skagit County, WA officials reversed their 2007 fluoridation decision. (9)

On 3/3/2009, Plainfield, Vermont bans fluoridation. (10)

The Arkansas Oral Health Director is accused of giving eight "false or misleading statements" on fluoridation to an Arkansas legislative Committee. (12)

-- Three officers in the Union representing professionals at EPA headquarters

-- Hundreds of medical, dental, academic, scientific and environmental professionals, worldwide.

Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Arvid Carlsson, says, “Fluoridation is against all principles of modern pharmacology. It's really obsolete.”

Fluoride jeopardizes health - even at low levels deliberately added to public water supplies, according to data presented in a 2006 National Academy of Sciences' (NAS) National Research Council (NRC) report. Fluoride poses risks to the thyroid gland, diabetics, kidney patients, high water drinkers and others and can severely damage children's teeth. (11) At least three panel members advise avoiding fluoridated water.

“The NRC fluoride report dramatically changed scientific understanding of fluoride's health risks," says Paul Connett, PhD, Executive Director, Fluoride Action Network. "Government officials who continue to promote fluoridation must testify under oath as to why they are ignoring the powerful evidence of harm in the NRC report,” he added.

The Professionals’ Statement also references:

-- The new American Dental Association policy recommending infant formula NOT be prepared with fluoridated water.

-- The CDC’s concession that the predominant benefit of fluoride is topical not systemic.

-- CDC data showing that dental fluorosis, caused by fluoride over-exposure, now impacts one third of American children.

-- Major research indicating little difference in decay rates between fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities.

-- A Harvard study indicating a possible link between fluoridation and bone cancer.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a DC watchdog, revealed that a Harvard professor concealed the fluoridation/bone cancer connection for three years. EWG President Ken Cook states, “It is time for the US to recognize that fluoridation has serious risks that far outweigh any minor benefits, and unlike many other environmental issues, it's as easy to end as turning off a valve at the water plant.”

Fluoride in the water is only beneficial to those who are developing dentition (ie - kids). Topically applied fluoride is probably the way to go. Members of my family have dental fluorosis from ingested fluoride and I wonder if they would still have this problem if they went in and only had topical fluoride treatments. It does bring up the question - even if it benefits some of the population, should we continue to fluoridate if it is in fact hurting others in the general population?

This is an example of not knowing how to read research articles. The author cited several research studies, but you have to know what the author's really trying to say. Reading comprehension skills matter.

"no significant association was found between the availability of fluoridated water and fluoride dentifrice and the DMFT in 12 year-old children." - In 12yo children of that area, it may not. If those children ate lots of sugar and didn't brush their teeth, no amount of fluoride will completely fight off decay. The author was probably trying to say that water fluoridation is by itself not enough a measure to prevent dental decay in that particular population, not that it's not good.

I'll take my chances...

commie dentists... one day it's fluoridated drinking water, next it's food lines and state assigned jobs!

This apparently goes back to the 50s, really beginning in the 1940s, of antifluoridationists vs profluoridationists.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink

you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink 😆

< takes a sip of coffee brewed with tap water >

i'm really screwed now, stained teeth AND mongolism/cancer/fluorosis/nail biting/ and whatever the hell else I can make others believe.

dihydrogen monoxide is actually known to kill more than 1000s of people every year.

dihydrogen monoxide is actually known to kill more than 1000s of people every year.

That stuff is evil. We ought to start a grass roots movement to have it banned from the developed world. Think of how much better life would be without it.

fluoridation of drinking water was used by hitler to make people submissive and less resistant to control. for real
