does any one know how to obtain FinAid to attend a FMS (for US students)? and if the 6 year programs are considered graduate or undergraduate for that purpose? thanks

Certain Foreign Medical Schools in Europe and the caribbean are accredited for Stafford Loans. Each school has a designated code that is in the Dept. of Education computer system that most of the banks have. If the code is there, you are set....Check with the schools financial aid office to make sure they are accredited through US DOE...best of luck

Sorry I didn't answer all of your question. 6 year medical schools are considerd graduate programs. I'm in the 5th year of a 6 year school and have used Stafford all the way...Most of the students are European, but a handful of Americans attend and they are straight out of high-school and still qualify for the graduate Stafford...

thank you, I learned from you more than the department of education. are you in the CR by the way? thanks again

The US DOE is a huge bureaucratic place. Sometimes they move slow, or the "right hand doesn't know what the left hand" is doing. My first two years, my school code was NOT in the computer (although they had one) so my loans got really messed up. BUt now when I do my FAFSA, the code pops right up on the screen, so no problems now. I attend school in Hungary. I'm an older student and my wife is Hungarian, so it was not too difficult choice for me. University of Debrecen Health Sciences Center. It was just named a Center of Excellence by the European Commission. However, Its like law school, they let in 130 per class and graduate about 50, its not for everyone, but our grads get good jobs, and most do well on Step 1 and 2. (My classmate just took STep 1 and got 98, but she studied for 5 months straight!) Anyway, just check with the schools office and make sure they have a DOE code, and should be no problem. PS If you are US citizen, Don't let your parents deduct you as an expense on their Tax form. It can hurt (lower) the amount you will qualify for!! Good luck!!

I really appreciate you taking the time to share your information. I found the code for the school and I initiated the process today. Best of luck to you.
