Folinic acid vs Folate

What's the difference? As far as I know, folinic acid is the "active" form of folate, therefore it should be administered in preference of the other in some situations?

Not exactly. Its a reduced form of folate that doesn't require activation by dihydrofolate reductase. Its used in situations like high-dose methotrexate therapy, where the body is unable to activate folic acid due to inhibition of DHFR. Its also used in combination with 5-FU in some chemo regimens, but as far as I know, its due to an unrelated effect.
