Hello I was getting a little discouraged in the library as I was studying for this test...seeing that I have to take it in less than two weeks and I came across this article that helped me....
In the book Facing Your Giants, by Max Lucado, he states, Focus on your giant(s) you stumble. Focus on God and your giant(s) tumble. You cannot fight your giant on your own. You need God to guide and assist you. The Holy Spirit to comfort you when you are feeling down. You need to learn how to transform your mind. Change your thought process and you will change how you view yourself and your situation. Start speaking life over yourself. Philippians 4:13 says, I can do all things through Christ with strengthens me. You have to believe. I cannot emphasize this enough! If you believe in your heart but doubt wants to creep into your mind gate (your mind is your battlefield), ask God to help your unbelief (read Mark 9:23-24)!
Don't let your feelings dictate who you are. Let the Word of God replace every negative thought you may have of yourself. Again, speak life over yourself. I am somebody; God loves me; I am forgiven; God is my helper. The Bible says in Proverbs 18:21 that death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. So, if you want good fruit, produce good thoughts and good speech. Clean out your mind of all old, hurtful, painful and discouraging thoughts.

OP can i get the number to you pot dealer? you must have some goood shiit.

..but seriuosly, that self help..god mumbo jumbo is for imbeciles...you want to be doctor right? not an imbecile?

Crosspoint,

I actually think this messege is very inspiring! I really needed that...today I felt discouraged about my progress and sometimes you need a higher power to interceded on behalf of you...Thanks!🙂🙂🙂

Wait, this guy is not trolling and some of you guys are actually inspired by this? How anyone can go to college, study science, and still believe in the bible is beyond my comprehension.

There is a chance that OP is imbecile enough to have made multiple amount of accs just to be imbecile enough like this. Always be on guard when you see people asinine enough to follow along with stupid posts.

dude, why are you studying if you believe in God? just pray and it will come to you. Oh and if there's a half-life problem mentioning carbon dating on your MCAT, just make a 5th choice that says "carbon dating is obviously false"

I think science and religion can co-exist but I do agree that the OP is a fool. This Max Lucado seems like a fool as well who has probably never accomplished anything in his life. The truth is that the MCAT "giant" is your own beast to slay. God shouldn't and will not help you with this. All god does is offer up opportunities for us to succeed. The rest is up to you. If you can't find the motivation and determination to beat the MCAT on your own, by yourself, then maybe you should re-examine your reasons for going into medicine. I think the MCAT is an important piece because it determines what kind of student you are and how you handle obstacles. God and Christ are not some "heroes" who swoop down in your time of need to save you, you have to do it on your own, it has to be your failure or success. You have been given free will and the consequence of that is you have to succeed and fail on your own with the opportunities you're given.

It surprises me that someone would actually be inspired by that post and isn't independent enough to know that you have to make things happen. Max Lucado seems like a predator who preys on the weak-minded people who are afraid of putting in work and being challenged with obstacles. Instead of telling them to analyze yourself and fix the problem he tells them to concentrate on god and everything will be fixed, sorry to tell you this but that's not how life or god works.

Wait, this guy is not trolling and some of you guys are actually inspired by this? How anyone can go to college, study science, and still believe in the bible is beyond my comprehension.

How anyone can be a functioning person in society and feel so right about knowing anything as to essentially call everyone else an idiot is beyond my comprehension. 🙄

Undoubtedly this thread will be closed rather quickly due to the last few posts.

Oh in a couple of weeks when I get my score back...I will let you know how big my God is.....

People be peaceful.

Don't call each other idiots because you don't agree. There are some very smart people (smarter than all of us on this thread) who believe different things.

Peace.

There is such a thing called "keeping it to yourself" that prevents conflicts. People are saying idiots to OP not because of what he believes, but because of making stupid posts that aren't to any relevance in MCAT forum.

I hope this thread gets closed before it turns into a religion vs. science debate because i feel it coming

I agree it wasn't relevant. But if I posted such responses after every irrelevant thread on SDN I would be busy 24/7.

There's some maturity in saying, "I think this isn't relevant." and then being able to move on without insulting someone.

I haven't called (or "essentially called") anyone an idiot, but I do believe that science and religion are incompatible. There are many religious scientists who are amazing at their work, but I still don't comprehend how they can reconcile their religious views with science.

It's disappointing that the above three are the only relevant and appropriate posts on this thread. This thread is not only unnecessary but needs to be closed quickly because it was never on topic nor should have been posted in this forum period.

Good luck with MCAT studying everybody,

here we go....the never ending battle between science and religion 👎

the OP posted something that he thought would help others and you take the opportunity to criticize. it's much easier to be nice around here than it is to post comments intended to make others feel bad

LOL. Isaac Newton, who lived during a time when evolution or the big bang theory had not been discovered, said so; therefore, I got "punked." How sad. Why did you not choose to quote Einstein? Oh, that's right, because Einstein didn't believe in your type of god.

Please consider a career other than medicine or science. You might make a good televangelist or something.

LIS how do you close the forum....didn't know this would bother many people....

Yea, when you post a thread that is only peripherally related to the MCAT and involves something polarizing you get a lot of mud slinging and name calling. You can't, I would just suggest editing out your posts to just a period until a mod does it for you. Only a mod like SN2ed can close this runaway train now.

Hope this helped,

-LIS

A genius once said science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind (Einstein). I think the OP was just trying to comfort other students who are preparing for this exam in a way that works for him/her-self. Does it conflict with the religious (or non-religious) views of some? Of course. There is no need to bash or insult someone who is just trying to help. If it doesn't pertain to you then ignore it. Insulting someone based on their views is immature. To each his own! Live and let live. Thanks OP, and I will personally apologize for the rude comments made. This was helpful to me and I'm sure many others.

By the way, as a physician you will be treating people with different religious and personal beliefs (you should know this by now). If you can't learn to respect what others believe, please do mankind a favor and don't become a doctor.

Clearly you are the one who has a career decision to make, being the one who is so offended by religion. So hostile and defensive of your point would certainly make you not a "charitable and diverse individual who seeks to help and respect his/her community" which is often sought after for medical schools. Heaven forbid a med school sees a person like yourself who is so quick to judge who is fit and unfit for medical school.

I simply prove you wrong, and you decide to be defensive instead of conceding. Sir Isaac Newton revolutionized the world of science and just may be the greatest scientific mind to ever exist, and you ramble about how you can't understand how anyone can possibly believe in religion after studying science. Newton, being as rational and objective as you can be, did it. Regardless of the presence of other theories, he believed in God and no theory, including his own theories, could lead him astray. If you are so offended by religion, who cares, because personally I could give two sh*ts what you believe in. But I do know when you sit down for an interview with a med school and your interviewer is a practicing Catholic or Lutheran or Jew or Muslim or Protestant etc, I am sure you will be between a rock and hard place being the close-minded individual that you are.

no patient wants a doctor that actively seeks to belittle others, regardless of what they know. adcoms will pick up on this during an interview

this.

When I was a teenager I thought I knew everything and criticized people's beliefs

Just sayin

You didn't prove me wrong at all. You simply quote someone and concluded that they are right and I got punked by it. Is everything that Newton said automatically true because he was intelligent? Of course not. He also lived during a completely different time. You can't compare at all. You've committed a logical fallacy.

And no, it isn't because you're religious that I think you shouldn't be a doctor. You just committed a huge logical fallacy and can't see it at all. And either way, my commentary was specific: I don't understand how a person can reconcile science and religion. Can they do this? Of course, we see it every day. I have already stated that. However, that doesn't mean I understand how they can do that because I see them as incompatible.

If you feel "belittled," that's on you.

The more you rant the more you dig yourself a hole, just get over the fact that you made an error and move on with your life.

You can think I'm wrong all you want, but I know I'm right. At best, you can conclude with what you posted is that a scientist can believe in religion, but that's an irrelevant point because I never argued that to be impossible. I argued that to be logically inconsistent.

Honestly, what good does your opinion on this do? It is not like tomorrow the world will wake up and there will be no more people that study science and still go to church every week. Your input is noted and honestly has overstayed its welcome. You go round and round about some opinion of yours and ok ok everyone understands that you don't like religion. Move on with your life. In the future, to avoid making yourself look bad, when religion is brought up, just walk away if it makes you uncomfortable. It will keep you from saying bogus things like you should be a televangelist blah blah blah. It is comments and mindsets like that that will keep you out of medical school or even being a successful doctor.

I don't understand how you have the nerve to troll on a post that was only meant to provide comfort in a way that you cannot comprehend. If it doesn't help you personally, what business do you have commenting on this thread? This is not the place to perpetuate a "religion vs. science" debate. Everyone is different but we are all here with one purpose and that is to help and be helped... you are doing neither so get off your high horse stop making immature and inappropriate comments.

Get off your high horse. You know you're right? You KNOW you're right? Who do you think you are? You're nothing more than a self-righteous "pre-med." Get over yourself. I hope you get banned for trolling. You have no business being here.

You troll me about being a pre-med, and you still tell me to get off my high horse. Ludicrous.

And yes, I know I'm right. You probably don't know what I'm saying that I'm right about because you haven't even bothered following the conversation. You are probably assuming I'm saying I'm right about something I haven't said or suggested: that you can't be religious and understand science.

Again, not suggesting that you can't go to church and study science. At this point I'm certain it is impossible to make you understand the difference between believing it is possible to go to church and study science and not comprehending how people can reconcile the two. As for your suggestions, I don't need them. It's not like I'm going to wake up tomorrow and think you're all correct and stuff.

End of discussion.

You should've gone into law. What a shame. Honestly, I could care less about following the conversation because it's completely off topic and you just keep perpetuating the debate. By the way, congrats on ruining this thread. It should be closed anytime now. Hopefully you won't be as immature as you are here with your patients... assuming, of course, that you even make it to medical school (and graduate) (and have patients)... /end of discussion. You can have the last word, loser.

LOL again the irony about the high horse and then trying to put someone down for being a pre-med.

You probably feel so rad and strong because you said "you can have the last word." Hahaha. Sadly, you're so transparent. Knowing you, your first reaction to this will be "pfft. I'm not gonna reply because I'm above that." Epic fail for you.

Guess you were wrong. Actually, I don't feel that way nor do I want to. I'm actually the nicest person around. I don't think I'm better than anyone at all. I just stick up for what I believe and I strongly think that you should respect what others believe even if you can't understand why they believe what they do. This is all ending the way it is because you added your 2 cents to a thread that was merely intended to comfort someone during a stressful time. It was inappropriate to post your opinion although I respect what you think. That's all I have to say about that.

Put you down? That is just a fact. I'm pre-med myself. I like how you say "knowing you," like you know me really well. Good call.
