Most threads that I've found on this are pretty old. I live in MA, so I'm probably driving down. But I know next to nothing about New York. I'd drive into Boston in a heart beat, but I'm heading into uncharted territory in the Big Apple. Should I drive my car into the city and park in some garage near the hotel I'm staying at? Should I stay in some hotel on the outskirts and take the train in?

Also, for those of you that booked a hotel, where are you staying? I'm looking for a place I can stay for cheap.

I would absolutely not drive to NYC. Well at least park there. I'm from long island so you can just take a train into Penn station the day of interview (that's what I did). Try to get a hotel/motel somewhere in long island and you'll probably pay $80-120ish depending on how fancy you want to get. The day of the interview take the Long Island Rail Road ($10ish) into Penn station and then from Penn station you take a cab to NYU ($8). I would try to get a hotel near a train station so you can just walk there in the morning. If you were to drive to NYC and park there you're going to be paying A LOTTTTT and the traffic will probably suck --which means you will have to leave you're home very very early to make sure you're not there late. When I had mine They started interviewing as soon as I got there. The schedule said Interviews would start at 8am and I got there at 7:30 and was interviewed at 7:40am (there were about 6 applicants interviewed before me.)

ps. I'm sure you could do the same by staying in CT or somewhere like that where the train ride will be ~1hr to Penn station.

Wow, I guess I am getting there at 6am then. Who interviewed you, if you don't mind sharing.

When is your interview? Mine is this Wednesday. I'm going to try to be there at 715

Good to know about getting there early. Any other recommendations from people on the best way to get there? The tips and tricks are appreciated, especially from anyone who knows the area!

(thanks Colombian)

hotel in brooklyn! i live there and on the day of my interview i took 1 train, 3 stops. it took me all of 15 min. and because your not in manhattan im sure hotel prices will be wayy more reasonable

Can any NY residents tell me how I should get to NYU from Midtown?

LOL. Yeah definitely get there early (idk about 6 am but ~730am is reasonable) I forgot who interviewed me it was an admissions staff. They're all very nice. Dress nice and don't be too nervous. I was pretty confident when I arrived but when people started to get called in I got really nervous (which I think is normal). I started reading some stuff they give you and it really calmed me down a bit. Once you go into the actual interview office you will be nervous at first but after the first question or so it will be more like a conversation and not an interview (this is how it was for me). Good luck guys

yeah? that seems to be the consensus. It will be a very important conversation for all of us.

Haha that's funny! My birthday is this Saturday but I'll be too nervous to enjoy it probably! Good luck 🙂

If you are coming from Midtown Eastside, take the green line south to 23rd street. I'm not sure if the express subways will stop at 23rd street. So just in case, go on the subway that stops at every stop. It's cheap $2.25/ride.

Wow, my friend told me it was 30 minutes away, so I got worried. But google says it's only 2-3 miles away 👍

Thanks guys!

You mean the 6, right? I never pay attention to the colors haha. The express doesn't stop at 23rd so take a local and then you just have to walk over a couple of avenues to first. If you walk on 24th, once you go past second ave you'll see that the street is cut off from cars going completely through for some reason, but you can just walk through and over the sidewalk in the middle of the street and the dental school is on the left at the end.

If you're on the west side, I would just take a taxi because you would have to transfer to get on the 6 ( the nearest subway to the school). If you take a taxi you might want to tell them to swing around to first ave since 24th is blocked off a little from first.

I will be coming from E 58th Street, which I believe is in Midtown East. It looks like it's only a few miles away, so I am thinking about walking instead of dealing with public transportation unless you guys would recommend against it.

58th to 24th is a long walk. It's still really hot in the city so I wouldn't want to be sweaty before the interview, but it's up to you. Just make sure you allow enough time for walking if you decide to do that.

Oh nooo, don't walk. Sal is right about the heat. I came from 54th E street. I suggest that you walk a few block to the closest subway on the corner of 59th and Lexington. Look for the subway entrance for "Downtown" not "Uptown." Take the 6 Green Line. Make sure the subway has a circle around the number 6. If you take the subway with a diamond around the 6, this is the express line. That route might not stop at 23rd street. So make sure you go on the one with the circle!!!! It will take you about 8 minutes to get off at 23rd street. Also, the subway has an electronic map that tells you how many stops you are from the one you want to get off. Subway is the way to go!! After you get off 23rd street, walk up one block and I think it's 2-3 blocks down! Good luck! To get home, make sure you take the subway that says "Uptown" and that it's the 6-green line!

Taxi, whatever the cost of the cab fare, it will probably cost less than the interest per month on the credit card I used to pay for the application fees this cycle, per month.
