Still doesn't make sense. The interviews are pretty much based off your gpa/mcat....what they'll do is take your gpa and multiply it by your mcat score to calculate a composite score.

Original post

After they interview...and what I stated wasn't an idea. Like I said, it is what one dean at one school explained to me. What, did you think I just made it up out of the blue? You say I have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about, but I would argue that you have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about. I'm not even sure that you're correctly reading what I'm writing....I'm talking about interview offers, not acceptance offers.

The confidence you imply in your original extrapolation amazes me considering n=1 in your survey. Do you think it's good practice to make such a judgment on a sample size of one?

Regardless, your claim is ridiculous enough that I feel it's unnecessary to actually provide counter-evidence in refutation. If doubt still remains to the legitimacy of icalz's theory, a thirty second comparison of interview invites offered to random profiles on mdapplicants.com should be sufficient for its outright rejection.

SDN is certainly full of characters 🙄 Making comments about how they aren't going to make any comments......

I would just like to take the time out of my day to write a response saying how this post does not deserve a response.

If you're determined to make yourself look like a bigger idiot, I'll be more than happy to help you.

Using your originally stated theory, please explain how the first applicant below was offered an interview to Mayo while the second was not:

Well if I have to hold your hand and walk you through it, then I'll do it just this once...

(1) Never completed a 2ndary
(2) Withdrew app
(3) Took multiple mcats which were averaged out.
(4) pure speculation here, but perhaps one checked the URM box.....?

Look, I'm very bored of you....you can respond back if you'd like but I'm letting you know in advance that I won't be revisiting this particular thread because I find you very annoying....(although I have the feeling that you'll still post some type of response....weird).

For future reference, if you want to disagree with someone then that's fine but let me show you how to do it: "I disagree with you, here's why..." I have respect for intelligent debate, but it's just not happening here. Take my advice to heart instead of attacking and you'll be a little less annoying.

theres somethin up with that second guy. 3.9 and 36 w/ no acceptances? doesn't seem plausible.

Ok, I'll bite. I'm strictly a lurker on here, but the application process has gotten me down and I'll share.

I'm a slightly non-traditional applicant. Originally got a 3.0gpa B.A. in the humanities with zero premed classes and absolutely zero thought of a career in medicine. Spent a couple years doing interesting international work and travel. Decided to pursue med schools and returned to school for two years of full time science classes.

Post bach science gpa: 3.70

cumulative gpa: 3.32 (clearly I want schools to focus on my post bach)

32R, only took the MCAT once

very good letters

400+ hospital volunteer hours
60 shadowing hours
60+ hours tutoring elementary kids

part time research job during my return to classes
current full time research job

newly started hospice volunteer position

I completed secondaries to 11 schools from early august to early september. All of them had average matriculation stats that my 3.7 and 32R fit nicely in.

2 rejections
a few holds
zero interview invites
:d

Thanks for the forum to vent in, I'll probably go back to lurking now.😎

verified mid july
gpa- 3.9
mcat- 33

I have a slightly lower MCAT and GPA and I've received 8 interviews out of 11 schools that I applied to (all MD schools). And my ECs are also the bare minimum. I have less than 100 hours of community service, no shadowing experience, and no sports/clubs/awards/honors. To put it bluntly, my application sucks. If I can get interviews and you can't then there's something weird going on. Did you apply to really tough to get into schools or something?

Don't loose hope with your low mcat and/or gpa!! I got interviews with much lower stats and so will you! Patience! 👍

Agreed. There is still plenty of time for interviews. Some people interview early and some later, it's dependent on so many different things. Just keep your chin up and keep in mind that SOOOO many people interview through the end of February-March and still get placements in med school. Best of luck.

Really, that makes me feel like ****. I applied very broadly. When did you submit most of your secondaries? Mine were from mid-august to early september.

There must be some reason. I had all of my secondaries completed by the second week of August. Most of them were in by the end of July. It was maybe 1 or 2 that came later.

Honestly I haven't a clue why you wouldn't have any interviews.Did you use the spreadsheet to apply?

I don't know what spreadsheet you are talking about. I used MSAR. I applied to around 20 schools.

I just got my first interview a couple days ago, but I just had to say this: You guys need to consider which schools everyone applied to. I'm seeing people on here that have better stats than me and not getting interviews.

True, ECs might come into play, but the important question is how high did you set your standards? I know my stats aren't that great, but I'm playing to my weaknesses by applying to schools that have lower average MCAT and GPA scores.

Are you guys applying to the more difficult schools? If so, then broaden the schools you apply to next year. Here are my stats:

completed application: Oct 1 (last possible day)
cGPA: 3.59
MCAT: 29

You can tell from that that I am pretty average and a slacker haha.

Don't let softmed get to you. I hate to call him/her out, but their sucky application, despite some interviews, hasn't landed acceptances yet...and that's all that matters. Check out softmed's own words. Moral of the story: it's not about the number of interviews you get, just about the one acceptance. You can get 25 interviews, but if you wind up with 25 WLs (or 25 rejections :scared: ) what good does that do you?

While I won't say it's "still early in the game," I will say that there's a significant amount of time left to still get some interview invites. Send out Update Letters/Letters of Interest with grades, activities, honors, etc from this semester and say some prayers.

It's so incredibly frustrating that many of us seem to have better stats than others we know or have heard of that have gotten interviews and even acceptances. I'm a reapplicant with a 3.85 cum and science GPA and a 36R MCAT. First time around 3.68 GPA 31P MCAT. My ECs don't suck either. I have nearly 6 years research experience. My most recent work is in cancer biology, and I'm published. Also worked as a med technologist for 2.5 years and pharm tech for like 5 years (while in school). I admit to few volunteer hours and only 60 or so hours of physician shadowing but come on! What the hell! So many qualified individuals are just not getting the break they need.
