Please bear with my ignorance here.

Is it impossible for a foreign trained dentist to enroll in a 4 year DDS program? I ask this question because instead of competing with a handful of seats why not write DAT and eroll in a 4 year program

Thanks

yes u can...once u take the DAT your ALMOST like a regular applicant....but some schools ask u to do some extra credits or some sort of pre-requirements if u have'nt done any coursework in the US/canada.the application system its completely differnt from the international program. you apply thru AADSAS (www.adea.org)
you can call up the schools in ur state or where you wish to join for further details or look up in the website for requirments for dds/dmd.
some schools are reallly not worth it as they ask you to do a 4 yr college and then take the DAT ...and the worst part of it all...they still want you to take the toefl..even after 4 yrs of college in the US....
it all depends on the state...some states ask u to take up few subjects ...some want a 4 yr college...call up and most of them will be willing to answer all ur questions...thts the best part here.
goodluck with ur decision

From what I researched, they have totally eliminated the possibility of foreign trained dentists from enrolling in a 4 year DDS/DMD program as they require each applicant to have atleast 90 semester hours of course work which is like 3 years of undergrad education. Advanced Standing is the only option and that is what a few hundred students and of those most colleges require US citizens or permanent residents.

Hi,

I am posting below an extract from the frequently asked questions section of University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine..if this may be of some help to you....

I am a graduate of a foreign dental program. How can I obtain a degree from your school?

UNLV does not have a specific program for foreign-trained dentists. Our program will require starting from the beginning and completing the four-year training. The application procedure is the same for all prospective students—applying through AADSAS, submitting DAT scores, letters of evaluation, etc. If National Boards have been taken, it may be used in lieu of the DAT but will
be determined on an individual basis. There are programs for foreign-trained dentists where a two-year clinical training results in a DDS or DMD degree. The programs nearest to Nevada are in California at Loma Linda University or University of Southern California.

I looked up their website for prereqs

http://dentalschool.unlv.edu/admissions_prereqs.html

Below is a snippet from the above link, which is consistent with prereqs for the rest of the dental programs in the US

Course Prerequisites:

1 year of General Biology with lab
1 year of General Chemistry with lab
1 year of Organic Chemistry with lab
1 year of General Physics with lab
1 semester of Biochemistry
1 year of English

A minimum of the following units are needed upon application:

90 semester units, or the equivalent completed or in progress at an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada. (30 of the 90 semester units must be completed at a four-year institution).

Additional suggested preparation courses/skills include:

Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Immunology/Genetics, Histology/Microanatomy, Public Speaking, Art, Sculpture, and Business. Computer skills are highly desirable

BOTTOMLINE: Advanced Standing is the only option for foreign trained dentists, 4 year DDS program in not an option
