Forming larger regional entities

Have any of you gone into "alliances" to join forces with other larger groups, or multiple smaller groups, in forming a larger, regional, independent group?

This is a strategy to 1) protect against the predators (Northstar etc) and 2) maintain independence, and 3) negotiate better statewide insurance reimbursements via economies of scale.

Anyone with experience in this or having played a part in this sort of thing???

Yes. Both groups I've been a partner in have entertained this. In the end, the egos of the people running the groups got in the way of making it work. Neither wanted to give up control/power. I think with the right mix of people with good intentions, it would work well.
