Hi. I am an MS1 enrolled in the AF HPSP. Afit sent out the 2013 HPERB list so I took a gander at the available residency slots in FP for 2013 and saw that there are 44 .mil slots and 65 def/redef slots. My problem is I have no baseline to compare this to.

For any of you vets, how do these numbers compare to other years? Do those 65 def/redef slots mean civilian deferments?

Also is it true that you are more likely to go straight through in a field like FP? I realize nobody is safe from GMO or FS billets but I have read that some years there will be less applicants than slots in a field so everyone in that field will match up. Apologies ahead of time for any ignorance I am showing. Thank you!

Technically 50 spots, 6 are combo flight med and FM but revert back tk FM spots if those 6 spots don't fill

The AD training spots have been consistent, the 65 civ def spots is a lot more than the last 2 years

The last 2 years there have been more applicants than AD training spots not sure if anyone was sent to a gmo or fs surgeon tour though.

No problem

What if you have absolutely zero desire to do a civilian deferment? Can they force you to do a civilian deferment?

I was under the impression that civilian deferments were more the exception rather than the rule and somewhat rare. Has this changed?

Also, is this across all the branches or only an Air Force situation?

And last, is this the same for all specialties, or only family practice?

Thanks!

So if they don't fill them all does that mean nobody gets forced into GMO/FS billets or is it a case by case kind of thing?
I would guess all HPSP applicants would get selected to train in FM, this is just my guess though. Also, these civ def numbers change each year so the needs of the serbice might be different when you apply.

i believe they can only make you do pgy1, after that you can do gmo, reapply, etc
I was under the impression that civilian deferments were more the exception rather than the rule and somewhat rare. Has this changed? i think this is unique as the AF has had more applicants that training spots in FM for the last couple years. Last year Army didnt have enough applicants to fill spots so AF ended up taking an Army spot at one of the joint programs.

No clue on how it is in other branches, I think its more common in the AF in certain specialties because we don't have a lot of AD training spots to fill the needs of the service

I think it's more of an AF thing. The Army is extremely unlikely to grant civilian deferments unless things have changed drastically in the last few years. When I was applying for residency, the Army told us not even to both asking for a deferment because it wouldn't be granted. They were going to be short enough on interns that anyone who didn't match would just be shoveled into a TY slot.

No. If you don't want to do CivDef then don't rank it. You'd rank the AD locations, then on your secondary sheet you'd rank the intern training locations.

In the Army, yes, they're rare. In the AF they happen more commonly.

Most specialties will have some number of civilian deferral spots, but you'd have to look at the list to see how many there are.
