Hi there,

I am planing to take this free genetics course online in preparation for the MCAT. Has anyone heard or taken a free class on Coursera? If so, what is your feedback? I just can't believe it's a free course. Granted, I can't put it on my transcripts, but it will help me with the MCAT (I hope).

Best,

Amber

The MCAT will only test you on material that can be taught in a 12-week introductory course on Biology, aka the pre-req most schools have, since genetics is not an intro bio course how much it will help you is dubious, in fact it might hurt you by opening your mind to more complex thought processes than the mcat actually requires.

In the amount of time you spend on that genetics course you can probably watch Khan Academy 3 times over and that, danceamber, will actually be relevant

I disagree with Welshman. At least in my experience, genetics really helped me understand some concepts at a deeper level, which is definitely helpful for the MCAT. General Bio covers a lot in little time, and taking higher level Bio courses helps a ton in gaining more understanding of those concepts and how they relate. Genetics is not crazy deep that it would surpass the knowledge needed for the MCAT; in fact, most of what I learned in genetics proved relevant for the MCAT: punett squares, mendelian laws, replication and transcription, etc.
